Tattoos

Posted: Jul 30, 2013

Hey gals (and guys) :-)  Thinking of getting my first tattoo for my 40th birthday.  Was wondering, for you tattoo lovers out there, how many tattoos do you have, how old were you when you got them and what are they of/what do they mean?

Not sure if I want something that's just cute or if I should get something with a meaning.

My first one I was 17 and I actually got it covered up last year. I'm 37 now and I have accumulated around 20 over the years, with most of them being in the past couple of years. Every one of mine mean something to me, several are Latin writings (I like knowing what my tats mean, even though others don't.)

My entire upper back, from the bra line up is tattooed, very expensive artwork and I get tons of compliments on it. My others are my wrists, one arm, top of shoulder, foot, both clavicles, neck, front of both hips and lower stomach.

I LOVE the feel of a tattoo and love the sound of the tattoo gun even more. I'm all out of spots for tats though, I only have certain places I will let be tattooed, so no more for me, lol.

I would like to get a Beatitude verse Matthew 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled. OR Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. Maybe with a little dove symbol.

My cousin has Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God, with a little dove, and I love it!

I like that too - Me

I think versus and such are so pretty on the ribcage.

I have one on my ribcage/side from Emerson, To be yourself in a world that's constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. It's large and my very first one, but it meant a lot to me and I knew it would always be something I would feel the same way about the rest of my life.

I get a new wardrobe every few years. - A permanent mark would drive me insane.

I get tired of seeing the same things over and over. I think a tattoo would drive me over the edge after a few years, even if it was meaningful to me.

I thought about it about 10 or 15 years ago but - nn

I thought about getting one when I was in my late 30s to mid 40s, but then decided against it after picturing myself as an old lady in a nursing home with a lot of wrinkles and tattoos, so decided against it. I agree that they can be a work of art, but I remember the first time I ever saw someone totally pretty much covered and it really made me feel weird and again, thinking about how it would be for them when they were older and in a nursing home.

I can't imagine my wrinkly skin being any more "pretty" without the tattoos, lol, at least my caregivers can have something to look at:)

I've only "seen" it a couple times with a mirror and forget it's there sometimes.

I have and probably always will have hair to cover it or if I want to show it off I can. But it's for me. I got it in my mid-40s. A friend of mine and I decided to just do it one day on a whim. She got a small quarter note on her her hand for the music lover she is.

I love spiders. I get very sad when I hear someone has killed a harmless spider, but of course I offer a little leeway for bad spiders ;-)

If I happen to find one in my house I capture and release outside.

I LOVE seeing tattoos on people, but I'm satisfied with just the one.

I'm wanting to get more I think I would like one that I could see. I was at a concert last night and everybody there was over 55 and mostly upper middle class and I was shocked at the women who had tats. In my water aerobics class, too. My dad had a pink rose on his left forearm and I wish I had a pic of it because I would get one just like it.

Forgot to say I was 50 when I got them, never regretted it. nm - Freebie

I have 2 -- large butterfly with some tribal-type design around it on my ankle for my 34th birthday. (For whatever reason turning 34 bothered me more than any other age, and I'm now 46!) I had always wanted one, but kept hearing people say negative things about tattoos and the people who have them. Finally decided it was something I wanted, something I liked, and something I would be PROUD to have and I wasn't going to let others decide it for me or judge me for it. Image itself has no special meaning other than I liked the design the guy came up with and purple is my favorite color. Second one is a Celtic/tribal-style double heart on my shoulderblade. Don't remember exactly how old I was, but around 40. I collect hearts and I like Celtic/tribal designs/patterns. I found an example of what I liked, and tattoo artist came up with an individualized design for me.

I would say definitely chose a design that means something to you or even that you design yourself. Even if it's not a deep, profound meaning, it should be something you choose for a personal reason and not just a random, mass-produced, looks-like-everyone-else's image.

My daughter has an entire sleeve that is made up of images which all represent different members of our family -- I really like that idea.
