The door was stuck because it hadn't been open in a while. Henry had been on a trip. A neighbor saw a black man and a cab driver giving the door a shove to get it opened and called the police. Mr. Gates was in the house already when police arrived and told them he lived there. He wasn't ransacking the place of carrying out a TV or the like. Mr. Gates only crime was being highly insulted that they demanded to see some ID, and he gave them some lip. I would probably have done the same thing. The police were way out of line here.
