Keurig...yay!!!

Posted: Mar 14, 2012

My hubby bought me a Keurig coffee station today, the Mini single-cup machine.  He got me a 12-pack of Starbuck's House Blend to go with it, so imagine our surprise when we realized the unit came with 12 pods of different coffee and 1 tea.

I'm so excited...I'm a total coffee fiend and this is my cafe' dream come true, LOL!

Does anyone else have one and enjoy it?

this morning at 2:00 a.m. I woke up, wide awake, turned on the TV and there was an infomercial for this coffee maker on. I've never heard of it but it was so interesting that I found myself actually watching it for about 10 minutes. I think it was all those different coffees that came with it that intrigued me. What a nice gift from your hubby!

Yes! I have one and - love it!

[ In Reply To ..]
We got ours back in November of December of last year. I was skeptical, because I drink three cups a day, which was technically at the six cup line on a regular coffee pot. I absolutel love my Keurig, and will probably never go back to a regular pot. I love that I can drink two different types of coffee (I love flavored coffee) if I want to, and now that I have this I'm only drinking two cups per day most of the time. Before I was always worried two wouldn't be enough, plus smaller servings don't seem to brew as well as a half or full pot. So, I'm actually drinking less coffee but loving it more! Have you tried their apple cider? Love that as well! The kids love the hot chocolate, too. Love, love, love it!!!

Got one for Christmas - SingleMT

I really think it was a splurge for just me and my one-a-sometimes-day habit, but I really, really enjoy the convience of it. What color is your mini? I have a friend who wants one in red. Kohl's had the red one on sale this week, not a bad deal paired with their savings pass. I enjoy the flavor varities. I bought a reusable filter in case I want to just use my regular coffee, but I am still enjoying the newness of the machine still and use the Kcups instead.

Mine is the chrome version (sm) - AuntieAnxiety

[ In Reply To ..]
He actually tried to get me the red but Target only had chrome or black, and the chrome goes pretty good in our "retro" fifties-style kitchen.

I'm on my second cup already (tried Emeril's Bold which was excellent and now am having a cup of the Gloria's Hazelnut with some Truvia and cream...not sure I really like the Truvia but maybe I'm just used to Sugar in the Raw, lol!).

I'm placing an order on the Keurig website for sample packs (5 pods) of various coffees, cocoas and teas tonight.

This is the best gift I've gotten in awhile, since I'll for sure be using it every morning and every night...Working the night shift, it's going to be such a treat to take a quick potty break, put on something to drink in the Keurig, and have it ready by the time I'm done in the bathroom, lol!

oh, I absolutely hate mine - heres why

[ In Reply To ..]
It does not fit right under my counter, so I have to pull it out to lift the top. Not to mention, I cannot afford the K-cups. It is so expensive. I got mine at Christmas from my daughter, and I wanted it badly, but I just hate it. So, anyone wanting a slightly used Keurig, shoot me an e-mail and make me an offer. This was the $159.00 special from Target.

I do like the Caribou Coffee the best though. Also, Starbucks has a new "Blond" coffee which is the bomb if you can find that in a K-cup.

Possible solution for you - LoveMyKeurigs

[ In Reply To ..]
The KCups are a bit pricey, especially if you get them at the "wrong" place. Sam's Club and Costco have good prices. I get mine from Amazon.com in boxes of 50, which ships very quickly for free (you have to be sure it is sold and shipped by Amazon itself not another seller.)

Grocery stores and places like Target are the worst. Kohl's seems to overprice them so much that their sale coupon does not help. Bed, Bath and Beyond can be ok with a 20% off coupon.

Your solution though would be the EkoBrew filter, which I prefer to the one Keurig makes. You put your own coffee in it. That ends up being very economical, because you don't waste coffee. The filter works really well, cleans easily, and of course is reusable.

Going to look up the EkoBrew filter. I have - mthead

the one Keurig makes but I'm too lazy to use it all of the time. My hubby uses it all of the time b/c he hates to spend the money on the K-Cups. We get good deals on coffee at Costco and my MIL orders hers online from Green Mountain Coffee.

I absolutely love my coffee. Here is my question. What makes the Keurig coffee different than regular coffee makers. Okay, I maybe showing my amateurity at the fine cup of coffee :-) here. But I have a regular coffee pot and I buy a coffee called Millstone. I like their Foglifter and the Bed & Breakfast blend. The coffee is creamy and always comes out good. Never made a bitter pot in about 6 years. My coffee pot died a couple weeks ago and I splurged a whole $29.00 for my coffee pot and I love it. I'm just curious as to why you all like your Keurigs. I pulled up a website and it is a pretty coffee maker, I am just curious why you like the coffee and will spend a lot for one of the machines.

About Keurig - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The Keurig makes one cup at a time by forcing water at a specific temperature (some models allow you to adjust this) through a measured amount of coffee grounds, tea, or other beverage) in a sealed container (a K-Cup) consisting of a paper filter in a plastic holder. This is engineered to produce what is basically a perfect cup of coffee every time. The product is very consistent. There is very little carry-over from one cup to the next, allowing everyone to have what they want.

Since each K-Cup is sealed, it is exactly like opening a fresh bag of coffee every cup. There is no measuring, no fussing with storing grounds, no inconsistency, little mess, and no wasted leftover coffee. There is no rest of the pot burning on a heated plate. It is fast, with models varying from 3 minutes to about 1. Some store preheated water. It is kind of like an espresso maker for coffee.

Many models allow you to adjust the cup size, depending on the model, from 4 to 6, 8, 10, 12, and possibly 16 ounces. The regular K-Cups were designed to make 8 ounces. A "bold" K-Cup can make a 10 or 12 ounce cup. (It has more coffee, not darker or stronger coffee.) Many users find that they can make 16 ounces from a bold by running water through twice.

If you drink 1 cup a day, be it 8 or possibly even 16 ounces, you only need one K-Cup. This can be reasonably economical and very convenient. It is difficult to make that amount in a regular coffee maker and then there is a lot of mess. You also do not have the problem of buying a pound of coffee and having to wait unil it is gone to try something else; you can enjoy a variety because the K-Cups have a long shelf life. They are individually dated.

Keurigs also serve to just heat water. Although there are hot chocolate K-Cups, many people prefer regular packets of Swiss Miss or something. You don't have to boil water on the stove.

They are very easy to clean. The K-Cup holder pops out and is dishwasher safe. If it clogs, it can be unclogged very easily with a paperclip or twistie tie. The drip trays are dishwasher safe, too. The rest wipes clean.

I have had a Cuisinart for about a year. I keep a mini in my office. We also have a variety of other models at work. Almost everyone loves them, especially the people who hate having to put up with someone else's flavored coffee. They are perfect for offices that do not have a sink.

Bed, Bath and Beyond is a good place to buy them. Use a 20% off coupon. If you get a dud or decide you hate it, you can return it.

To see what is available in K-Cups go to www dot Greenmountaincoffee dot com. Some excellent roasters like Tullys, Diedrich, Barista Prima, Starbucks. Newman's Own, Green Mountain, Timothys. You can get Millstone. You can get Folgers, too, although aftr a year of better brands everyone at work spit it out.

Coffee People makes some really good stuff, especially if you are into getting wired from your coffee. Their Jet Fuel lives up to the name. They also make a Donut Shop that is very close to Dunkin Donuts.

For tea, Celestial Seasonings has a very good English Breakfast that makes 16 ounces ok. Their herbal teas are also good. Twinings is a little weak, like their bags. I did not like any other brands of tea.

Many people at work try one there and immediately rush off to BBB to buy their own. We pass around Green Mountain catalogs and keep up with which online sources have the best prices. We trade new flavors like baseball cards and when someone gets a flavor they do not like, it is easy to trade for something you like. For Christmas, a couple of K-Cups and a biscotti in a cute bag make a nice little gift.

Keurig usually rates above other pod makers. It also rated high by Consumer Reports.

I feel that I get a better brew for less cost more conveniently. I am willing to pay a little more for the consistency, the potential variety, and the convenience.

I use the hot water from the Keurig to heat - mthead

up my kids' Thermos containers in the morning so their food is still hot at lunchtime. Also good for Cup-of-Soups too.

I like it overall b/c my DH gets up at 5 and I don't get up til 7, so I'm not drinking 2-hour-old coffee. On the other hand, we get up at the same time on the weekends and will brew a big pot with our regular coffee maker.

The other good thing is that when you have company, you don't have to make a decaf pot and a regular pot; your guests can pick and choose what they want. I have several friends from the UK who actually like the tea from my Keurig :-)

Keurig love! - needmorecoffee

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to try to make 1 or 2 cups of coffee with a regular maker, but got myself a Keurig and LOVE IT! It's hard to explain, but it does brew the perfect cup every time, whatever your preference. My hubby and I love hot apple cider and love brewing a cup in the evening, or a cup of tea, or hot chocolate for the kids, or whatever we want. I thought it was awfully expensive (and still do) but if anyone tried to take it, they'd have a wild woman on their hands! (speaking of which, off I got to my Keurig :)

Don't like it. It doesn't make a large enough cup of coffee. nm - oldtimer

How big a cup do you want? - How I do it

[ In Reply To ..]
This is a common complaint but it does not have to be that way.

What size do you want? Regular coffee Kcups tend to be weak--that was the complaint when they first came out--but the BOLD Kcups make 12 ounces easy.

If you have a mini, which makes 3 sizes, just make the middle size twice,or the largest then the middle, or whatever until you get what you want.

You use the same kcup. Brew twice if your machine does not have the size you want. Just open the head and close it again without moving the kup so it does not punch new holes.

This does not work well with flavored coffee because those are made with light roast. It comes out watery to begin with. It does not work well with Gloria Jean's, most of which are flavored. It did not work with Folgers.

It does work well with anything robust and medium or dark roast that has Bold or Extra Bold on the label. I get the best results with Caribou, Diedrich, Newman's Own, Tully's, Coffee People. One Coffee People kcup will make a giant mug.

I make 12 to 16 ounces from one kcup all the time. In fact, I never make less.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but hubby has a Keurig... - sm

I found some of the best hot chocolate at Wal-Mart in the K cups. I definitely put it to use in the winter when I'm cold, and it helps my sweet tooth, as well. Yum-o!

It tastes just like the stuff I used to pay $4 a pop for at Starbucks. Also, when I registered my pot, I got a coupon code for buy 2 K-cup 22, 24 or 25 counts and receive 2 for FREE.

Unless something dire were to happen, like my machine exploded in my face, I feel safe in saying at this point I'll never go back to a regular brewer after the assortment and convenience of the Keurig. What an amazing invention!

Oh brother, "those types" even have to attempt to stir up drama in a thread about COFFEE MACHINES.

I posted a FACT about your beloved K-machine, and you respond with ad hominem attacks, stating I'm too poor to afford one, am here stirring up drama, etc.

You know NOTHING about my income.

There is NO drama in a factual statement.

The ONLY (PATHETIC) drama in this thread is you hyperemotional and irrational people drooling over an appliance that you forked out a lot of money for, ergo you DO NOT want to hear ANY bad news about it because YOU worry that you have been "had," i.e. made a fool of.

Try Googling it. You wil be amazed at the number of hits you get.

Try reading reviews on amazon.com. I almost bought a machine, that is why I looked into it extensively before purchasing.

Nobody ever said that appliances don't wear out and then croak. Congratulations, you just shot down your strawman.

I gave up after they sent me the 4th one free for warranty issues. - neverakeurigagain

I had one of the more expensive models a couple years ago when they came out. The first one lasted about 2 months before it started having issues (clogging and eventually pump failure). The second one that they sent me free of charge after a half hour on the phone doing all sorts of diagnostics and macguyver type things to clear the problem lasted about 6 months. The third had the same issues, clogging and pump problems. Again, another half hour on the phone doing diagnostics and home remedies. That one lasted another 6 months. When they sent me the 4th one, I gave up and gave it to a friend who was moving and in need of a coffee maker. It lasted 7-8 months for him. My brother-in-law is currently on his 5th machine because of the same issues and friends of ours are also having issues with theirs. My brother-in-law says that eventually they do give you grief about having to replace them free of charge. It was the biggest waste of 170 bucks for me. Never again. I use a 6 dollar camping filter. The coffee tastes better and it doesn't waste counter space. For those of you who have purchased them, I believe Bed Bath and Beyond now has a policy where they will take them back and give you a new one or give you the full refund price. That wasn't the case when I had mine. However, if you actually call Keurig with problems, it will be a half hour of your time every time. Maybe they've improved over the past year or so, but I certainly had a lemon as does everyone else I know who has one, and again, these were the supposed higher end models.

Mine says "prime" after every 2nd cup - and getting worse

[ In Reply To ..]
I only got it for Christmas and it keeps telling me "prime." Sometimes after every 2 cups, but sometimes after every cup. This just started last week, and not sure what is wrong with it. It makes lounder noices than it did before also.

If you are using nonfilted tap water, you could - mthead

[ In Reply To ..]
be getting mineral buildup within the machine. This used to happen to my MIL. She also did have something go wrong with one of her Keurigs, but Keurig replaced it and she was eventually able to fix the broken one (not sure what the deal was).

Most people I know use filtered tap or bottled water to keep their machine running well. We have very hard water here and that is what we have been doing from the onset with very little trouble.

Descale it with vinegar - Sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Cruddy water can be an issue. I use Brita filtered water. It is still hard, but has less corrosive components like chlorine and no particulate matter. My Keurig also has a water filter, which helps. Won't work with a clogged filter or air bubbles in the line. If you have limescale buildup in tour toilet and shower, you have it in your coffeemaker. That is not a design fault. Certain types of softened water might be problems, but I do not think I would drink that anyway.

Look online for troubleshooting guides.

There were issues a few years ago that Keurig fixed. BBB has had a replacement policy for all purchases for years, which is why you should buy from them. The machines are sold for less than it costs to make them, so looking for bargain pricing is usually futile.

No doubt this is a luxury item. Not suited to everyone. Nothing wrong with that. Some prefer getting along without a food processor, too.
I was actually used bottled water from the store - neverakeurigagain

and polar water from a delivery service and still had so many issues with mine. I don't know how much they've changed in the last few years because all of the issues I had completely turned me away from them and I don't foresee ever trying one again. I've had a Krups coffeemaker for the last 10 years that works perfectly well and my husband bought the Keurig thinking it would decrease my coffee intake, which it did. I've just gotten to the point where my countertop space is at a premium, so the Krups is back in its box in storage and the Keurig is of course long gone, and I'm making coffee through a cheap filter every morning, which takes a little longer, but in the end (a) at least it works and (b)I have a lot more counter space in my kitchen. Good luck to those that have them though; hopefully they've worked out the kinks and everyone will stay happy and caffeinated.
Bottled water or not, you still have to descale - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
If you went through 4 of them, it is something you are doing, not a product defect. Bottled water contains minerals that form lime scale, just like tap water. The harder the water, the more there is.

As in another post, you also neeed to rinse the k-cup holder if you use flavored coffee or hot chocolate and you also have to clean the needle at the bottom every now and then.
I did descale as recommended in the instructions - neverakeurigagain
[ In Reply To ..]
The second and third ones were actually pump failures and that is per the customer service person at Keurig. No rhyme or reason as to why. The machine would attempt to draw water to brew the coffee and I could hear it running, running, running, and then as a safety feature to prevent overheating (I think that's what they told me, but it's been awhile), it would shut itself off. Sorry, but I think all of it was a lot of hassle for the "convenience."

Yep... very disappointed. - WIMT

[ In Reply To ..]
My Keurig is not even 2 years old, cleaned it on a regular basis, never used tap water, always used filtered water or jugs of water from the store... didn't even use it on a daily basis since the cups are so expensive, and sometimes just made one cup for early morning and then used my drip maker for the rest of the day. Anyway, for the last 6 months or so, it just started not making a full cup. Sometimes it would make the full up, sometimes just an inch in the bottom of the cup. My mother-in-law had the same problem with hers. Pump just stopped working correctly and she also used only filtered water. Her's wasn't even a year old when it failed. I was so excited to get mine but I won't buy another one now. They are too expensive to only last for a year or two.

I think that is one of the problems my MIL - mthead

[ In Reply To ..]
had with hers, but it was a tricky thing because sometimes it would brew one-third of a coffee cup and sometimes it would brew the whole darn cup; she never knew what she was going to get, LOL!

Descale it & also clean the needle in the kcup holder - What I do

[ In Reply To ..]
The maintenance instructions online address that problem. If you get partial cups you need to descale according to the manufacturers instructions and clean the needle in the kcup holder by passing a straightened-out paperclip through it.

If you get muddy coffee or it has grounds in it, you definitely need to clean the kcup needle by passing a paperclip through it. That is a clear indication that the neede is clogged.

Even bottled water can contain a lot of carbonate. That is especially true of springs flowing from limestone aquifers.

Coffee grounds can clog the needle. Coffee residue can build up, too. Some coffees and beverages contain milk or sugar, and even gum thickeners. Those dry in the needle, creating a sticky clog. That would be very likely if you did not use the machine more than once daily. You are supposed to run a cleansing cup (run plain hot water with no kcup in the holder) after hot chocolate or iced tea kcups. I think you should do it after any creamy, sugar-sweetened, or flavored coffee like Gloria Jean's that contains gum fillers, artificial sweeteners, and other noncoffee components.

When Keurigs first came out, kcups contained only coffee. I don't think they realized what would happen with flavored coffees, hot chocolates, latte-type beverages, and sweetened iced teas. I think bits of tea leaves are very prone to clogging.

I get the partial cup problem every so often, usually accompanied by grounds in the cup. A vigorous rinse under hot water making sure to direct the water through the needle helps sometimes, and so does brewing plain water, but passing a paperclip through it does the trick.

You are describing a CLOGGED NEEDLE. - Cleaning it should fix it.

[ In Reply To ..]
Agree, you are describing a clogged needle. Grounds and sticky residue are clogging the needle that punctures the bottom of the k-cup. The coffee can't get out into the cup. It can be intermittent as the needle clogs and unclogs, then permanent as it jams up so that coffee can't blow it clean.

This is well-known and appears on the Keurig website. The fix involves cleaning the needle by inserting a wire or straight paperclip through it.

A preventive measure there tells you to rinse the cup holder after hot chocolate and iced tea.

Had company a few weeks ago and they bought a Keurig coffee maker for us along with a variety of coffe "pods". So far, I have not found a coffee we like as much as Folger's 100% Columbian medium dark roast. All the ones we tried seem either too strong too acidic. Looking for suggestions on which coffee to try.  Not sure I would have purchased one of these "gadgets" as it is pricey and the "pods" are pricey, but it is nice for that first cup in the a.m. and even a late afternoon ...
