Gel Nails
Posted: Mar 2, 2014
Hi everyone-
I'm going on a trip and am wanting to get a gel pedicure for the trip. A regular pedicure wears off too quickly when you wear socks and shoes, and I'll be doing a lot of socks and shoes wearing because we'll be hiking.
Is it as complicated getting the polish removed as they say? What else can you tell me?;
It's not too bad - CaliMT

You just go back to the salon where they applied the polish to get it off. They have to wrap your toenails with acetone-soaked cotton for a few minutes before they can remove it. After that, just get regular polish as usual so you can remove it yourself. I love my gel nails on my fingers because they don't chip when I'm typing all day, but I prefer my toenails to have regular polish so I can remove it myself when I want to. If you're going to be hiking, though, gel on your toenails would work great. Have fun!
Thanks - OP

So, they charge you to take it off, too? I can paint my own toes after the gel is off. This is like a one-time pedicure thing.
Depends on the salon - CaliMT

Most charge if you don't get another pedicure -- with gel polish or regular polish -- afterward. Some charge extra even if you do get a pedicure afterward. Just ask at the salon where you have it applied. I would get regular polish after they remove the gel if you just want a one-time thing, and then you can do it yourself next time.

I found this polish very difficult to remove, using both acetone and non-acetone remover. It turned my fingernails yellow for months, tried lemon juice, alcohol, many things to get rid of the yellow. Finally had to use cheaper polish to cover the yellow. The original gel polish was done by a nail salon. IMHO it was not a good thing. Perhaps others had luck, not me!
Had this once - removed it myself - Ayn

It takes acetone polish remover and a lot of cotton balls :) You need to use the acetone remover and not the typical/common nonacetone remover one usually has on hand.
I had a gel manicure as a one-time treat - didn't want to pay to have it removed. You can buy acetone remover at Sally Beauty. You do have to soak the polish to get it off - I used a bowl filled with the polish remover. But, you can take it off yourself cheaper than paying the salon to do so.
You could try shellac too - sm

I had a shellac mani once and it lasted for weeks. No chips, nicks, dings, breakage, etc. It is a 4 step process. Base coat. Color. Color. Top coat. After each layer your nails go under a blue light to dry the shellac and it hardens immediately. Instantly. You can get your nails done and dig in your purse and never hurt a nail. It makes them stronger too. Good mani to get if you beat your nails up. The only thing is that it takes forever to take off. You have to soak your nails in acetone for a long time (some people soak cotton balls in acetone nail polish remover and then tape them to their nails for an hour) and you have to scrape it off so that's the only down side (if you don't go into the salon for removal) but if you get regular manicures I would suggest shellac. I wish I had that for my wedding instead of press-ons. If I could afford the upkeep I'd get shellac mani routinely. Just a suggestion but thought I'd throw it out there.
I think I'll pass - OP

I think I'll pass on the gel. Sounds like too much trouble. I do have acetone polish remover here, because it works much better on removing my finger polish than the non-acetone--but I'm not thinking I want to go through all that trouble on my feet for a one-shot deal, LOL.
Like my mother used to say, though, you have to suffer for beauty.

Press On Nails QuestionMay 06, 2015I used to get my nails done professionally. Absolutely loved them, but gave them up years ago because of cost. My nails are awful and trying to shape and paint them myslef looks bad. Does anyone use press on nails that you can buy in walmart or target. If so do you like them. Used them over 20 years ago and they just fell off easy, wondered if they improved since then.
Just curious if anyopne has experience/knowledge of these. ...
