Camping "must haves"

Posted: Oct 12, 2009

My hubby bought a pop up camper this past weekend.  I'm excited that this spring and summer we can get back into camping (tent camping gets harder the older you get).  What are your must haves for your camping experience?  Any fun accessories?  Does your camp site look like a living room when you've set up?

Also, besides local campgrounds, have any of you made a real adventure out of it?  Hubby wants to head up to the Dakotas this summer for camping and I wouldn't mind camping near the beach this spring.

seem to take the house. I now keep a box of " in the camper at all times, frying pan, utensils, tongs, paper plates, paper towels, trash bags, bug spray, lantern. I also have our chairs stowed in the camper along with our sleeping bags. A nice comfy chair with armrests is a must. I kick back with a glass of wine, put my feet up on the other chair or picnic table at site and chill out. So far we have just stuck to campgrounds. We take our bikes of course, and do lots of hiking on the trails. Our popup is very basic, no heat or air, just a sink and stove and table, sleeps 6, but it is enough, though DH does want one with all the bells and whistles one day.

I couldn't leave the house without toilet paper, Raid and Lysol - mlstoo

Hated those potties in the campgrounds. We finally bought a regular pull behind camper that had its own potty.

We always had pie irons and a tripod for cooking over the fire. Can't survive without those pie irons though! We made all different sandwiches in them and then pudgy pies for dessert or snacks at night in the fire. My family has some great memories from sitting around the campfire making "pudgy" pies! Oooh I am making myself want one right now! The first necessity I would make sure I kept packed in the camper at all times though is a really good first aid kit! The second thing to be sure you have is a fire extinguisher. Very easy thing to forget. We used to wilderness camp so there were no services for many miles. We once camped at a place in Canada where you had to be flown in and dropped off. They came back in a specified number of days and picked you up. That was a little scary to me because if you had an emergency you were SOL - there was no communication at all. Don't think I would do that one again! But at the time it was very exciting. We also used to canoe for days and then camp on the river banks at night. We kept a pup tent and all our gear (not much as you can guess) in the canoe with us. Now, I still love to "camp" but give me a 42 RV with a bathroom and shower, air conditioning/heat, and a real coffeemaker for the mornings instead of that old tin thing we put on the fire from the night before!
