Dog + chocolate

Posted: Nov 18, 2009

Last Saturday, I developed severe lower abdominal pain that just kept getting worse and I ended up in the ER.

Anyway, a couple days prior, I had gone shopping and gotten a couple big bags of chocolate covered raisins.  I was still ill from the ER and had fallen asleep.  When I woke, I noticed that somehow my female pug had gotten ahold of one of the bags and had eaten the entire thing (not a snack size bag, a big bag!).  I freaked!!  She didn't even throw up.  As far as I know, the male was sleeping with me in my arms, 10 feet away, the entire time.  I watched for her hours for signs of poisoning.  Nothing.  She's still fine days later.

I had the bag in a place I thought she could never reach but she gets more clever every day.

Any other experiences with their dogs and chocolate?

The other day my daughter and her friend baked about 4 dozen chocolate chip cookies. Her friend left them out on her table to cool and went to bed without putting them away. When she woke up the next morning, her dog had eaten all but a dozen of the cookies. He never threw up and showed no signs of any sickness. I hope your dog is okay.

LOL. Did the dog at least have a guilty look? Mine didn't.

My dog is fine (overweight pug who is on a diet, which is probably why she schemed until she figured out how to get them). It's been about 4 days or so. I hope your daughter's dog is okay too.

I know the dark chocolate is more dangerous.

make sure to keep them up and out of the way because I have 3 kitties here, 1 that wants to get into everything and I had heard about dogs and chocolate. Do not want to run the risk of anything bad happening to my Italian Kitty! Her name is Gina LaBella.

between them. These were milk chocolates, with various fillings. Both of my dogs are large, over 65 lbs. I rushed them to the emergency vet late at night. The antidote seemed much worse than I imagined. It consisted of a liquid charcoal preparation via a funnel into the stomach. Emetic drops into the eye to induce vomiting. They stayed at the vet's office for several hours and were released with some meds, don't remember what they were. For several days, they pooped out charcoal. One dog seemed a bit traumatized by the experience, the other was not bothered at all. I think that they probably would have been OK, as they were large dogs and the amount of milk chocolate they ate was not substantial, but you never know. Better to be overly cautious.

that if my dog eats anything he isn't supposed to, immediately feed him 2 tbs of peroxide once every five minutes until he throws up (got into mouse poison once). Since it has been a few days, it is a little too late to do that with your dog. Also, the amount probably depends on how much he/she weighs. My dog weighed 35 pounds at the time.

After reading the above comments, I think your dog should be fine.

vomiting really works. We used it on our golden twice, once when he scarfed down a baby rabbit nest (6 little ones) and another when he ate a nest of mice. That dog will eat anything in sight that moves. He doesn't care how it tastes as long as it moves and has fur. We finally had to put rabbit guard fencing around our picket fence to keep them out. Got tired of cleaning up dead rabbits at 4:45 in the morning before I had to work. Never did find out who the culprit was, the golden or the cocker.

It takes a very substantial amount of chocolate to hurt a dog. I had the dosage info at one point, but it was really a ridiculous amount. I had a 65 pound shepherd mix who ate an entire unopened bag of Hershey's kisses and 6 giant suckers and never even got a tummy ache.
