DISGUSTING

Posted: Oct 1, 2016

So disappointed in our local university band, several band members taking a knee today during a ballgame (East Carolina University).  We need to forget political correctness.  The anthem stands for freedom, freedom which these university students, NFL players, etc., have today.  I just wanted to snatch them off the field.  Where are the adults at.  I hope the Chancellor of this university finally speaks out about this.  This was disgraceful.  The NFL should have nipped it in the bud when they had the chance.

;

I do not think you understand the meaning - of the knee

[ In Reply To ..]
The meaning of "taking the knee" is the betrayal of the supposed freedoms that are not being granted to minorities, including police brutality and an overriding discrimination against minorities in general.

This is somewhat akin to flying the flag upside down, showing that the U.S. is in distress---which it is.

So sorry this has invaded your football privileged enjoyment.

Everywhere I look, I see - Black people doing well

[ In Reply To ..]
On TV, in the news, magazines, everywhere. Today, in comcast office, 3 works, 2 were black. So what exactly is the problem? Answer: Inner cities are the source of illegal drugs and those who manufacture it are in Mexico.

Cry all you want but it's a century late and a dollar short if you want a country to call home.

The knee sitters are on the Wrong Page. All a man has is his country and America is being destroyed via financial terrorism, but president who has held office for 8 years and who just happens to be BLACK. Who these black people brought to USA - 8 trillion dollars on the Credit card and a collapsing infrastructure.

Get over yourself. Black Fathers who walked out on their families and black leaders who gave nothing back but "words" are worth discussing though. Where is the billionaire, Oprah? How many parks has she funded in inner cities?

It's because by being well-off, they have more - of a voice. But theyre no less at risk.

They could be killed during a routine traffic stop, just as the not-so-well-off could be.

Exactly. The first guy that did this only donated a million dollars after the fact what about before he decided to take the knee.

By the way, I do not really watch football, however, the NATIONAL ANTHEM was playing so for you to think I do not know the meaning of "taking the knee" is crazy. The National anthem stands for freedom and we as Americans need to show respect. This protest that is going on can be done in other venues. I really hope this does not go much farther.

For Disgusting. - sm

You summed it up nicely and responded to your own posts. The National Anthem stands for freedom. FREEDOM for all. Not to use it as YOU see fit, or what you consider respectful or disrespectful, and what venue YOU choose that it should happen. These people have the FREEDOM to do this. I simply do not like the fact that they feel the need to do it in the first place, but they do and it is their right. Yes, more people are joining them. It is going to go farther. That should tell everyone something. This is their way of speaking out. They do not say a word. They are protesting peacefully. Would you prefer they riot, burn, destroy and loot. I wish this were not happening either but as YOU pointed out, we need to show respect, so you have to respect that these people have the right and the freedom to do this.

racist-to-begin-with police are shooting people of color in the same circumstances where they wouldn't shoot if they were confronting a Caucasian.

They are NOT disrespecting the flag, the country, the Nat'l. Anthem, our service men & women, or anything else. They're simply making a statement in a peaceful and respectful way. People who can't see past their own noses to realize that this is a statement against cops who are not fit for duty. It's not about the anthem. It's not about you.

You can obviously get in your car, drive to the market, get pulled over for a burned-out tail light, and not have to worry too much about getting shot while simply sitting there in your car. People of color have to worry about that every day.

If you don't see that, you're selfish and short-sighted. And possibly bigoted.

Well said! The national anthem protest actually - has another reason as well

[ In Reply To ..]
In fact, the third verse of the Star Spangled Banner is the one which is being protested (and obviously other symbolic reasons), which, from the link attached (CNN, despite what many would think, NOT Communist News Network), refers to a British regiment comprised of slaves promised freedom. He found them treasonous, but was a-okay with owning slaves, so go figure on that!

"The national anthem's forgotten lyrics
"The Star-Spangled Banner" was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 about the American victory at the Battle of Fort McHenry. We only sing the first verse, but Key penned three more. This is the third verse:

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,

That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion

A home and a Country should leave us no more?

Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

The mere mention of "slave" is not entirely remarkable; slavery was alive and well in the United States in 1814. Key himself owned slaves, was an anti-abolitionist and once called his African brethren "a distinct and inferior race of people."

Some interpretations of these lyrics contend Key was in fact taking pleasure in the deaths of freed black slaves who had decided to fight with the British against the United States.

In order to bolster their numbers, British forces offered slaves their freedom in British territories if they would join their cause during the war. These black recruits formed the Colonial Marines, and were looked down upon by people like Key who saw their actions as treasonous.

As an anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner" has never been a unanimous fit. Since it was officially designated as the national anthem in 1931, Americans have debated the suitability of its militaristic lyrics and difficult tune. (Some have offered up "God Bless America" and "America the Beautiful" as alternatives.)"

Sorry for the double quote marks, but I think you get it.

I personally appreciate being educated on this, something I never knew. I myself do like the national anthem, but I do NOT see this protest as a betrayal, considering the things going on in our country and the history above. I am glad it is drawing attention to these issues, since not a lot else has done so.

I would be only too happy if people boycotted the NFL because way too much money (tax free!) is made by those CEOs and owners, and we as taxpayers are being bilked to build the stadiums.

One thing I do dispute Kaepernick on is this statement re our presidential candidates:

“Both are proven liars, and it seems like they’re trying to debate who’s less racist,” Kaepernick said, according to USA Today. "And at this point ... you have to pick the lesser of two evils. But in the end, it’s still evil.”

Yeah, no. Not so much IMHO. It seems he did his research with the national anthem, but not so much with our candidates, since this is a false equivalency thanks to lazy media trying to make this a horse race. I think we know who the real racist is in this race and it ain't Hillary.

There's nothing disgusting about it. It's the exercise of free speech. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
An extremely civil exercising of it at that. They are not burning the flag. They are not rioting. They are not creating any kind of disturbance during the singing of the national anthem. They are simply kneeling instead of standing, making their statement respectfully.

What is disgraceful is that they feel the need to make such a statement because of what goes on in this country.

If they want to make a statement fine. But during something where - people PAY big money and want to ESCAPE

that people are paying the big money for. (Although actually most of the audience for sports events is paying very little--they are watching it on the cable they already pay for to watch other things.)

As for escaping politics, anyone is free to simply ignore them. They are not demanding you respond, discuss their politics, or otherwise engage with them.

As for backlash--anyone of color in this country knows all about "backlash," otherwise know as racists and bigots.

And look how much money they make, millions a year. - Boycott the NFL!
