Most of my posts are in another part of the forum, and I asked a question there that's really more fit for this board, so I'll ask here.

For those who post anonymously,  have you thought about taking a moniker and posting under it exclusively?  If not, why not?  I posted here anonymously for awhile until I got the feel of the board; it took me a few weeks to feel comfortable enough to adopt a username.  I don't use sockpuppets or post anonymously; if I have something to say I would not want associated with my name, I just keep it to myself.

I ask because I notice that those of us who use monikers often have assumptions about our posting style and content, often without the other posters even reading beyond the subject line and username.

Those of you who have a set moniker - how'd you choose it?  I love hearing this kind of story; mine's pretty simple and self-explanatory, as I'm from Louisiana - "girl raised in the South."  :)

Anybody can adopt your moniker just - grits

as I did in this example and it will seem as though you are the one posting. They may not always post as you would and you may not see all of their posts to clarify that they are not from you.

Oh, sure - authentic grits

I know that - it happens a lot on other forums.

I use - grits

because I'm a grandma raised in the south.

To answer your question, the anonimity provided by not sticking with one screen names protects those who don't:

a. Have the self confidence to stand behind what they say.
b. Use multiple monikers to suit their split personalities.
c. Have issues with stalkers and need to remain unidentifiable.
d. Prefer other websites to identify themselves by their real names and only come by this site to stir up trouble using changing monikers.

Those are my thoughts and I'm sticking to 'em.
which grits is this? - : )

Had to change since someone else has been using my first 2.

I live in the Pacific Northwest. Favorite joke: Our state flower is mildew.

Been using the same moniker for a couple of years - ZvilleMT

and picked ZvilleMT because I'm from Zanesville, Ohio. What's really funny is with that moniker, I've met several MTs on this board that live in surrounding towns :)

You're right, though, about assumptions based solely on our monikers. I do think that's why some people post using anonymous or use no moniker at all - sometimes that's a better way to get a point across without being attacked.

It all depends - Many monikers

It all depends on what I am discussing. Here I've gone by Bad Cook when I am looking for some cooking advise (I'm not a very good cook). However, I am an excellent baker and when I post about baking I've used Baker Bee. I'm certainly not going to post my delicious recipe for pumpkin muffins and use the moniker "Bad Cook" LOL I've also used Anonymoose, cos one time I wasn't talking about cooking, just something else and I have a pic of a moose and that popped into my head. I've used other monikers here too, just depends on the subject matter being discussed. As for the political board you are talking about I post under many monikers there too. I am a conservative and I realized that people were disliking my posts before they had a chance to read the whole thing. Know this because I posted a long article once with a link and immediately after posting I realized I wanted to change something so I went back in (took me all of 4 seconds to fix it and when I got out I had 2 dislikes. I know for a fact nobody had time to read what I posted. Also, I found myself getting ganged up on by the usual posters, so I just stopped using that moniker. Guess what? I didn't get ganged up on/bullied anymore. Also was tired of being called "idiot" "stupid" "ignorant" and the oh so favorite being told I'm "low on the education pole" So just stopped posting under that moniker. If I ever feel in the mood to get into arguments I'll use my moniker I used to, but frankly I don't need that much negativity in my life. A lot of times I will just use nm or the end of my sentence is just 1 sentence is enough for me to contribute to the conversation (example: I'm tired too. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to become rich? nm or "Are you sure about that? That's not what I've heard. Where did you hear that?") Sentences like that don't need a long drawn out repetition of the same sentence. If I'm sitting here thinking of what to use as a moniker for more than a few seconds I will use anon. Just for your information though I used to post under the moniker "what if". Stopped using that months and months ago. I think it is just a preference thing. I also have different monikers because sometimes I like a variety in my life.

I forgot to add - Many monikers

There are certain posts because of their monikers I will not even open their messages. Since I know I will disagree with what they say and whatever they write will not be right, I just don't read their posts. Saves me the headache of wondering why in the world do they think like that LOL.

You said in your post that if you don't want something associated with your moniker you keep it to yourself, I wish more posters took your lead. I read so many posts that I sit there with my mouth open saying "no, you really didn't write that did you? Bad enough thinking it, worse actually writing it for everyone to see".

For the most part, I will never use my moniker again. Just was too many attacks, ganging up, bullying, and negativity.
