Well, I got the botox...

Posted: Jan 24, 2012

it didn't work.  I just came from a pain management specialist who listened to all of my symptoms, wrote it all down, asked questions about my background, medication history, and has pronounced me with rebound headaches from overusing Fioricet,Tylenol, Advil, Maxalt.

I didn't take any pain medication this morning so I could go in there in the midst of symptoms-I wake up with the headaches every morning-and give her a good explanation.  She said I could keep doing what I was doing, but it really came down to I need to stop taking the medication altogether.

I am in such pain.

She just said to be good to myself, try to reduce stress which is causing my headaches, relax, etc. and as the meds go away the headaches will go away.  I need to know what to do about this pain I have to go through. Has anyone been through this?  Anything else I can do to ease this?

But, again, I don't know your exact headache history. I replaced my firm mattress with a soft and bought a better pillow. My headaches were starting in my mid-to-upper back. Increased aerobics to 1/2 hr per day mandatory. Pain killer I used with no problem was Frova.

good idea, I think I'll get a new pillow - catladynotcrazy

I have been exercising at the Y, at least I was until we were hit with snow last week. I'll get there for sure tomorrow morning. Funny, I have never even transcribed the med Frova. I'll look it up. I need to work on getting back on Flylady.net to get my house in order, the lack of organization is a big part of my stress, I think. It's not a hoarder situation, but there's a lot to get done, don't have enough family cooperation. Just talked to my DH and explained it all, and he cracked up when I told they thought I might have control issues and try to take care of everything. He could barely control his laughter. He said he'd help me more to get our lives organized, and hopefully I'll feel better. Right now this pain is killing me though. Arrgh.

What kind of headaches do you have? I had occipital for years, now entire head. Have they mentioned an occipital nerve stimulator? I heard they work well and they can put it in if you don't have any hardware in your neck. Also I got occipital nerve blocks for years which helped. I hope they can help you.

I used to get severe, frequent migraines, in - addition to frequent regular - (sm)

headaches. For many years no medication worked on them. Fiorinal worked for a while, but eventually stopped working. There was a period of a few years when I had no meds that worked; Excedrin Extra-Strength/Migraine sometimes dulled it, but not usually.

What I would do to ease the pain during my headache attacks was to lie down in a dark, quiet room. I would put an ice bag on my head, which helped immensely.

I found there was a special trick to being successful with the icebag treatment. The headaches were usually one-sided, and often there was a particular spot on my head (maybe with an artery or nerve near the surface?) where if I pressed hard on it with my thumb or finger, sort of like acupressure, the pain would momentarily be dulled, or sometimes even stop. If I could find this spot, and then manipulate the ice in the bag where I could press a large ice cube firmly against that spot instead of my finger, I could often eventually relieve the entire headache. The trick there, as well, is - once you find that spot, and feel some relief in the pain, try not to move at all. Lie as perfectly still as you can (comfortably) for as long as you can.

Sometimes it would work for me in a relatively short time (30 min. to an hour), and other times this was a several-hour affair.

Also, during times when I was traveling, and didn't have an ice bag, a cold washcloth on the forehead and my thumb stuck into the above-mentioned sore spot, combined with a dark room and not moving, could sometimes work.

Fortunately, once I went through menopause, the headaches became very rare, and much, much milder. Concurrently, starting on an anti-depressant (Zoloft) seemed to help with the migraines. Either way, now that I'm in my 60's, they're not a problem.

On another note, I do still sometimes get a different kind of headache - a morning headache that I wake up with. I have mild to moderate sinus disease, and most likely some allergies (probably to dust - I'm a lousy housekeeper, and I have cats). For the sinus headaches, my best weapon is a combination of 1 dose (2 tablets) of either Excedrin Migraine or Extra-Strength (both have the same incredients), combined with 1 to 2 tablets of Sudafed (decongestant). I get the best relief if I use the "real", old-school Sudafed which contains pseudoephedrine, which you now have to buy at the pharmacy. The other kind, which contains phenylephrine, is less effective, but still better than nothing. The generic ones are just as good, but cheaper.

If I wake with a headache, I make treating it a priority. I take the Excedrin with breakfast, or, if I can't have breakfast right away (like I'm headed out the door or something), then I take it with a big glass of MILK. Even better is to also take an antacid, such as Prevacid, with the milk and the Excedrin if I'm not going to be eating breakfast right away. Often, by the time I get where I'm going, the headache is almost gone.

Anyway, that's what works for my particular brand of headache. Obviously, everyone's are a little different, but if you keep trying different things, you're likely to find one thing, or even a combination of things, that work well for you.

Has Anyone Gotten Botox For Headaches?Dec 19, 2011
I have had headaches for 10+ years, been on SO many meds...I am trying botox tomorrow at the urging of the neurologist. It's covered on insurance.  The only med that works for me really well is Vicodin, and they don't want to give me that long-term.  Right now I take Fioricet, Maxalt.  Anyone have experience with botox or any input from transcribing reports? ...
