Have you tried Effexor?

Posted: May 22, 2012

If so, do you consider it helpful? Has it caused ankle edema, breast swelling and/or hair loss? What other side effects have you noticed? I feel I'm at a place where I need something to pull me out of my severe mental anguish and have tried various antidepressants over the years but the side effects always caused me to stop taking them. About 15 years ago I was prescribed Effexor, and immediately I felt an alleviation of anxiety, but the insomnia was awful. I told the prescribing doctor I hadn't slept for 3 days and she said, "Well, that won't kill you." She refused to prescribe or suggest anything to help me sleep. I quit her and the Effexor at that point. I would like to try it again but have read horror stories online about the difficult withdrawal and am afraid to try it again for that reason, yet I keep thinking that might be the one that's best for me, aside from the insomnia and other side effects I tend to get from these medications. Any comments from current or previous users of Effexor?;

I used it in the 1990s when my husband was quite ill and I needed something. I had no real side effects, and was on about 75 mg, although you have to start at the lowest and work up.

I wanted to try it again now but even after my copay, it would have cost me $175 a month.

They have a website where, if you qualify financially, you can get the Effexor for free. I am on it right now, after being on Cymbalta. I have an occasional headache and breast tenderness, but it has helped with my hot flashes. The Cymbalta, overall, was bettemergency room but I switched cos of my hot flashes with menopause. I, too, have insomnia, but I've had it all my life, so really can't blame the Effexor!

I have tried Effexor and understand the problems you are talking about with the insomnia. My doctor prescribed Remeron (mirtazapine)for my insomnia and that made a world of difference. Effexor has worked the best for me regarding anxiety and depression. I have been suffering from major depression for the last 12 years since my 2 older sisters passed away from viral encephalitis and congestive heart failure from legionnaires disease and my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer and my father with Alzheimer's, all of this within 2 years of my first sister dying. The only problems I have experienced with withdrawals is that I became extremely emotional and tend to cry constantly at the news or anytime I think of my family that is no longer around. I was also leary to restart it because of everything that I read, but I haven't experienced that in 2 years and I am really bad at compliance when I am in my depressed state, so I think if any of those horror stories were going to happen I would have experienced it by now. Find a good doctor who listens to you and understands that sleep is an integral part of being healthy, and don't settle for a doctor that doesn't show interest in your overall health. I do very well when I take my Effexor regularly and have purchased a watch with a vibrating alarm to remind me to take my medicine.

Thank you both for your replies. To the one who lost two sisters and then had the onslaught of more severe family tragedies, my heart goes out to you. I haven't been the same since losing my mother and sister. I cry over most TV shows, good or bad; even someone just being nice to me makes me cry, I feel so alone. Thank you for your helpful advice. I think I will give Effexor a shot after reading your response.
