Authors: McCain aides worried that Palin was âmentally unstableâ

It's a perfect storm for former lawmaker Sarah Palin.

A book due out this week by political journalists John Heilemann and Mark Halperin has all the right politicos sweating and backpedaling, from John McCain to the Senate majority leader, and even Bill and Hillary Clinton.

But in "Game Change", it's Palin who really takes it on the nose.

According to an advance copy thoroughly dog-ear'd by The New York Times, some McCain staffers who worked directly with Palin began to worry that she could be "mentally unstable."

After her misstatements and outright lies repeatedly caused the campaign to stumble and backpedal, a discussion began to emerge: Were McCain to win, how best could they relegate her "to the largely ceremonial role that premodern vice presidents inhabited"?

After all, "it was inconceivable," they wrote, "if McCain fell ill or died, the country be left in the hands of a President Palin," according to the Times.

The book also claims she almost completely neglected preparing for her debate with Vice President Joe Biden, and couldn't even pronounce his name correctly, calling him "O'Biden" repeatedly.

They instead encouraged her to ask, "Can I just call you Joe?"

The former lawmaker is also being targeted by McCain's top political strategist, who gave a tell-all interview to "60 Minutes".

"There were numerous instances that she said things that were – that were not accurate that ultimately, the campaign had to deal with,” said Steve Schmidt. "And that opened the door to criticism that she was being untruthful and inaccurate. And I think that is something that continues to this day."

Looks like that "mentally unstable" thingy is about to become a self-fullfilling prophecy:

The former Alaska Governor has signed a multi-year deal to serve as a contributor to Fox News, effective immediately.

Liberal feminists hate Conservative women because they are something that liberal women will never be, for example, independent thinkers and doers that have gotten where they are through hard work rather then on the coattails of some man. That is why liberal women hate Sarah Palin. She went from the school board to small town mayor to governor without the help of a man and while she managed her family. In addition most liberal women are actually quite submissive. They cluster around strong male characters and behave like they are in a harem. It is no coincidence that leftwing feminists have a soft spot for Islam.

Liberal women behave like harem with soft spot for Islam? - Do you hear yoursef?

You're kidding. Right? The thinking behind this entire statement is so convoluted it requires no further comment. This absurdity speaks for itself loud and clear.

What a nice, safe little cocoon for her to inhabit. (sm) - Nikki

[ In Reply To ..]
Now she can take her blather to her biggest supporters, and she's not in danger of being criticized by them. Maybe she thinks appearing on Faux News viewers will be enough to cinch a Presidential nomination in 2012 (which would be nice for Democrats).

She should be good for a laugh or two unless she starts to encourage/tolerate violence/hatred as she did on the campaign trail. That's the part that worries me.

What worries me is that people will buy into her - Colleen

[ In Reply To ..]
encouragement/tolerance of violence/hatred~and all the while saying it is God's will or some such garbage, as some unstable people are likely to buy into that that well.
What are you talking about? She does none of that! - Gee.. this is just ridiculous!.nm

For starters, the Alaskan Pipeline, being selected as VP candidate and the Iraq War were all "God's will."

Just Google "Sarah Palin God's Will," and you will find a ton of references to the above.
I share your concern. (sm) - Nikki
[ In Reply To ..]
She has a history of using "God's will" as an explanation for various things, and she has indeed shown "encouragement/tolerance of violence/hatred" on the campaign trail, so this, to me, as well, is a very valid concern.

Book 'Game Change' portrays Sarah Palin as unstable ignoramus who believed Saddam was behind 9/11

The gossipy new campaign book that has the political world buzzing portrays Sarah Palin not just as an ignoramus who believed Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11 but also as possibly mentally unstable.

"Game Change," the 2008 deconstruction, says the stress of vaulting onto the national stage caused Palin to have wild mood swings.

"One minute, Palin would be her perky self; the next she would fall into a strange blue funk," the authors write.

The morning of her ill-fated CBS interview with Katie Couric, Palin -"her eyes glassy and dead" - was unresponsive to attempts to prep her as she was being made up.

"As they were about to set off to meet Couric, Palin announced 'I hate this makeup' - smearing it off her face, messing up her hair, complaining she looked fat," the book relates.

Palin went on to give answers to Couric that were so incoherent the interview permanently damaged her.

Palin went into a tailspin. She stopped eating or sleeping, and drank only a half a can of diet soda a day, recounts the book written by John Heilemann of New York magazine and Mark Halperin of Time magazine.

"When her aides tried to quiz her she would routinely shut down - chin on her chest, arms folded, eyes cast to the floor, speechless and motionless, lost in what those around her described as a kind of catatonic stupor," the book says.

"If I had known everything I know now, I would not have done this," the book quotes Palin as saying.

She talked often about her baby, Trig, who spent most of the time in Alaska, and some John McCain aides thought she might be suffering postpartum depression.

When the campaign took her to Arizona to prep for the veep debate, McCain's staff made sure a doctor friend was on hand "to observe her," the book says.

Palin's spokeswoman Meg Stapleton has dismissed the book's allegations as inaccurate gossip from people who weren't there.

"The governor's descriptions of these events are found in her book, 'Going Rogue.' Her descriptions are accurate," Stapleton said in a statement Sunday night to 60 Minutes." "She was there. These reporters were not."

Oh brother....guess you have to try and jump at any - story that favors her poorly

[ In Reply To ..]
And rawstory???????? Of course they would say something like that. Oh and now because the McCain camp says neg things about her that's okay by your books? When they defended her you were against them. Now that they trash her you're okay with them. Okay, I understand.

I'll stick with the psychiatrist who has found that liberalism is a mental disorder. This post proves that.

Most naysayers are just jealous of her....she is the one pulling - in the moolah and doing just FINE!!

The behavior described by McCain aides is classic mental disorder...wild mood swings, glassy dead eyes, unresponsive during prep sessions for interviews and debates, smearing the makeup off her face and messing her hair up, fearful of looking fat (body image distortion), incoherent babbling, tailspins into eating disorders, severe insomnia, going into catatonic stupors when quizzed by campaign aides, the need for her to be observed by doctors during high-profile press events, etcetera. These are reports from people who witnessed this behavior with their own eyes over an extended period of time. Sorry, call me crazy, but I'll stick with preponderance of the evidence.

I am very happy and grateful that I am not SP, that not only am I lacking the short supply of gray matter but the twisted ideologies as well. I am also happy she is a Republican and not a Dem because not only am I not jealous of her, I personally think she is a sad representation of this country. I am also glad that McCain chose her as his VP because I truly think that is what well and truly buried any possiblity of his winning the election. Even a lot of the reasonable republicans saw her for what she was and knew she was not someone who should have any real power. Jealous, no. Glad she is your problem and not ours, absolutely.
