Polls: NRA has higher favorable rating than Obama
By: Byron York
A new Gallup poll shows that the National Rifle Association, the target of a wave of intensely negative news coverage after the Newtown, Connecticut school shootings, still has a favorable rating of 54 percent. While down from the organization’s 60 percent favorable rating in 2005, that is still about a point higher than President Obama’s personal favorable rating.
A Huffington Post average of the president’s favorable ratings places it at 52.3 percent. That average includes favorable ratings of 49 percent in a December 16 CBS News poll, 53 percent in a December 9 Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, and 56 percent in a November 18 CNN poll.

These are 2 different polls neither of which is pitting the 2 entities against each other.
Aren't polls only meaningful when the numbers equal 100%?
Maybe it's just too early in the morning, but I don't understand how this is a relevant comparison.

I'd think if I could just restyle the world to fit my conceptions I'd restyle it to be very nice. Yet these people who do seem to end up really unhappy with most everything.
I shall continue. Here's my analogy to the poll. - amimissingsomething

100 high schoolers in High School Apple were asked what their favorite food was. 54% said pizza
100 high schoolers in High School Orange were asked what their favorite sport was. 52% said football.
Therefore, pizza is more popular than football.
Of course a liberal would - discount the poll

unless the shoe were on the other foot. Classic rationalization.
I'm not discounting it at all. - amimissingsomething

You missed my point (not criticizing).
I was just trying to say that I don't understand how it makes sense to compare 2 different polls from 2 different sources that aren't really related to each other and have no stated connection in the poll question.
Polls are polls. There's no discounting them unless you just don't believe in polls. I definitely don't deny that each poll itself is correct and valid in the results.
I just don't get the point of comparing the 2 polls and coming up with a relevant conclusion.
Discount, you may also have missed the point of the quote. - Thinking, an admirable exercise. :) nm

a slight swipe since my point was not really pro either party, just that I didn't think the conclusion was relevant. "Classic rationalization" was directed at me, not the point I was trying to make. A discussion would have been nice... But I guess the point just went over his/her head. I won't say what that is classic of.
a couple things - sm

1) "...of course a liberal would..." is passive/aggressive: it telegraphs a message without having the courage to come out and say what the message is.
2) I never said I was "so offended". I merely called attention to a popular, prevailing modus operandi.
Poll was taken Dec 19-22. LaPierre's new conference was - Dec 21, so

it's doubtful those numbers will look the same in the next poll they do, that will more accurately reflect the damage LaPierre did to NRA credibility in his "no questions, please" so-called news conference.
Gallup also found that 58% favor stricter gun control laws. Of those, 46% favor enhanced enforcement of existing laws while 47% favor enforcement of existing AND new, tougher measures. 92% support background checks for buyers at gun shows, and 62% favor bans on high-capacity magazines.
NRA fans would be ill-advised to take too much comfort in these results. All they really reflect is how the NRA lobby's arm-'em-to-the-teeth narrative has taken root during recent years while dem gun control advocates twiddled their thumbs. That was before Sandy Hook. I seriously doubt they will be wimping out over this issue anytime soon.
When the NRA is president of the US - that poll will be relevant.
