FRICKIN' GNATS!!!

Posted: Dec 17, 2009

There are gnats buzzing all over my office!!!  It's COLD outside, I don't have houseplants or fruit in the house, so I don't know where they're coming from.  I left the window open for a while thinking the cold air would kill them off... nothing.

there is a gnat corpse floating in my cup of coffee.  HOW DO YOU GET RID OF THESE PESTS!

I sprayed yesterday too, but have to be careful because I've got a salt water aquarium in the office (very, very expensive fish and corals) and it didn't seem to help.

HELP!!

~buzzed beyond belief.

Set out a tiny bowl of cider vinegar. It's pretty stinky so try to bunch the gnats by placing the bowl some distance from where you are working.

For some reason the gnats think it is fruit and the dive in for a drink and drown. It won't take long either.

Yes like the poster said vinegar is a good way to get rid of them but make sure you put some sort of plastic over the dish and put tiny holes in it so they can go in but not come out. Another way is to leave a glass of wine with plastic over it in your office. I found that accidently one year by leaving a wine glass out. Good luck.

That's a waste of wine!! (Just kidding, well... not!!)

Thanks for the tips. I put the vinegar out last night in a "bee catcher" my mom dug out of her work shed, and there are some corpses floating in it this morning.
Less flying about in the office.

It's just odd...I wonder where they came from.

Thank you both again! Merry Christmas.

We had this problem about 6 months ago. Finally we noticed that coffee left in the coffee pot over night got rid of them. For some reason they like cold black coffee. Never saw them again. They nearly drove us crazy. They were all over the house and we have no plants at all.

I get them too from time to time - sm - Laura E.

I think ours appear more if we don't clean out the cat litter box every couple of days, or leave moist(dried up in the bowl) cat food out for too long, also when any fruit gets a bit ripe too of course, but usually it is because of the cat. I have done the trick with the wine and plastic wrap too which does work to some extent, but mostly I just kill them as I see them. Then tend to only come out at night here and gravitate to my computer screen I presume because of the light. Haven't had any for a couple of months now so I am happy, but have been more vigilent about keeping the cat box clean and not leaving food out too, helps a lot.

Being a single (and how!) MT for so many years (cough, decade-plus), haven't exactly been around men all that much, in the social sense - yes, I've been a bit of a nun.  So in my painting class, it's kind of "Rainin' Men" if you get my song reference. Besides, that I LOVE PAINTING.  I go to my painting class, and sometimes when I get home...I paint some more. So, in class, I am joking around with everyone else, making my (to my mind) witty comments, having fun.&n ...

Gnats - Help!Apr 14, 2011
Ladies!  I need help.  I have had gnats for about a month now.  Not hundreds of them, but a few every day.  They are driving me crazy.  I bought houseplants about 5 weeks ago, make sure to buy high quality potting soil - Scotts and Miracle Gro - to decrease my chance of infested soil.  Things were okay for about a week, then the gnats showed up.  I put all the plants out on my screened lanai, getting lucky bamboo inside (no soil) inside.  The gnats are st ...
