Who cares about this? Not me. (sm)

Gee thanks for making me sick first thing this morning - Is anyone outraged?

I don't get this, I really don't. Are people okay with this? I just don't understand it. How can we be giving our tax money to something like this? It is our tax money that this article is talking about isn't it or is there some other private fund? I don't get it. We have people without jobs here and who are on food stamps and welfare. people who can't get jobs because of now work and they have no money.

Now I'm not saying anyone is to blame (political party wise). I have no idea who approved this and I don't care, I just think its wrong. Who ever approved this how can they do it? How can they in good conscious send our money to something like this? However, I have a sneaky suspicion this really isn't going to help Brazilian women stop smoking. Probably someones pocket

I just don't get it. Am I alone?

nope - sm

In answer to your question, the funding comes from the National Institutes of Health. They do not throw money around willy nilly, and researchers do not pocket the money (how ridiculous).

It's hard to get riled up over 1.5 million, when - $100 billion is spent

on corporate welfare. Twice as much as on social welfare.

And Mitt Romney had the nerve to scoff at 47% of average Americans, when corporations like his are receiving more benefits than any of us. Wasn't Bain bailed out by the government in the 90's?

Ask yourself--do oil and gas companies really *need* a tax rate of 2%? Two percent! What is your average tax rate?

That is what makes me sick. Not a measly 1.5 million spent on research.

Most of us, though, have become so jaded that we don't even get upset about it anymore. It's the government - for decades and decades, their job has been to take our money and spend it on whatever they feel like spending it on - it doesn't matter what party it is either. When we get upset and question it, we're told that we're greedy, racist, don't like kids, want old people to die, want dirty water and dirty air, etc., etc.

All you can really do anymore is laugh at things like the video of the shrimp running on the treadmill. Oh, and I have no doubt that a good chunk of that money is going to someone's pockets - there's no accountability of how the money is spent, so how would anyone ever know?

there is huge accountability with respect to NIH funds - say anything

Please! You really - think...

anyone is going to track how she spends that money in Brazil? The government doesn't even know where half the money goes in THIS country, they don't have the time or the inclination to follow what some would call a measly amount to another country.
Yes. Do you? - link

There are copious accountability benchmarks with respect to the administration of NIH funds. Your outrage is misplaced and unnecessary.

Thank you for bringing documented truth to the - board

I had a part-time gig helping someone write NIH grants for the university and local gov parks and rec in my town, and no matter the amount, there are audits, routine conference calls, live checks, and constant monitoring as well as lengthy and detailed guidelines/rules once the grant is awarded.

Anything over $500,000 is subjected to a - non-Federal audit.

And if it's under $500,000, she would still be required to submit records and also return any funds that she could not account for in spending toward her research.

Thanks Zville - you restored my faith there are good people - Is anyone outraged?

here. I guess by reading some of the responses on here leads me to believe democrats approved this gross misuse of money because they are okay with it and anyone questioning is cut down.

I think more people need to be upset about it. I don't think anyone should just accept it (not saying that you said you accept it), just talking with my family (who are admitted communists, and before anyone screams at me for using the C word, I'm not calling anyone here a communist, my family told me right out that the country would be better off under communist rule), but talking with my family they are okay with this because it was approved under their team/their lord. As long as they have their computer games and Kardassians, reality shows, and other mind altering (er numbing) gadgets and shows to keep them preoccupied and not aware of what is going on in the world they are okay.

But talking with my "politically educated" DH (meaning he understands politics so well and has talked about getting into politics himself), he said most definitely a good part of that money is going into someone's pocket and if anyone doesn't believe that then, well I've got a bridge for sale they could buy.

I think if anyone should be outraged it should be Detroit. They should give them a big WTH for this. I'm sure they could have used 1 million to get their city back up, create jobs, etc.

I have not seen the shrimp running on the treadmill though, will have to look that one up. LOL. I do, however, like the hedgehog cleaning his feet someone posted on the gab board, but it still does not take away from the seriousness of what is going on in our country.

Thanks for your post Zville. Glad I am not alone.

Here's the link for the shrimp and the story behind it - you thought the Brazilian smoking cessation was bad, this will really burn your bum :)
Wow - now that's pretty stupid. LOL - The Sarge - sm

I can't decide what is more stupid. The shrimp running on the treadmill or the 2 ninnies actually sitting there with straight faces explaining it.

Here's an idea that should be proposed to them. How about we take that $682K put it into one of the cities here to build up jobs for people who need them and let those to bozo's study shrimp running on a treadmill in their spare time and on their own dollar.

By the way, I'm the person you replied to. I wrote is anyone outraged. Glad to see I'm not alone.
reducing research to sound bites is easy - shrimp

Ridiculing research is way more fun than understanding it, and intimidating scientists is the most fun of all.

The shrimp-on-a-treadmill experiment measures how changes in water quality affect how animals perform in their environment. There is nothing foolish about investigating water quality or its impact on living things.

What IS foolish is ill-informed politicians and yellow journalists who use colorful sound bites to unnecessarily hop up their constituents.

From scientist Robert Kraut of Carnegie Mellon: "Much of the policy debate in Washington, it's all about appearances. And it's easy in sound bites to ridicule without presenting a full story."

that with our country being so far into debt, it's foolish for our government to be spending money on research - that money could come from any number of other resources. But, to each his own.
worth discussing - sm

Perhaps you're right that the government should not be spending money on research. Regardless, I'm not clear how that point of view squares with ridiculing the scientific research itself, or how it validates the specious argument that there is no accountability with respect to how the money is spent or that "a good chunk of that money is going to someone's pockets".
