Texas governor pans drilling safety regulations, suggests ‘God’ to blame for BP’s oil disaster

If the very Christian, very Republican governor of Texas is right on this one, he may soon find it politically expedient to rethink his allegiances, what with 2010 being an election year and all.
That's right: according to Republican Rick Perry, no amount of safety requirements can prevent an "act of God," which may or may not have occurred in the Gulf of Mexico, resulting in 11 dead oil rig workers and a gusher of oil jetting over 2 million gallons of crude per day into the fragile aquatic ecosystem.
Initial estimates claimed just 1,000 barrels of oil per day were leaking, but that number was quickly revised upward to 5,000 barrels per day. Current estimates project as much as 50,000 barrels a day are spouting from the sunken rig, and it may yet increase.
Speaking at a benefit funded by the Chamber of Commerce, Perry suggested that tighter safety regulations just don't have anything on God.
“We don’t know what the event that has allowed for this massive oil to be released,” Perry said, according to Politico. “And until we know that, I hope we don’t see a knee-jerk reaction across this country that says we’re going to shut down drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, because the cost to this country will be staggering."
He suggested the disaster might be "just an act of God that occurred."
God, however, does not work for Halliburton, which was cementing the well when the explosion set off. The deity is also not an employee of British Petrolium, which saved a cool $500,000 by not installing "a remote-control shutoff switch" currently required in regulations imposed by other major oil-producing nations.
"Regulators have previously identified problems in the cementing process as a leading cause of well blowouts, in which oil and natural gas surge out of a well with explosive force," The Wall Street Journal reported. "When cement develops cracks or doesn't set properly, oil and gas can escape, ultimately flowing out of control. The gas is highly combustible and prone to ignite, as it appears to have done aboard the Deepwater Horizon, which was leased by BP PLC, the British oil giant."
Lamar McKay, the president of BP, has, for his part, insisted that his firm is not responsible for the disaster. Speaking to The New York Times, McKay hinted at the likelihood of a crucial piece of drilling equipment that malfunctioned.
The statement is especially sober stacked next to those of conservative pundits in recent days, many of whom have engaged in imposing a collective conspiracy "what if" that ultimately points at environmentalists.
"The carbon tax bill, cap and trade, that was scheduled to be announced on Earth Day," quipped de-facto GOP leader Rush Limbaugh on Thursday, arguing that "hardcore environmentalist wackos" were opposed to the bill's allowances for more nuclear power and more offshore drilling.
"What better way to head off more oil drilling, nuclear plants, than by blowing up a rig?" he rhetorically asked. "I'm just, I'm just noting the timing here."
A "theory" quite similar to Limbaugh's made its way onto Fox and Friends Monday, where the hosts and former Bush press secretary Dana Perino engaged in a conspiracy session of their own.
President Obama has said BP is responsible for the disaster and plans to hold the company financially accountable.
"We will keep our... boot on the throat of BP to ensure that they're doing all that is necessary while we do all that is humanly possible to deal with this incident," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Monday.
At time of this writing, the firm was drilling several relief wells to alleviate the pressure jetting mass quantities of oil into the gulf. The process could take as long as three months. Meanwhile, the company is also dumping thousands of gallons of a toxic chemical "dispersant" into the gulf in hopes that the solution will bind to oil molecules and drag them to the ocean floor, where the crude would be absorbed by micro-organisms and other sea life in a best-case scenario. The firm is also trying to place containment domes over the leaks.
"We expect to load out the fabricated containment chamber tomorrow and we hope to have the system up and operating within a week," BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles told reporters on Monday. The dome is the first of three designed to be placed "over the leak sources and allow us to collect the oil, funnel it up through pipework to a drill ship called Enterprise on the surface."
Texas Governor Rick Perry is facing a stiff electoral challenge from former Houston Mayor Bill White, a Democrat. Remarkably, White had drawn within four percentage points of Perry, according to a recent poll.

Even when Bush was simply asked about his faith, and responded with utterly benign statements, like saying he couldnât imagine surviving the presidency âwithout faith in the Lord,â or noting he prayed before committing troops, echoing every president from Washington to Lincoln to Wilson to Carter to Clinton, he was viciously assaulted.
âWe are dealing with a messianic militarist!â thundered Ralph Nader.
âHe should not be praying,â intoned Lawrence OâDonnell to the MSNBC faithful.
Repeatedly, I was called to respond to this nonsense. My retort was agonizingly simple: I merely ran through example after example of American founders, presidentsâDemocrats and Republicansâsaying either precisely what Bush said or something far more extreme, like Woodrow Wilson claiming God called upon him to found the League of Nations, or FDR mounting a battleship leading troops in a rendition of âOnward Christian Soldiers.â
What I said rarely mattered. Every Bush mention of God was a signal, somehow, that this Bible-quoting âsimpletonâ was trying to transform America into a âtheocracy.â
Alas, there was another tactic I used: I quoted current Democrats on the campaign trail, from Hillary Clinton to Barack Obama, invoking the Almighty. I knew that if these politicians reached the White House, theyâd say the same as Bush, or much worseâwith no backlash from the secular media. Quite the contrary, liberals would roll out the red carpet, enthusiastically welcoming faith into the public square.
All of that is prelude to my point here today:
The Religious Left, from âsocial justiceâ Catholic nuns and Protestant ministers to the Democratic Speaker of the House and president of the United States, have been incessantly claiming Godâs advocacy of their healthcare reform. Thatâs no surprise, just as itâs no surprise that the press is not only not outraged but silently supportive. Thereâs nary a whimper, let alone howls, of âseparation of church and state!â
Consider a few examples, most telling in light of passage of the healthcare bill:
Last August, President Obama addressed a virtual gathering of 140,000 Religious Left individuals. He told them he was âgoing to need your helpâ in passing healthcare. Obama penitently invoked a period of â40 Days,â a trial of deliverance from conservative tormentors, from temptation by evildoers. He lifted up the brethren, assuring them, âWe are Godâs partner in matters of life and death.â
Like a great commissioning, in the 40 Days that followed the Religious Left was filled with the spirit, confidently spreading the word, pushing forâamong other thingsâabortion funding as part of an eternally widening âsocial justiceâ agenda. The Religious Institute, which represents 4,800 clergy, urged Congress to include abortion funding in âhealthcareâ reform, adamantly rejecting amendments that prohibited funding. To not help poor women secure their reproductive rights was unjust, declared the progressive pastors. As the Rev. Debra Hafner, executive director of the Religious Institute, complained, federal policy already âunfairly prevents low-income women and federal employees from receiving subsidizedâ abortions.
Here we see the Religious Leftâs continued perversion of âsocial justice.â Behold: social justice abortions.
Early last week, a group of 59 nuns sent Congress a letter urging passage of the healthcare bill. This came in direct defiance of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, which insisted the bill âmust be opposedâ because of its refusal to explicitly ban abortion funding. What the bishops said didnât matter, one nun told Foxâs Neil Cavutoâsupporting the bill is what âJesus would do.â
The liberal media cheered on the nuns, gleefully exaggerating the sistersâ influence. In a breathtaking display, the Los Angeles Times beamed, âNunsâ support for health-care bill shows [Catholic] Church split.â Quoting the nuns, the Times reported that the letter represented not more than 50 nuns but over 50,000. (Iâm not kidding, click here.) Like Jesus with the loaves, the militantly secular/liberal Times had displayed miraculous powers of multiplication.
Finally, last Friday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a Roman Catholic, invoked the Solemnity of the Feast of St. Joseph on behalf of the healthcare bill. She urged American Catholics to âpray to St. Josephââearthly guardian of the unborn son of God. Such overtures are hardly new for Pelosi, who routinely exhorts Democratic disciples to vote the liberal/progressive agenda as an âact of worship.â
All of that is prelude, of course, to what happened the evening of March 21, 2010, A.D., with a rare vote not merely on a SundayâGodâs dayâbut the final Sunday in Lent, the week before Palm Sunday that initiates the Lordâs Passion. To President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and the Religious Left faithful, Jesus, presumably, has gotten his healthcare package.
Amid that process, secular liberals got religion, as their political soul-mates spearheaded this âchangeâ in the name of Jesus Christ. Itâs a quite radical departure from eight years of scourging George W. Bush every time he confessed he prayed. At long last, there is room for Jesus in the inn, so long as the Savior âsupportsâ a certain agenda. Who says conversions donât happen?

I think where Bush crossed the line was - when he said "God wanted

God needs to stay out of politics and politics out of God, don't care who is prez at the time (other than the taxation of churches, in particular the mega churches, which I believe is long overdue). I for one would like to see a president that does not involve God in any way in decisions made that affect us all. Bush was just more vocal about it and with all of his bad decisions, well.....
