William Bradford and the pilgrims tried socialism/universal whatever you want to call it. Everyone put what they grew in a commune. Some people took more, some less, some worked more and never got compensated, some wives had to work for other people's spouses and vice versa.
Then Bradford gave everyone a plot of land (that's where property rights came from). The result was amazing! People grew so much they sold it and traded it! They had a banquet and invited the Native Americans. They thanked God for their bounty.
