Oops! A lot of us were

But these guys should have been on top of it. "The Obama administration's Asia team was caught so off guard by North Korea's Dec. 11 rocket launch, several of them actually had to put down their drinks and suddenly leave a holiday party being held in honor of the Japanese emperor's birthday." They had to leave a diplomatic affair for a conference room. Well, that's just us? - We're the Keystone Cops of world leadership?

Given the entire North Korea missile issue, this skew is probably not what is most worth noting. That our North Korea people don't spend all hours glued to their desks awaiting information from the intelligence branches.

You know, Keystoney as North Korea's program has been, they finally managed to achieve an intercontinental ballistic missile launch that "appeared to achieve orbit" and had successful separation of the stages. Apparently being able to shoot it up isn't quite enough, though. They still have to be able to arm it and then bring it back down where they want it. Now, where that might be is of interest. Or is actually completing it and using it even their real goal?

Who IS Kim Jong Un? "NKorea Rocket Launch Shows - Young Leader As Gambler" sm

Googling him turns up amazingly little information. He studied in Switzerland, reportedly is interested in science, focused on artillery in military college, and may well be even younger than his stated age of 30.

NK denies the missle was an ICBM and claims it launched a satellite designed to send back data about crops and weather.

"Aside from winning him support from the people, the success of the launch helps his image as he works to consolidate power over a government crammed with elderly, old-school lieutenants of his father and grandfather, foreign analysts said.

Experts say that what is unclear, however, is whether Kim will continue to smoothly solidify power, steering clear of friction with the powerful military while dealing with the strong possibility of more crushing sanctions against a country with what the United Nations calls a serious hunger problem.

"Certainly in the short run, this is an enormous boost to his prestige," according to Marcus Noland, a North Korea analyst at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington.

Noland, however, also mentioned the "Machiavellian argument" that this could cause future problems for Kim by significantly boosting the power of the military — "the only real threat to his rule."

Despite the success, experts say North Korea is years from even having a shot at developing reliable missiles that could bombard the American mainland and other distant targets."

The whole article, which is interesting but, again, offers very little insight into who or what this kid is, below.

Skew is too kind of a word here. Other reports on this issue - seem to reflect a broader scope

wherein North Korea's regional neighbors, namely Japan, South Korea (who promptly burned a rocket in effigy in response to the launch), the Philippines and behemoth China, along with the rest of the world, were also caught "off guard" by North Korea's campaign of misinformation. Nuclear disarmament is the purview of the entire globe, not just the parochial interest of any one nation's diplomacy. Evidently, this grounding principle completely escaped alleged foreign-policy expert Josh Rogin, whose focus honed in on what folks did with their drinks at a holiday birthday celebration for the emperor.
