Dry ham, need something to spice it up some

Posted: Apr 3, 2013

I had a spiral ham for Easter the other day. My husband who is diabetic cannot have the added sauce that comes with it. I used to, back in the day, use cloves and put brown sugar over the top fo the scored ham and it was soooooo good but now because of his not eating/liking, do not do. Does anyone have a suggestion as to another topping I might use that would not be sugar based and still be tasty. TIA;

pineapple juice? - orange juice?

I suppose those have a lot of sugar too! My sister used to use pineapple juice and Sprite.

I have always done the brown sugar and honey drizzle.

Cant help you any further than that, I am a horrible cook.

I really like ham. But I stopped eating it when I looked at the sodium content. Isn't high sodium bad for diabetics also.

Splenda - NK

makes a brown sugar version that he could eat. I used to use brown sugar and Coke on ham and would probably mix Splenda with diet Coke. There's also pineapple that doesn't come in heavy syrup and is lower in carbs.

Smear w/unsweetened apple sauce or a mango, or sauteed onions, add it to an omelet. NM - NYMT

You could always fry it until it is deliciously browned . . . thus eliminating the need to slather it with goo.

Nothing wrong with plain old ham, though. I don't understand why the need to glop it up with nasty sweet goo.

I also like plain ole ham but this ham really - Question here

had not much of a taste, sorta blah, that is the reason I was trying to sweeten some but I think your ideas as well as some of the others fit just fine. Thanks.

This has nothing at all to do with MT, but I love that Old Spice commercial, and now Brigham Young University has made a parody of it to encourage library use.  Who'da thunk BYU had such a sense of humor! ...

What Does Everyone Think About "Spice"Jul 21, 2010
Just to prove that I am older than I want to admit, I had never even heard of it until my husband was telling me about someone in his batallion who had been caught with it and was in trouble.  I asked him what it was, but being as out of the loop as I am, he really was not sure, just knew that the Navy has outlawed it.  Just yesterday, I heard a little news story on talk radio about how Jackson County has outlawed the sale of this stuff, so looked it up and I guess it's some kind ...
