I think I can help you. The problem with writers on the Left is that they think everyone thinks like they do. In other words, if XYZ politician won't support abortion rights or illegal immigration or socialism, they can't be a Democrat. (We're not quite there with socialism yet, but you get the point.)

It's not a purity test. "Evangelicals" don't see themselves as hypocrites if they vote for someone who's had an affair or fallen away from Christian principles at some point in their life. (Some would say true Christians shouldn't vote at all.)

Why vote for Pubs then? Because Dem politicians have been forcing them (Hobby Lobby, Christian bakers, trans bathrooms, California's Reproductive FACT Act, etc.) to do things that violate their Christian principles. It's as simple as that. The Pubs could be all manner of slime and scum (I won't argue that they aren't) but the Pubs don't force evangelicals to violate their beliefs.
