had the misfortune of having his stepson die in an accident. The boy's mother was a Catholic and wanted to pay $10,000 to assure that he went to heaven. His stepfather talked her out of it, saying it was ridiculous to bribe God with money for someone else's salvation. (This was in the 60s.) Indulgences were alive and well back then.
