Homeschooling has been illegal in Germany - since 1919.

The court's decisions had nothing to do with the family's religious affiliation. Attending public or private school is required by law. I personally think removing the children from their parents was an unnecessarily harsh decision, but they refused to comply with the law. There are posters on this board who regularly and vociferously comment on the necessity of following the letter of the law in the United States (illegal immigration in particular). This is no different. German law, applicable to ALL German citizens.
