They have voted to officially become a state in the US, but it has to be approved by Congress.

Love that idea...sm - JTBB

More resources, more tax dollars, more opportunities for them and us. Could be a great "tourist" state.

Me too. Another culture to embrace that will - enrich in return. nm

They already pay taxes to the U.S. They have to file with the IRS every year - backwards typist

just like us. They vote in our elections, too.

The only thing different between PR and the U.S. is they're not a state. Their citizens have been fighting for years - some wanted to be included as a state - some didn't, and usually the some didn't won.

It didn't make any sense to me that some didn't want to be recognized as a state since they came under all U.S. regulations and laws.

More people to get more free stuff. Dems will love that. - No prob.

You obviously have been listening to Bill O'Reilly - fencingmother

That is the exact schtick he was doing. Sad thing is, I suspect you both know that is not true, and at the very least is a VAST oversimplification.

You suspect wrong. DH is watching a gangsta movie (sm) - me

and I haven't had TV on most of the day, plus I've been working. I occasionally do manage to have a thought all on my own. This is how Obama won the Hispanics by promising them free stuff, so this was a logical conclusion. It's not rocket science.
Boing-Boing. No one said you were listening to Bill-O - in realtime. Who told you
[ In Reply To ..]
Obama promised Hispanics free stuff, leading you to the false premise that that's why he won their vote? Where did that info come from? It's certainly not a spontaneous creative concept produced by your cognitive functions, since those same sentiments are plastered all over lunatic fringe blogs from here to kingdom-come.
So, in other words, you are trying to tell me (sm) - me
[ In Reply To ..]
that Obama did not go to Mexico and tell them how to apply for food stamps when they get here? Careful. I have proof. Oh, wait, are Mexicans not Hispanic?
C'mon, now you're just punking us. - (nm)

this thread was about Puerto Rico, which is very far from Mexico. We are actually US citizens and we pay federal income taxes.
you're right - sm

it appears that the poster we are responding to has some geographical challenges compounding her anti-Hispanic agenda.
How insulting. - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
All Hispanics want free stuff? You can lump them all in one general heap and presume that they all think alike, that they're all freeloaders? Pathetic.
You are so right, that is insulting - me
[ In Reply To ..]
For your information, most Hispanics who come to the US come here to WORK, not freeload. My husband had a construction company in Florida and he hired many Mexican workers who all had legal work permits. They were all here to make a decent living and provide for their families, and believe me they were hard workers. They were not afraid to get down and dirty and get a job done. And the reason they got hired is because there were too many lazy WHITES who felt they were too high and mighty to do the work. None of them were here to freeload from the government, all they wanted to do was make a decent living and support their families. So don't generalize when you speak about the Hispanics, because most of them are hard workers and actually the majority were nicer and more polite to boot! If you actually took a look at how many white people are on government handouts, you might not be so quick to judge.
Slow learning curve apparently. Keep it up, hatemongers, and you'll never win another - big election. OR get dumped by your party.nm

“It’s not a traditional America anymore, and there are 50 percent of the voting public who want stuff. They want things. And who is going to give them things? President Obama.”

If this is the way their viewers are going to process structural demographic population shifts that have now created significant political coalitions that are driving election results, the dems should have no problem prevailing in 2016 and beyond.
My thoughts exactly--the video cameras are rolling - No more lip service
[ In Reply To ..]
It is going to be a very painful process the the Pubs finally genuinely embrace minorities and women as equals. Until then the liberals and Democrats will prevail in all the upcoming elections. I should emphasize genuine and not just the lip service.
The GOP leadership will invite the "BASE" to fall - in line or leave. It'll take the form
[ In Reply To ..]
of telling them in local meetings, e-mails, etc., that it's time to be nice via high-flown verbage about how great they are, but those who can't swallow their bile enough to pretend will be pushed aside.

Most of the base, as befits authoritarian followers, will end up doing as their leaders instruct, and of course become even more convinced of their righteousness in the process. Viciousness will not disappear entirely and will be slightly harder to detect, hidden more carefully behind sanctimonious morality.

Nevertheless, whether they realize it or not yet, what this election has cost the reactionary Republican base is their outsized power to impose their negativism and bigotry on everyone else. To have any real influence, they will have to sing a song of someone else's choosing from here on in.

So, that's a big, good job done right there. Congrats to the American people. :)
You (or some other lib/dems on this board) always say - backwards typist

not to 'lump all libs/dems' together; that there are plenty that don't think that way.

Why not give the pubs/conservatives the same thinking? I don't think you can, can you and I think I know why. You think you're the judge and jury of all. Lighten up sometimes. You may make some friends on this board.

Have a nice day.

Yup, no problem until the rest of us can't afford to - pay for it anymore. (nm)
