Cleavage And Crossed Legs

by digby

I heard about the ridiculous knock on Elena Kagan for failing to act like a "proper lady" and cross her legs and decided not to even comment it was so stupid. But I missed the second act of this absurd play for some reason and it's a doozy. Here's Amanda Marcotte:

Going in front of the cameras while in Washington, D.C., while having lady parts is seeming incredibly fraught these days. As has been thoroughly discussed here, whether a woman crosses her legs when she sits down seems to have become a major issue overnight. Now you have Matt Drudge and Glenn Beck getting the vapors because Michelle Obama had a modest amount of cleavage showing in an evening dress. If the trend continues in this direction, within a few years, there will be a national scandal when one of the first daughters dares to show a bit of ankle.

Beck said the dress was inappropriate, among other things, including this:

" Did you see the picture of his wife yesterday, all dolled up? 'Sex in the City' is what it said on the Drudge Report. She looks positively like she's trying to be some Greek statue. I don't think I've ever seen the first lady with her -- excuse the expression -- but with her breasts all smooshed up, sort of. I mean, what is that?"

If Michelle Obama's cleavage made Glenn feel all funny down there, wait until he gets a load of Dolley Madison:

And here's the slutty Mary Todd Lincoln:

While we're at it, how about the very inappropriate Virgin Queen:

The gasbags often get riled up about the bubbies. (Recall John Harwood insisting that the 60 year old Hillary Clinton was showing a quarter inch of cleavage in the middle of August in DC as part of her presidential campaign strategy.)

In case you missed the offending garment, here's what got Drudge and Beck all worked up:

I know. It's a shocking display of raw sexuality which has no place in our politics.

Amanda has written more about the underlying sexual politics here, if you are confused about why this stuff happens.

Update: Speaking of cleavage controversies, here's a truly bizarre story about Amy Klobuchar being told to "pull up her shirt" while she was presiding over the Senate. WTH? Are these people 12?

Michelle's breasts quite ridiculous. However, in looking at her picture...that dress looks really uncomfortable. It looks like it is cutting into one of her armpits. Ouch!
My position on boobage...if you've got 'em, be proud. As long as the cleavage isn't so much that a nipple could pop out any time....who cares! I mean really.

I didn't see anything wrong with the dress. I didn't particularly care for it but I didn't think it was inappropriate at all. I didn't like her hair - and that's the first time I didn't like the way she looks. With her height, body build and beautiful skin, the woman can wear just about anything. I think people who criticize her are ridiculous.

If the blue dress that is shown is what the comments are being made about, I think that she looks very pretty in it and I do not see anything at all wrong with it. Idiots will always find something to complain about, without a doubt. Instead of making such an issue about this, if they want to focus on "inappropriateness," why don't they discuss all of the government workers that have recently been discovered watching porn on government (taxpayer provided) computers .... I mean really, how much more inappropriate can that be?!!???!???

I'm in no way a fan of hers - anon

I simply do not like them because of their philosphies and political ideations. It makes me ill now a days just to look at them, as does Hillary and Bill and the Gore's, Pelosi and other politicians. Just makes me nauseous.

However...with that said I think she looks absolutely stunning. Love her hair and she has a beautiful smile and her skin is impeccable. I think she's a very stunning person. Although as one poster said the dress does look uncomfortable like it's cutting into her arm pit. But it's a beautiful color and makes her look radiant.

It's the person on the inside and what they do that I do not like or approve of.

Glenn Beck and all the others have to find something. They are like school bullies. Always got to pick on them for something. I'm a big Glenn Beck fan, but only because of the issues he talks about. He's a mormon and his ideas of how everyone should live is way off my chart. Just don't agree with him in his personal life. I don't know if he said this about Michelle before or after he came out and told everyone nobody should go after the families of a politicians. If it was after I'm sure his wife will be having another "talk" with him. LOL I don't care much for a couple of the people on Fox (O'Reilly in particular) because it's like watching the "Puritan channel". ha ha. Maybe they should stick to issues and lay off the personal attacks.

Anyway...I don't like her or the current crowd as people, but I will say she is absolutely beautiful here and the dress (from what I can see) is a beautiful dress (just missing a sleeve) HA HA.

Michelle is... sm - Kate

an attractive woman, young and in pretty good shape. She always looks nice and dresses appropriately. They even had to make a big deal about her wearing shorts to the Grand Canyon...Good grief...It was probably hot. I didn't see her breasts hanging out of the dress. Just ridiculous!! I, personally, hope she'll be a one-term first lady but the Obama's are a nice looking couple and have a beautiful family regardless of how I feel about the way the prez is doing his job.

Now American Idiots Are Getting In On The ThreatsSep 14, 2012
As usual, some so-called Americans think they're being funny calling in bomb threats to campuses and buildings. If and when they're caught, I hope they get the book thrown at them. No sensible reason for it. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Thousands of people streamed off university campuses in Texas and North Dakota on Friday after phoned-in bomb threats prompted evacuations and officials warned students and faculty to get away as quickly as possible. No bombs were found on either campus ...
