First Lady Requires More Than Twenty Attendants

Dr. Paul L. Williams

"In my own life, in my own small way, I have tried to give back to this country that has given me so much," she said. "See, that's why I left a job at a big law firm for a career in public service, " Michelle Obama

No, Michele Obama does not get paid to serve as the First Lady and she doesn't perform any official duties. But this hasn't deterred her from hiring an unprecedented number of staffers to cater to her every whim and to satisfy her every request in the midst of the Great Recession. Just think Mary Lincoln was taken to task for purchasing china for the White House during the Civil War. And Mamie Eisenhower had to shell out the salary for her personal secretary.

How things have changed! If you're one of the tens of millions of Americans facing certain destitution, earning less than subsistence wages stocking the shelves at Wal-Mart or serving up McDonald cheeseburgers, prepare to scream and then come to realize that the benefit package for these servants of Miz Michelle are the same as members of the national security and defense departments and the bill for these assorted lackeys is paid by John Q. Public:

1. $172,2000 - Sher, Susan (Chief Of Staff)
2. $140,000 - Frye, Jocelyn C. (Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Policy And Projects For The First Lady)
3. $113,000 - Rogers, Desiree G. (Special Assistant to the President and White House Social Secretary)
4. $102,000 - Johnston, Camille Y. (Special Assistant to the President and Director of Communications for the First Lady)
5. $100,000 - Winter, Melissa E. (Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief Of Staff to the First Lady)
6. $90,000 -  Medina , David S. (Deputy Chief Of Staff to the First Lady)
7. $84,000 - Lelyveld, Catherine M. (Director and Press Secretary to the First Lady)
8. $75,000 - Starkey, Frances M. (Director of Scheduling and Advance for the First Lady)
9. $70,000 - Sanders, Trooper (Deputy Director of Policy and Projects for the First Lady)
10. $65,000 - Burnough, Erinn J. (Deputy Director and Deputy Social Secretary)
11. $64,000 - Reinstein, Joseph B. (Deputy Director and Deputy Social Secretary)
12. $62,000 - Goodman, Jennifer R. (Deputy Director of Scheduling and Events Coordinator For The First Lady)
13. $60,000 - Fitts, Alan O. (Deputy Director of Advance and Trip Director for the First Lady)
14. $57,500 - Lewis, Dana M. (Special Assistant and Personal Aide to the First Lady)
15. $52,500 - Mustaphi, Semonti M. (Associate Director and Deputy Press Secretary To The First Lady)
16. $50,000 - Jarvis, Kristen E. (Special Assistant for Scheduling and Traveling Aide To The First Lady)
17. $45,000 - Lechtenberg, Tyler A. (Associate Director of Correspondence For The First Lady)
18. $43,000 - Tubman, Samantha (Deputy Associate Director, Social Office)
19. $40,000 - Boswell, Joseph J. (Executive Assistant to the Chief Of Staff to the First Lady)
20. $36,000 - Armbruster, Sally M. (Staff Assistant to the Social Secretary)
21. $35,000 - Bookey, Natalie (Staff Assistant)
22. $35,000 - Jackson, Deilia A. (Deputy Associate Director of Correspondence for the First Lady)

There has NEVER been anyone in the White House at any time who has created such an army of staffers whose sole duties are the facilitation of the First Lady's social life. One wonders why she needs so much help, at taxpayer expense, when even Hillary, only had three; Jackie Kennedy one; Laura Bush one; and prior to Mamie Eisenhower social help came from the President's own pocket.

Note: This does not include makeup artist Ingrid Grimes-Miles, 49, and "First Hairstylist" Johnny Wright, 31, both of whom traveled aboard Air Force One to  Europe .

debunked? - cj

Didn't debunk much, did it? It is still outrageous. she has a staff earning 1.8 million bucks - SHE does?? And I truly don't care if anyone else had it. It was outrageous for them, too. The first lady has no official position other than that of wife of the president. We didn't elect her and we should not have to pay her staff 1.8 Million dollars.

Why start now? - NJ

My goodness, take 1.8mil and divide it by the # of staffers, which is not an unreasonable number historically. They aren't getting rich serving the White House.

You misunderstand the position of First Lady, who is expected to run the social aspect of the White House, entertaining foreign dignitaries, etc.

Plus, I hope you don't expect the president to leave all family behind when s/he enters office. If you do, why now all of a sudden?

Another nonissue.
why not now? - cj

This line comes right from your "debunking post."
"The combined annual salaries for the 22 staffers we can specifically identify as working for Michelle Obama come to $1.6 million." I'd say there are some pretty nice salaries there. Of course I do not expect a president to leave all family behind, but I do not accept that 1.8 million dollars of taxpayer money is needed for HER social secretaries and correspondence secretaries, her makeup artist and hair stylist. I really do not care what her position is, not one bit. We elect a president, not a first lady, and her WH social calendar is not a national priority, and especially not when unemployment is near 10% and the economy is half dead. As I said, it was not acceptable before and it not acceptable now. So when is the right time to reign it in? Do we just keep letting things be this ridiculous because they were that way before? We just keep saying "that's the way it has always been" or why not change it now? This is the administration of change, you know.

At 1.6mil for 22 people, the average salary is less than 100k. Nice for you or me perhaps, but not very extravagent.

The WH social calendar is not about her personal friends, for pete's sake. It's part of the job of the president to entertain and typically his wife manages it so he doesn't have to. Either way, the staff would still exist.

To complain about her hairdresser and makeup people after decades of First Ladies having staff like that seems petty. It's just bad timing on your part, I think.

Obama ran his campaign on CHANGE and TRANSPARENCY IN WASHINGTON.

I haven't seen either yet.

For one thing, he is just one person - he can't wave a magic wand and have 'WASHINGTON' turn transparent, he can only ADVOCATE for transparency, which he has done.

And if you have noted the CHANGES he has already effected, you are simply not paying attention.

This is just the OBAMA/family complaint du jour .

Tomorrow the complaint of the day could be that DESPITE having a sufficient, well-paid staff, Michelle dropped ball A...

Friday, it will be something else.

This group will nit pick the O family as long as they are in office - it has nothing to do with timing IMHO, the article just gave them fresh ammo.

You have to laugh in a way over people getting panties in a wad over this amount of money, considering how MUCH money was wasted every DAY, during Bush's reign, on the Iraq war.

I would say the same .... - cj

sort of thing only in reverse. You will accept, actually praise, whatever Obama does no matter what it is, right or wrong. You give him a free pass on anything and everything.
Unemployment? - ha!
[ In Reply To ..]
You complain about unemployment, but you want our first lady to fire her staffers? Did you know that the cost of living in D.O.Columbia is one of the highest in the nation, so maybe someone earning 30K in Alabama can buy a house and be middle class, but it may take twice that much in D.O.Columbia. Hell, my husband and I make 70,000 between the 2 of us and we barely scrape by the middle class category.

I think at this point complaining about unemployment and then turning around and suggesting the First Lady fire staffers is a bit silly.

Hey here's a thought... - me

Obama is donating the $1.4 MILLION DOLLARS JUST AWARDED to him for having the AUDACITY OF HOPE and a vision of a world without WMD.

Would you or anyone else like to complain about this? Or would you, gasp, actually commend him for donating the award to charity?

Sure, I will commend him.... - watcher

It is great that anyone gives to charity. Think I already mentioned that.

"A snapshot of some first ladies' staffs" - Nikki

First ladies are dogged by questions about why someone who isn't elected or paid, or who isn't routinely handling serious domestic and global issues, has a staff at all. But first ladies do more than just choose china patterns and plan White House social functions.

Staff sizes may rise and fall depending on what projects are under way, as well as the number of people who may be temporarily reassigned from a department or agency to assist. Also, some first lady aides don't just work for her; they report to the president, too.

A look at some first ladies and their staff sizes:

_Michelle Obama: 24, according to her office.

_Laura Bush: Between 24 and 26 by end of President George W. Bush's term in 2009, according to Anita McBride, Mrs. Bush's chief of staff.

_Hillary Rodham Clinton: 13 in October 1993, rising to 19 by March 2000, according to the Clinton Presidential Library.

_Lady Bird Johnson, whose signature issue was beautifying roadways, had a staff of 30, said Stacy A. Cordery, a history professor at Montmouth College in Illinois who studies first ladies.

_Betty Ford had almost the same number.

_Jacqueline Kennedy, who made renovating the White House her cause, had about 40 people on staff, Cordery said.
