What would you do - new glasses

Posted: Dec 14, 2012

Around Oct. 1st went to eye doc and got a new rx. for glasses. I've worn glasses for 40 years and progressives for the last 10 years.  I went to a well-known glasses company to get the glasses. Yes, I'm fortunate to have some insurance, but still paid over $350 out of pocket because I went ahead and got the best of the best progressives as they said it would do away with the blurriness at the edges that comes with progressives.  At any rate, got the new glasses and couldn't see! It was like I had tunnel vision - I could see okay straight ahead like in a box, but everything blurry at a distance or to my sides.  I went back to my eye doc who tested me again and came up with the same rx.  So, the major chain re-did the lenses. The 2nd ones were a bit worse.  Tried them a couple of weeks, went back and they re-did them a 3rd time.  Got the 3rd ones yesterday and still cannot see.  I hav to wear my old glasses even to drive at night.   I'm at a loss. I have about a week before the time expires to get my money back on them and my insurance reversed, but I cannot see.  Should I contact the eye doc and tell him my prescription is wrong (because I think that is what it is - I can see perfectly well out of my old glasses and the eye doc did say my prescription had changed).  But what will he do about it - I'm out glasses costing over $600 and the aggravation and trouble and time.  I would have to go to a new doc, get a new rx, and start over with another company once my insurance had been reversed.  I've NEVER had this much trouble in my 40 years of glasses wearing . Something is not right, but who is at fault?  Your opinions?

Return them for refund now, since you only have 1 week to do - so. Then get second opinion. nm

Did you ask your eye doctor to test the glasses - to make sure they were

[ In Reply To ..]
the prescription s/he wrote? Our eye doctor is quite happy to do this for my daughter's glasses and sometimes they are not quite right. However, since you had them remake them 2 times, like you, I would suspect the prescription is wrong, but I'm wondering if it might be something weird about the "best of the best" progressives.

Thanks. Yes, s/m - mollymt

Yes he tested the lenses when he rechecked my prescription. I'm getting ready to call him right now. So why pay mega bucks for the "best of the best" progressives when I actually see worse than the cheapest progressives in my old glasses. But because I see better out of my old glasses, I'm really thinking it is the prescription, although he says it is right and well, the lenscrafters aren't at fault it was my prescription wrong. I just don't know when one it is. I just don't have time to start from scratch, but guess I'll have to take the time.

I think the optometry thing - is kind of a racket anyway...

I go in for an eye checkup every year (paid for by insurance and takes about 30 minutes), and almost always end up being sold a new pair of glasses, frames, etc and walk out with about a $400 bill. I don't really feel I've needed new glasses for about the past 4 years I've gone.

I do not have the progressives, just the kind with the line, as I have had problems with the progressives in the past. But, as far as computer work goes, I had a pair made up for computer work only, which I stated was for seeing about 18 inches or something like that (I do not remember exactly). This works very well for me. I also use them for playing the piano, so I do not have to rear my head back and cock it at an angle in order to see the sheet music. Every time I come in to the eye doctor, I bring my computer glasses, and the doc says they should still be fine, with no changes. Works for me!
Then don't buy them - just say no

agree. Try not getting talked into new ones... sm - Dewey.

Unless you need/want them, of course. I go to a small-town eye doc, and though he always asks how the glasses are working out, he relies on my judgment if I want new ones. Never pushy. Have not needed new ones since 2009.

For the OP: Did the shape of the frames change? I noticed a difference in vision when I went from smaller to larger frames--the lens angle changed and made things a little blurrier (not as bad as you describe, though). I hope you get this figured out somehow, but I understand how frustrating it can be.
Oops. The "but" should be "because." nm - Dewey, self-editing.

Always offered glare protection but never got it. This year - I opted for it and it was well SM

worth it. Makes a major difference on eye strain from sitting in front of the monitor. Cost $500 but I take excellent care of them, including covering them with a towel if I am using hairspray) and expect them to last several years.

Beg to Differ... - I got the glare protection too

and after several years, it started "flaking off" as it is a "coating" they use and nothing more. Now I have "flaked off spots" in my range of vision and it makes it difficult to see. I also have the progressive lenses and do not care for them at all. Wishing I could afford to make a change, but I cannot right now. This has been my experience only. Not looking to get bashed, flamed, or argued with.

I am extremely careful not to alcohol cleaner, use only - eyeglass soft cleaning rag, keep SM

them in a case when not in use. Hopefully, mine will last a good long time. But they definately help with eye strain.
I was extremely careful too... - but after about 4 years...

the coating still began to wear off. I hardly use them at all any longer. These too were from Lenscrafters.
Well, you cant expect them to last forever. Mine are from - a private eye practise. nm

four years is not - forever....

and costing over $400, they should have lasted longer than that. The prescription itself has not changed, but cannot use them due to the "spots" in front of the eyes where the coating has flaked off.

Lens Crafters?

Yes! Why do you know something? or had similar problem? - mollymt

I would appreciate any information if someone had a similar experience.

I've been wearing glasses for 25 years or so. Never had a problem with them, until I started to get severe, chronic tension headaches and eye strain. To cut a long story short, I was having these horrible headaches because my Lens Crafters glasses were made incorrectly--repeatedly. I didn't find this out until I went elsewhere and bought new glasses--headaches and eye problems went poof gone and my eye Dr said bad lenses would have caused my problems.

A year or two after I resolved my issue, I heard a blurb on the radio about a study that was done on eye glasses. Turned out Lens Crafters came in last in the quality of the lenses and proper crafting (prescription was made correctly, etc).

I will never, ever go there again.
Thank you! - mollymt

Headed back there today to return my glasses within the 90 days and they'd better refund my money and reverse my insurance benefits. I will start over again at the other well-known place I went to 3-1/2 years ago that did it right. Lenscrafters was in my insurance network; the only place was not. I found out only too late that the other place offered a discount because of my insurance company and I could submit an out-of-network claim and actually still pay less in the long run.

I think you hit the nail on the head in your post. They got $600 out of you! Get your money back ASAP and go someplace else. I tried progressives and HATED them! I could never find and focus on the bifocal area. I never wore them and when I went for my next yearly exam, I told my doctor I never wore them and he got mad at me for not telling them I was having problems and bringing them back.

When I was younger my mom took me to the doctor and he gave me these horrible glasses....I kept complaining to my mom that I couldn't see. She took me to another doctor and there was nothing wrong with my vision. I asked him WHY the other doctor gave me those glasses and he said "I don't know, maybe he needed money".

You don't have to trust anyone with your vision....go someplace else.

Eye Glass Scam - DollarTreeGirl

Dollar Tree glasses work well for me. I have a pair for computer work, a pair for watching TV and a pair for the car. Just label them. When they break, it's no biggy. Just get a prescription for contacts for whatever else.

I would like to know if anyone has used these glasses and, if so, what results you had with them.  I am having trouble with eye strain with excessive computer use and have read about the glasses and am just wondering if anyone has had any experience with using them.  Thanks ...

Anyone Use And Have An Opinion On Those Gunnar Optik Computer Glasses? Sep 01, 2011
I have been getting horrible headaches, prob migraines, and I think it's bc of the eyestrain staring at my screen prob 12 or more hours a day.  I was hoping to hear from someone who uses or has used these glasses before.  My regular reading glasses give me a headache too when used on the computer.  I am hoping these are different, but they are kind of pricey at about 80 bux.  But if I knew they worked it would be worth it.   Thanks in Advance! ...

Anyone Have An Idea How To Wear Glasses With A Nose Injury?Oct 20, 2010
Yesterday, my husband was grinding the rust off a metal lawn mower deck. The grinder caught on a piece of metal and in a flash, bouced up, hit his safety goggles and knocked them and his glasses to the top of his head and took a little chunk from the side of his nose (thankfully did not hit his eye) right where the nose piece sits about 1 inch, plus gave him 'road rash' on the tip. He's having trouble wearing his glasses. We have tried everything we can think of to make ...
