GM fuel efficient car sales surge as

Posted: Apr 4, 2012

"an idea whose time has not come."  Meanwhile, Volt sales doubled between February and March form 1,023 to 2,289 (link 1).  Of GM's surging sales in March, 40% were fuel-efficient cars with greater than 30 MPG, with overall sales up 13 percent from the same month a year ago. Edmunds.com said this represents the most vehicles sold since August 2007. General Motors, Chrysler and Toyota all reported double-digit gains over last March. Nissan and Hyundai set company records (link 2), where the general consensus is that the recovery is fueling the increase in car sales and vice versa.

Wonder how Mittens will spin 25 months of jobs growth with another 200,000+ jobs added for March.

or is it confined to Limbaugh's and Fox's favorite whipping boy? Do you always consult them when evaluating your next vehicle purchase? Which one is their number 1 pick? No, wait. Don't tell me. The 8 cyl Chevy Express 3500 2WD Cargo van? The 10 cyl Ford E350 Wagon? The 8 cyl Chevy Suburban 2500 4WD? Any and all combined 11 MPG ESSO "happy motoring" gas-guzzling poster boys for the GOPs regressive back-the-the-future drill-baby-drill visions? No? I got it. How about anything but GM with an anybody-but-Obama bumper sticker? Now THAT'S the ticket!

I'm so sorry you find these GM/Volt success stories so disturbing.

Mittens needs to get his Talking Points straight. Fox has reversed course and - now loves the Volt

They will be calling him "President Mittens" next year. The nickname is used a lot on liberal sites. I read that the nickname started with Jim Newell (at Gawker) when he was at Wonkette.

new vehicle, it would be fuel efficient, just not a volt as I can't afford one. It also doesn't surprise me because of the cost of some of these smaller cars. I'm not one bit surprised that sales are going up on fuel efficient cars. Does Romney disagree with fuel efficient cars in general? I haven't heard that one.

I read something not long ago comparing the Volt to other fuel efficient vehicles such as the Focus, etc., and it seemed that overall these other vehicles were less expensive in the long run.

This reminds me of my mom and the microwave story - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
In the mid 1960s commercial microwave ovens cost around $100 ($725 dollars 2012 equivalent). My sisters and I tried to convince her to get one, but SHE remembered the earlier concept and first commercial "Radarange" models, which were 6 feet tall and weighed 750 pounds in the late 1940s and cost between $2000 and $3000, or roughly the 2012 equivalent to $18,893 to $28,340! To gain some perspective on just how cost prohibitive that was, you could buy a 3-bedroom 2-bath middle class suburban home for the latter amount in 1950.

She never, and I mean NEVER, got over her initial microwave oven sticker shock. When my sisters and I were in our 20s, had graduated and were working, we pooled our money together one year and bought her the latest model of microwave oven about ten years later. It sat dormant on a table in her home until she passed away in 1998. She never used it, not once!

I think Mitt's stance on the Volt was simply a blatent pander to that part of the GOP conservative base who joined the Fox Volt hate club. He put forth his Climate Protection Plan of 2004 which, like his health care plan, is curiously similar to Obama's agenda. Some key features call for more carpooling, stronger emissions standards and tax incentives for motorists who purchase fuel-efficient vehicles. Alas, since we have to wait until after the primary to see the unzipped version of the REAL Mitt Romney, what he would do on a national level is anybody's guess.

The Volt and its European counterpart (Opel Ampera) were voted European Car of the Year, where sales are more than 3 times that in the US since the car was NEVER POLITICIZED there. I agree with you about the cost of the Volt, but my guess is that it will come down to more reasonable levels sooner rather than later, in view of its recent recognition and spike in demand. I don't know much about the Ford Focus, but while researching the Volt, I noticed one of its models has phenomenal combined MPG numbers (over 100). Is it electric? What is the difference between its technology and that of the Volt that enables it to be that fuel efficient?

oil prices - goldie

Oops, I think someone forgot to tell Nancy Pelosi.

From July 17, 2008 (CNN Politics):  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Thursday blamed the "two oil men in the White House," President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, and their Republican allies in Congress for gas prices exceeding $4 a gallon.

Pelosi, a California Democrat, said multiple initiatives intended to lower high energy costs have passed the Democratically controlled House only to "run into a brick wall" in the Senate because they did not receive the 60 votes needed to overcome Republican filibusters.

"The price of oil is... is attributed to two oil men in the White House and their protectors in the United States Senate," Pelosi said in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

"This paranoid ploy the Dems have has concoceted as a campaign strategy is doomed to fail in the face of fundamental facts" that the approval of the pipeline would not affect gas prices.

Too bad posters did not Bush the same courtesy when gas briefly hit $4.00/gallon that they give Oblablah for CONSISTENT GAS PRICES OVER $4.00. Yep - that old double standard.

[ In Reply To ..]
the summer before the 2008 bottom dropped out in the fall of 2008. I never blamed GW as I know the president has no influence over the price of gas. Oil speculation is what is driving the price up.
We are far over $4.27/gallon in gas in my area - Prices dropped immediately
[ In Reply To ..]
When Bush announced he had issued an increase in drilling permits, opened up areas for further exploration and drilling. I am fully aware of what drives the price (OPEC primarily), but agree with OP that some on this board went after Bush like a pit bull after a steak, yet give Obama a complete pass on everything. I understand your post completely, but if you scan the old posts, you are probably the only one that did not want to set Bush on fire over gas prices. Trouble is, a lot of posters hate first, read much later, and think last...not a good combination for serious intellectual dialogue on any subject.

They haven't surged at my husband's - Trigger Happy

dealership. I think he has sold a couple...but they are a small dealership in a small town. Perhaps that is why they haven't sold a lot.

I like the volt. I think it is a neat car. I particularly like that it automatically unlocks when you get near the car just by having your key thing with you. The biggest problem with the volt, IMO, is that it just costs so much. Plus, I personally don't like smaller vehicles because it is hard with 2 kids in car seats. But that is just me.

It looks awesome and when your electric power runs out, it does have a gas engine and it transitions so quietly that you don't even notice it. I don't think the power charge lasts as long as it was initially planned to but when you add the radio, heated seats, heat or A/C...that is all electric and uses up that power.

I think we are making a step in the right direction. I just don't think we are there yet...and with the price...yeeks. That would be my biggest set back is the price.

It still doesn't change the fact that when you plug the volt in to charge, you are still using coal or fossil fuels to charge it...but again....a step in the right direction...we just need to spend more time on it..IMO.

Sorry...I misread the initial post - Trigger Happy

People are definitely buying small fuel efficient cars. The reason they aren't buying the volt is the price. People just cannot afford to extend themselves that far during hard times.

Article in New York Times yesterday - Ms Prius

[ In Reply To ..]
Fuel-efficient is one thing. They do well. All-electric are very expensive in comparison, have a limited radius before needing to recharge, require installation of charging ports, and other issues.

The article I read last night said sales were so low that GM was halting production of the Volt. I do think the idea needs more work.

My Prius is superb, but I could not manage with a Volt no matter what because I simply have nowhere to plug it in.

You make a good point - about recharge hub problems

[ In Reply To ..]
which would present a problem for residents in apartment communities, no garage or other space limitations. The charger itself is not that big, about the size of a medium size oscillating fan face. It requires 240 volt wiring which if I'm not mistaken is the same as a clothes dryer. It too has cost considerations: $500 for the charger and a whopping $1500 for installation, though some freebies and incentive offers are available.

I read the same thing in early March about halting production for 5 weeks to evaluate production versus demand ratios but with these March sales figures, GM has moved its production restart date up by one week. IMO, GM is exercising good business sense with its cautious approach to production and demand. I also like the fact that their workers are only temporarily laid off with SUB pay, where GM offers income supplements to unemployment benefits that restores up to 95 percent of the worker's typical pay.

The Volt's limited radius is addressed by its transition to conventional fuel use feature, though I think some other electric car models may have wider radii. Certainly the Prius hybrid's liquid fuel mileage is very attractive as is the overall Toyota reputation for low maintenance and reliability, and in terms of affordability, the Volt will probably remain out of reach for middle income buyers for at least a few years. Still, I am encouraged by GMs rapid restructuring and shift in priority emphasis from their beloved gas guzzlers to fuel efficient models and the success of its innovative technologies.
