So much for self pity

Posted: Jan 14, 2010

Every time I give myself permission to finally feel terribly Polly Powerless with our downtrodden situation at the Q, something just has to happen to make me realize things could be worse.  Any check and any work available certainly seems much more acceptable than what those poor people are facing in Haiti right now.  Still feel entitled to a few tears for myself, but have to spill the majority of them for those suffering so much greater loss.

Yes, the Haiti situation is very bad, but I find it interesting - L&L

that we're getting help to Haiti sooner than we did to those unfortunate people in New Orleans after Katrina.

Interesting observation. I had almost forgotten about that horror. I live an hour south of the city, and it is awful to remember the people who died because our government dragged its feet instead of sprinting to help.

former admin showed reckless disregard - asleep at the wheel

They even knew Katrina was on her way.

take discussion to political board - honestly!

Everyone knows those people in Katrina did not leave because they were waiting for their welfare checks that we due on the 1st of the month, paid for by you and me and every other hardworking American. They were given fair warning- my word, I live in Wisconsin and I remember it was all over the Weather Channel telling those people to leave, this was going to be a big one. Also, aiding an earthquake is much different than a hurricane- spare me the political nonsense. The earthquake is over, the aid can now move in quickly. With hurricane winds and rain rescue cannot happen as fast.

Such talk sickens me. The majority of the people who were still there had no way of getting out. Over 3/4 of the people in New Orleans and surrounding areas have no cars and live at a below poverty level. Buses and trains did not start to take people out until after the disaster occurred. The weather had been clear for DAYS before any help started arriving - didn't you watch any of the news coverage? The "B" administration really dropped the ball big time.
Strange, I didn't get a welfare check, I stayed for work - pipe down Wisconsin!

Nobody at the hospital I worked for was waiting on their welfare check! We were told if we didn't report to work at our very next shift after the "all clear" sounded, we'd lose our jobs! Makes it kind of tough to evacuate, does it not? Until you go through a natural disaster in person, Wisconsin (and I'm not talking a blizzard or an ice storm), don't judge. Just because the media tried to portray everyone on the gulf coast as creepy welfare losers doesn't mean you have to believe everything you see on TV - there were plenty of upstanding taxpayers there as well that had much more to lose than one month's welfare check!
Perfect. Thanks for the chuckle. - nm

No reason to repeat a horrible mistake - Old part-timer

New Orleans was a horrible blunder, but I clearly remember watching the mayor in the hours before the storm angrily refusing help from the governor and federal authorities. Of course, he had no idea how bad it would get, no one did, but the horrific delay in aid to New Orleans should never be repeated when it comes to helping anyone in need.

Different Pres in power at the time of Hurricane Katrina - makes a difference

What a guy, what a guy!
The underwear bomber didnt kill anyone & hes in jail. - The quake has killed 1000s who need help NOW.

You cant even BEGIN to compare the two. One was a non-disaster. A failed attempt, while the quake succeed quite easily. Nature cant be prevented or apprehended. This disaster will affect Haiti (and the US) for decades to come.

All that means is that we have learned from our mistakes. - sm

The ineffective response out of the former administration when viewed in retrospect teaches us how NOT to act when faced with this magnitude of human suffering. Here's hoping Mr. Bush can do better the second time around now that he has agreed to partner up with Clinton and Obama in fund-raising efforts.
