waxing

Posted: Nov 18, 2010

Has anyone ever done a Brizillian waxing at home on themselves?  Is it really hard to do it yourself?  In my area, it costs anywhere from $50 to 80 and I just do not have that much extra every month.  Any advise is greatly appreciated.

I have, but the cost of the materials is going to run you about the same as going to the salon, so decide which you would prefer.

Buy a QUALITY waxing kit and strips, soothing or calming oil, medical quality scissors and tweezes and a styptic pen. Get these from one of those beauty supply stores, not your local walmart.

Trim the hair as much as possible, but not so short that the wax won't stick. wash area with warm soapy water, allow to COMPLETELY dry!

My salon tech applies a light dusting of baby powder to the areas and then applies the wax in long, narrow strips, not whole big batches at once! Press down a few times to make sure you get all or as many hairs as possible and YANK in the opposite direction of the hair growth.

I would NOT advise waxing the same areas more than twice at one time because you could begin to remove skin.

tweeze any strays, use the styptic pen on the little bleeders and then apply the calming oil or lotion. Use a tea oil to remove any left over wax. Allow the area "calm" down before you get dressed. (words of wisdom here!)

It's a long, messy process at home by my experience, so it's worth the 35 plus 5 dollar tip to go in every other month. They do it all in less than 10 - 15 minutes as opposed to my home session that will run approximately half an hour plus!

Just the description of the procedure is awful to hear. I'd like to know what kind of idiot decided this is "in fashion".

It's funny to think that in the 60's women burned their bras, wanting to "go natural".

Our grandchildren will probably look back at this idea like we look at those awful corsets from the 1800s and think, "Why would anyone torture themselves like that?"

I sweat profusely and therefore I am always damp and uncomfortable. I originally did it because of the irritation of the constant dampness and without the hair, feel much better, just like shaving your legs, armpits, etc. I like waxing better because it lasts for about a month or so and you do not have to shave every other day. It is not painful. Just a quick little sting sometimes when you pull the wax strip away. I even have problems with my eyebrows itching if I wait to long to wax them. I have never been one to do what is "in fashion" just what makes me comfortable!

I don't like looking like a 70's porn woman! My hair grows long, thick and almost up to my belly button and also creeps down my thighs! If I let it go I dare say I'd look like a cave woman! I absolutely wax down there, my arms too! (you could braid my arm hair)

That it has nothing to do with fashion is right, it has everything to do with wanting to wear a pair of shorts and now have my curly q's poking out!

I started about 15 years ago, i'm in my late 30s. It isn't painful if you have a great waxer and I've even got it down at home. I only wax once a month now, "Hollywood" style.

Women who don't have issues with sweating or abundant growth of hair shouldn't knock it or do the immature "ew, yuck, or whatever condescending smirky snarky remarks" because it's a personal choice.

We are all free to make personal choices regarding our hygiene and physical appearance. You do not have to approve, but it's certainly childish to snip.

Wax on my sistah!

You and the other poster have stated legitimate reasons. I was just appalled at Nell's description of the procedure (about styptic pencil for the bleeding points and not trying a second time because it would remove skin. I was starting to feel nauseous).

I am a light-haired, light-skinned person who has very little hair to begin with and I'm sorry that I didn't see it from the other side.

Yes, I've tried it myself, my advice is DON'T! There is technique to the pulling... - CaliDeb

A good waxer will have a really good fast pulling technique. There is no good way to do this by yourself...it is just a painful, time-consuming mess.

I disagree. I've been doing home waxing for years. no fuss, no mess.
