Jack Russells anyone?

Posted: Jul 20, 2010

My husband would really like to have a Jack Russell so we were researching them a little last night and I saw where they don't seem to get along well with cats.  The direct quote was this:

... are commonly known to harass, injure or kill other small pets, such as cats, birds, rabbits, mice, rats, etc., simply due to their strong natural hunting instinct. Raising a puppy with a cat does not guarantee the cat's life-long safety!

I have 4 cats of various ages and, as Dr. Phil says, this is a deal breaker for me.  Anyone have any experience with Jack Russells and cats?

Try a Corgi instead. I looked into Jack Russell's too and I have an old cat and didn't think it would be a good idea. The neighbor has two JR and when they get out they harass everything in the neighborhood!

I had that experience with a JR, too. He bit me on the back of the calf. - Backwards Typist

All I was doing was walking past the house.

When my dad found it, he did a little checking (he was a cop) and found out I wasn't the first one he bit. More like the 10th person in a span of 2 weeks.

How come such a cute dog can be so nasty?

has a 2yo female, and she is sweet but very, very hyper. She has not caused any other animals but is kept in her crate when they bring out the boys' hamster.

Another person down the road had a JR which got out and killed another neighbor's outdoor cat. It was an unfortunate situation, but it could have been avoided by not letting their cat roam around the neighborhood. I think a few neighbors were actually relieved about that one. Regardless, no I don't JRs belong around cats.

I have 2 jacks, both raised by a breeder who also bred a specific breed of cats. My JRTs are NOT good with cats. My female has been around my mom's cat since she was a puppy, and around the breeder's cats before we brought her home, and she absolutely would love nothing more than to chomp the kitty. My male, as good as he seemed around the breeder's cats, would also love to take a bite out of my mom's cat. VERY high prey drive. My male is also very sensitive to crying babies and toddlers, the noises and screeches that they make.

Jack Russells are one of the breeds that were very popular a couple years ago due to being in several films and TV shows, but once people realized how much time and energy these dogs require, far too many of them have ended up in shelters and rescue organizations. Please, please, please do not take on the responsibility of one of these super intelligent, loving, highly energetic dogs if you have doubts about whether they can coexist peacefully with your cats. I'm not saying that they absolutely cannot live with cats, but in my experience, it's not ideal.

Thanks everyone - Stella-JRG

I know they were overbred when they got popular on TV because they are so darn cute and that doesn't do the breed any good because some people just breed them for the money. Friends of ours have one and she is super hyper...just ran the whole time we were there the other night. I had a sheltie who died in 2008 and he was very highstrung too and I always said if we got another dog it would be a mutt from a shelter or a rescue. I was looking on a JR rescue page and they all had the word cat with a big red X through it and quite a few had dogs and kids with the same red X. That really tells me something. Thanks again.

Best wishes to you and your husband. So sorry to hear of the loss of your sheltie. Kudos to you for being responsible and looking into this before pursuing it further - only wish everyone would do that. BTW, I grew up with a corgi/JRT mix, and she was FANTASTIC with kids and cats, but did like to chase turkeys, groundhogs, and rabbits. She lived a long, active, and healthy life and was absolutely the best dog ever.

Don't know how they are around cats, but I do - ht

I have never not had JRT in my life. They are a challenge for sure. I also have over 3 acres for running and spend a lot of time training. That said, mine do fine with my 4 cats aging in range from 3 to 17. He's never offered to chase them. I also have 2 parrots and he doesn't care one bit about them at all. JRT's are not for the faint of heart. My Oliver will go after smaller rodents and snakes, but with the command firmly in place, he will stop and come back to me, albeit a bit reluctant :). Just remember they are bred to chase and hunt and that is why they are so good at it. They are also pretty durn intelligent and if you don't show them the way you want it done, well, they'll just go and figure it out on their own. I love them, but I don't recommend them for everyone. It's so great that you are researching beforehand, kudos to you!

My first encounter with a Jack Russell was HORRIBLE! - see msg

A friend had one, as well as lots of cats and some teenage kittens. One day when I came to visit, her JR chased a kitten under some steps (JRs are BRED to chase things into holes and kill them) and we had to listen to that poor kitten being torn to shreds, screaming the whole time, until she was finally silent. The dog killed the cat faster than we could pry up the steps to save it. In later months, I kept hearing about all her neighbor's chickens that it killed.

Those nasty little dogs are basically pit bulls with short legs. I wouldn't get one even as a single pet (they're insanely hyper, yappy, and destructive), but most CERTAINLY not if I, or any of my next-door neighbors, had cats.

I love my JR! And I have an indoor kitty as well. Sometimes i'm not sure who is chasing who but half the time they play and half the time they ignore each other. Definitely no problems here. Birds are a different story - she loves them and squirrels.

The dog that played "Eddie" on "Frasier" (real name Moose, I believe), killed at least one of the kitties that lived at the studio. Because they wanted to present the dog as this harmless little creature, the studio tried to keep it quiet but word got out anyway.

So, what you read doesn't sound entirely off base compared to what I heard years ago about "Eddie"/"Moose."

The people who live behind my parents in the foothills had one named Renfield. My mom thought it was really sweet that every chance he got Renfield would come to visit her. I just realized my mother had about 6 cats hanging around her property...maybe it wasn't my mother that Renfield was visiting, lol! She might have saved those stray kitties by distracting Renfield stuffing him like a sausage.

Hmmmm....

LOL! (i woulda filled him with some buckshot!) - n/m

LOL, if she would have suspected he was hunting kitties, she would have! - Mom is pretty scrappy herself, lol!

She might not be very big or wield the shotgun very well, but she'd have tried!

i believe there are two types of jack russells. one is slick haired and has sort of long legs. other are short legs and have a what is called rough coat i own a dog that is half jack russell long legged and half rat terrier. she is just past a year old and quite active, jumps, runs, etc. she loves children, wants to play with them. she is very sweet natured and loving, smart as a whip but sort of stubborn. she can be nippy at times which we are working on. has traits of both parents.
