CPAP USERS???

Posted: Apr 15, 2010

Hi.  Just had a sleep study test.  They think I have sleep apnea causing my hypertension (which I've had forever I'm afraid) because know the medications aren't working as well.  My question is basically has anyone had success with the CPAP machine?   The people I have talked to say they are never compliant with it.  Since I usually sleep on my side or on my back - I am dubious about expending the time and money for one!   I was a little pi--ed off when I found out if they do issue a CPAP I'll have to have another sleep study to calibrate it....  Any opinions pro or con would be welcome!

I've been on it for a year and a half and have been 100% compliant. It is very hard for some people to use it, but I admit I was so desperate and so sick that by the time I was finally diagnosed, I was willing to do absolutely anything.

The sleep tests were the worst part for me. Make sure you get a machine that is data capable so you don't have to do a sleep test every year.

Once I got the machine, the main problem was finding a mask that fit. It's going to be a pain in the patootie, and you have to pretty much accept that and make a conscious decision to work on finding a mask and using the CPAP or else you may not be compliant. If you're not compliant, you won't get any benefit from the CPAP.

I have a "full face" mask, which means nose and mouth (and not the whole face). I can lay on my side with the mask, but I understand it's even easier to lay on your side with a nasal only mask. There are also some contoured pillows that work well for side sleepers. There are products to make the masks more comfortable, and I recommend going to a sleep apnea forum online to get some helpful hints and advice.

My blood pressure went down when I went on the CPAP, so I hope yours does too. Good luck!

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea last year after being admitted for atrial fibrillation. I was fortunate that the place I had my sleep study did a split night study so I was titrated on the CPAP machine the same night as the diagnostic portion of the test. The tech there let me try out different types of mask before the study began so once the titration part of the study began, all they had to do was to hook the mask to the machine. I also use a full-face mask that covers the nose and mouth. The problem that I have had is being diagnosed with bronchitis and a URI and having a severe cough for a couple of months. The full-face mask is hard to use then because you are basically rebreathing back your germs when you cough or sneeze. I did notice a reduction in my blood pressure too and have tried very hard to be compliant. Having a heart attack or a stroke is simply not worth the noncompliance.

Well, I didn't have sleep apnea I have periodic limb movement disorder - which is basically a neurological diagnosis. I just don't understand if I'm moving so much in my sleep why I can't burn off some calories! Will start a new med and keep you posted. I had some apneic episodes but not enough to be fit sleep apnea diagnosis.

Any Users Of Sewing Machines Out There?Apr 17, 2014
I have an approximately 15 year old sewing machine I picked up in a lawn sale.  There is no user's manual with it.   It worked great for a while, but now it's alternately knotting and leaving loops on the underside of the cloth.  Any idea if this is an easy fix?  Or should I take it to a repair shop?  I don't want to spend a bunch to fix it if it's something I could do myself.   ...

CPAP ProblemFeb 28, 2015
Last Tuesday, I started on a trial period using the CPAP.  The company gave me a loaner of the machine, mask, and hose. Because I'm immune compromised, I asked them whether anyone had used the equipment before me.  They assured me they autoclave everything before they give it out. On Thursday night, exactly two & a half days after I started the CPAP, I came down with a bad head cold.  This is the exact incubation period for the cold virus, and I'm extremely reluctan ...

Reddit Users Fed Up With Hillary Clinton'sOct 28, 2016
No, you didn't just imagine or suspect it. "Correct the Record" (pardon while I choke) is the Clinton PAC from which these disgusting creatures are spawned - and paid. Infesting the Web, they're not the least bit interested in correcting the record, but in misrepresenting the record, spreading misinformation, and often attacking anyone who posts anything negative about Clinton (or positive about other candidates), frequently with filthy, vile insults. ...anonymously, of course ...

CPAP MACHINE (sleep Machine) Feb 21, 2010
I got one on Monday and for some reason I take it off at 3am. My DH said he came in later to check on me and I snoring like a logger. When I wore it in the hospital for the test, it was much more comfortable than this one. Maybe I keep the straps too tight so no air will blow out. And maybe after a while I will get more use to it. My DH has had one for about 10 yrs. and I always punched him when his machine made a sound but he hasn't punched me once. In your mind can you imagine 2 people in ...
