I'm Australian. Certain media outlets have decided to pick up this story about arsonists and blame them for these fires.
The number of arsonists has not changed dramatically compared to other years.
Yes, some bushfires were started deliberately. It happens every year. But many others were started accidentally or by weather events including dry lightning.
It's the start of January. The worst of our fire season is usually just starting now, not something that we've been dealing with for months already.
How fires started is irrelevant to the fact that these fires are NOT typical in any way. Over the last few years, bushfires have been changing because the fuel load is there, the soil is dry, the air is dry....
The science is there. Facts don't care if you ignore them or think they're wrong, they don't go away.
