Nail thickening

Posted: Jul 2, 2014

Although the possibility of toenail fungus kind of grosses me out, I'm having to consider this possibility.  I would like some input on whether or not this is possible.  My fingernails and toenails have thickened over the past several years, not yellowed.  I can actually grow really strong fingernails now, which I couldn't ever do before.  The problem comes in trimming my toenails and the thickening.  I'm not really sure it's a fungal issue.  I'm 46 and probably at best premenopausal and had a complete thyroidectomy about 10 years ago.  My thyroid levels are perfect and have been for a long time.  I'm not sure if the thyroid could cause this as regardless of perfect thyroid blood draws I'm still very hot and cold intolerant, so could this just be a side effect of no thyroid!?!?  I can't figure out why they're thickening and if an OTC would work for this or if I need to see a doc for a rx.  Anybody with info on this?!?! TIA

My toenail fungus started with one thickened nail without any discoloration. Then it progressed to yellowish brown. I have been using an OTC antifungal but it doesn't seem to do anything. I also think before I realized that I had a fungus that I spread it to other toenails by using the same clipper. Best to see a doctor. I can't afford to see one so just live with it. Try to keep toes dry and go barefoot or just sandals as much as possible.

Thanks Stacy - anon

Thanks for the input. I did go ahead and make an appt with a DPM. Figured it can't hurt and I'd like to catch it sooner than later. In the summer I'm always barefoot or in sandals so I guess that's good. I just keep getting ingrown toenails from trimming them and that's a whole other problem if it keeps up.

I have just one toenail that does this. It's -sm - KT

a toe that seems to have a lot of pressure on it from shoes, hiking boots, exercise class, ice skates, high heels. It always has a corn at the tip, too. I try to keep the corn filed down and the nail trimmed as best I can, though it's so thick it's resistant to nail trimmers. When the pain is acting up, I found some wonderful gel toe-caps online that I bought to protect it from undue pressure. They just slip right on, easy to wash with soap and water, very comfy. They're sold by California Gel Concepts. Maybe they would help?

Here's the link below.

This was on the Today Show years ago, & it works: Soak your feet in white distilled vinegar once a week for four weeks, 20 minutes each time.

After each time, I would pour the used vinegar into an old vinegar container, labeled it as USED, & stored it away from food.

Why would you store the used vinegar instead of just dumping it down the drain?

When I'm occasionally condemned to the cesspool, I get a hospital in rural Missouri, and the doctor there advises for nail fungus to soak their foot/hand in warm water for 20 minutes and then apply Vicks Vapor Rub.

I'm going to try these ideas. My toe nails have been a problem for years. Wouldn't mind if a couple of the nails went away (which might actually happen). Gave up on nail clippers long ago & have to use a small grinder to trim them. It works great, not always comfortable, but it's the only thing that does the job.

Anybody Use Butter Nail Polish?Nov 23, 2013
Any opinions on Butter nail polish?  Not about the price, but the performance.   I see good reviews on Amazon, but also a few bad ones.  One that has me concerned is a claim that it weirdly peels off like aluminum foil in a day.  That happened when I topped one brand with another, but never one brand alone. There is also a comment that it smells like vinegar 48 hours later.   I am interested in the "top and tails" set, specifically.   Thanks.   ...

I was prescribed Jublia. I was told I would use it for a year and the cost to me is $40.00. Heard the medicine was extremely high priced. Has anyone here had any good results with any home remedies I could try instead of the entire year $40.00 each time medication? ...

Obama's Executive Power Pen Is Already Worn Out Much has rightly been made of President Obama’s promise to bypass Congress and act unilaterally to get things done.  “I’ve got a pen and I’ve got a phone,” he said, threatening to sign more executive orders and blast more messages from his bully pulpit. Since then, defenders have argued that Obama has signed relatively few executive orders compared with other modern presidents.  But all exec ...

The Trump Nail In The Media Coffin.Dec 22, 2016
probably will not often communicate with the nation via traditional press conferences. Nor will Trump likely field many questions from New York/Washington journalists. What we know as "the media" never imagined a Trump victory. It has become unhinged at the reality of a Trump presidency. No wonder the fading establishment media is now distrusted by a majority of the public, according to Gallup -- and becoming irrelevant even among progressives. Once upon a time in the 1960s, all the ic ...
