Where I used to live, there would be art sales at hotel conference rooms from time to time. There were beautiful paintings done by starving artists who were painting duplicates of famous pieces. They were quite up front about it all, and I felt it was a good way to get beautiful art at a low price.
Also, I one time saw a tapestry in a furniture store that was about $300. I wrote down the artist's name and googled it when I got home. I was able to get the identical tapestry for $130.
Try to google whatever letters you can from the signature and/or a description of the painting.
