Amnesty Amendment Sneakily Attached to Mammoth Budget - Reconciliation Bill

Regarding immigration, there’s a lot going on now, including the ongoing Biden Border Surge and the Afghan Resettlement Plan.

But don’t take your eyes off Congress. Something being cooked up there would make the current situation even worse – much worse.

It’s a proposed amnesty for illegal aliens, to grant them legal status. Whatever it’s called, an illegal alien amnesty would be disastrous.

Common sense indicates that it’s a bad idea.

Foreigners who hear about a U.S. amnesty, a proposed amnesty, or even discussions of amnesty, are encouraged to enter the U.S. illegally as soon as possible.

I resided in Mexico a decade and a half. Believe you me, Mexicans follow our immigration system and immigration debate quite closely.

I recall once a sixth-grade student of mine confidentially telling me there was going to be an amnesty!

The same is true for other countries.

History proves that amnesty is a bad idea. In 1986, an amnesty bill was passed which worsened the situation of that time and led to the current crisis.

Amnesties are not popular with the American public so politicians think of sneaky ways to implement them.

The latest scheme is to include an amnesty as part of the 3.5 trillion (!) dollar budget reconciliation bill the Democrats want Congress to pass.

An amendment to this bill, offered by Representative Jerry Nadler (New York 10th District) would do just that.

You may consult the actual amendment text here. It uses the bland term “adjustment of status of certain entrants” to refer to amnesty.

So who is eligible for this “adjustment of status”? The amendment actually states that anyone who “has been continuously physically present in the United States since January 1, 2021” is eligible.

Did you get that? January 1st of this calendar year.

The extremely useful and informative Numbers USA website has an article about the amendment entitled House Subcommittee Releases First Look At Budget Reconciliation Amnesty (Sept. 13th)

The article begins thusly:

“On Friday night [September 10th], the House Subcommittee on Immigration as part of the House Judiciary Committee released the blueprints for their disastrous and irreversible amnesty proposal – hidden in the massive $3,500,000,000,000 Budget Reconciliation Package Democrats hope to pass with a bare-bones majority in the House, and just 50 Senators.”

“The proposed amnesty, which Dems hope to include in the Budget Reconciliation package will award green cards to at least 8,000,000 illegal aliens currently living in the United States.”

Here’s the breakdown of the intended recipients as reported by Numbers USA:

“DREAMers” (people who were supposedly 18 or younger when they entered the U.S.) 2,900,000
“Essential Workers” as defined by the government. 5,600,000
“Temporary Protected Status” 320,000
“Deferred Enforcement Departure” 150,000
As for the 8 million figure, who can doubt that it might be even higher?

Would criminal aliens be excluded? It depends on your definition of “criminal.” There are some such exclusions, but there’s also a waiver clause, leading us to believe that a lot of lawbreakers will be amnestied. (Of course, they’re all lawbreakers, what we refer to here are those who have broken other laws).

A Washington Examiner editorial (September 16th) is very aptly entitled “Biden’s amnesty will only make border crisis worse.”

From the Examiner article:

“The Congressional Budget Office estimates that this Biden amnesty will cost taxpayers $140 billion for taxpayer-funded federal programs such as food stamps, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act over the next 10 years. But the long-term cost will be far higher. As illegal immigrants, migrants that work are currently a net bonus to our Social Security and Medicare systems. But if we give them amnesty and they are allowed to draw benefits from these programs, these illegal immigrants will end up costing taxpayers an additional $1 trillion over their lifetimes.”

The eligibility cutoff date is January 1st, so all these people crossing now wouldn’t be eligible, right?

Well, think about it. If they can amnesty those who arrived on or before the first day of January 2021, why wouldn’t they, in the future, give amnesties to those arriving today?
