Whitehouse announces ANOTHER (sm)

Posted: May 17, 2013

star-studded concert.  This has to be the most arrogant administration ever - as I read in a UK paper today, is this still the United States of America?

;

Ummm, the In Performance at the WH series - has been going on since

[ In Reply To ..]
1979, and has spanned every presidential adminstration since Jimmy Carter. It is produced by WETA, an affiliate of PBS, and is funded by Pepsi-Cola with foundation support provided by The Annenberg Foundation and the Anne Ray Charitable Trust. Funding is also provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS and public television viewers who contribute individual donations during fundraising events, pledge drives and telethons. The notion that this is somehow relative to sequester, cut-backs, cancelled tours and the like is just so much hyperbolic hot air.

So I gotta ask. Does that "arrogant" thing include Presidents Reagan, Bush Sr and Jr as well, or what?

You do know that article was from 5/17/13 (today). We are not talking about Jimmy Carter, Regan, or Bush, or Clinton.

They also did not have parties in the middle of crisis' going on as though nothing is happening.

Doesn't suprise me one bit it is funded by the Annenberg Foundation. or PBS

This has everything to do with the sequester, cut-backs, etc. It has everything to do with what is going on now (today).

No, that "arrogant" thing does not include Presidents Regan, Bush Sr., Jr. Doesn't even include Carter if you want to go back that far. They all didn't hold lavish parties while the country was in a crisis.

In all fairness - anon

If Obama only waited until we were out of crises to hold his parties he wouldn't ever have the opportunity since his first year as President.

Timeline of Whitehouse Musical Performances - nonnyme

They have been going on for a looong time. I think it is pretty cool actually. I enjoy the Kennedy Center Honors programs, too. Where else would you see Heart's rendition of Led Zep songs bringing tears to the eyes of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones?

http://www.whitehousehistory.org/whha_timelines/timelines_musical-performances.html

But that timelines doesn't show the parties to be every week - Truthhurts

Obama has one of these "concerts" just about every week or at least every month. I find it disgusting with everything that's going on.

He just doesn't seem to care about the people, the "scandals," or even leading this country to get to the bottom of all this crap. He rejuvenated his press release from the Benghazi attack in his short conference the other day.

He has his head in the clouds. He forever makes speeches and campaigns; first it was for his presidency in 2008, then democratic races in 2010, then his re-election campaign in 2012, and now the democratic races for 2014. After that, he will campaign for the next democratic president running in 2016. Do you see the pattern here???? He NEVER stopped campaigning.

I can't wait to see a real President in the WH in 2016. Don't know who's running or who will win, but hopefully it will be someone better than the present guy.

Actually it does. - Can you say "series?"

[ In Reply To ..]
In the years since 1979 with the "In Performance" series was initiated, you will notice the time line has encapsulated each administration's featured concert guests, who appear in the WH consecutively, not concurrently. A series, whether it's concerts, films, lectures, etc., typically occurs within a short time span. For example, the museum and Rice University in Houston hold a "tandem" foreign film series in the spring where they take turns showing the same feature foreign films over about 12-16 week period. They change the featured films about once every 10 days. This In-Performance series has taken the same form under each successive administration since its inception. It usually starts late winter-early spring and concludes late-spring-early summer.

It's absurd to suggest that any president, regardless of party affiliation, who attends customary WH concerts he's previously committed to attend, somehow doesn't care about the people, the "scandals" or leading the country. I suspect that's what's got you all "disgusted" here...that life goes on outside the RW media bubble where alleged scandals of their own creation come and go, fizzle out, then fade on into obscurity. Then again, some of then never even get off the ground, like this phony outrage over a time-honored tradition observed by the past presidents over the last 35 years or so.

Reagan holds record for In Performance Concerts. sm - nonnyme

I've read that Reagan holds the record for the most In Performance Concerts at 17.  But here is a link to some Reagan events.

Fall, 1982.  US sinks into worse recession since the Great Depression.

Singer Tammy Wynette singing to President Reagan during a barbecue for members of Congress on south lawn. 9/30/82.

PBS Taping "Performance in the White House Series" with Dizzy Gillespie in the East Room. 12/4/82.

Were any of these happening while the country was in crisis? - sm

The difference is they may have had performances, but none that i can remember when the country was in a crisis and while the president and crew was bankrupting the country

All dates below represent In Performance at the WH concert dates held under Reagan's watch:

11/22/81. Economy in free fall recession. Peak of the Savings and Loan crisis. Reagan signs Directive 17 authorizing CIA recruitment and support for Nicaraguan Contras.

03/28/82. Libyan oil embargo over their support for terrorists.

11/7/82. Unemployment peaked at its all-time high since the Great Depression @ 10.8%, a record Reagan still holds. I guess the concert helped GOP lick their wounds after losing 27 seats in the House to a new democratic majority.

12/4/82. One day after EPA discovered 300 times safe dioxin levels at Times Beach Missouri, resulting in an evacuation and expensive buy-out by the feds.

06/06/83. A few weeks after Beiruit embassy bombing that killed 63. One year after Israel's invasion of Lebanon, by which time the impotence of US latest diplomatic efforts was becoming painfully apparent. Conflict continued for nearly 2 decades.

09/18/83. Hurricane Alicia aftermath leaving 22 dead and $3.8 billion in damages.

12/01/83. US invasion of Grenada was earning condemnation from the UN, Britain and Canada.

10/26/86. Cold War disarmament talks between US and Russia recently broke down. Iran Contra blew up one week later after the scheme failed to secure hostage release in Lebanon.

03/08/87. One week after Reagan was rebuked by the Tower Commission over Iran Contra for his failure to control his National Security Council, forcing him to publicly confess his arms-for-hostage fail.

10/18/87. Warships en route to destroy 2 Iranian oil platforms in the Persian Gulf.

02/20/88. VP HW Bush implicated in Iran Contra. Dems voted down continued financial support for Reagan's pet Nicaraguan Contra project. Meanwhile, Lt William Higgins was kidnapped and killed while on a UN peacekeeping mission to monitor the "truce" in Lebanon.

04/24/88. Oliver North and John Poindexter indicted in Iran Contra while more strikes on Iranian oil platforms were ongoing.

I stand corrected. Honestly and truthfully I don't remember them happening during a crisis like the one we are facing now, but have to say you did a lot of research and I do thank you for that.

I still don't agree with it. I think the WH needs to put a halt on the parties, especially during this crisis the country is in, but that's my own opinion.
To be fair, wisdom of hindsight cannot yet apply to evolving - crises "like this one."
[ In Reply To ..]
What is viewed as crisis in real-time versus historical records is entirely subjective. None of the circumstances I listed in the previous post would necessarily be considered to be a crisis by some, just as others may not view any of the current developments as such. That's why it is perfectly understandable you may not remember or view any of those circumstances surrounding those dates as crises.

I respect your opinion on whether or not these performances are appropriate to the context of the state of the nation, while I strongly disagree that the country is in crisis mode. I guess it depends on where one puts their focus. The more salacious aspects of scandal week do not interest me nearly as much as the recent reports of indicators of an improving economy. I also think that the GOP is making a spectacle of itself when demonstrating the lengths they are willing to go to when avoiding the business at hand they were sent to DC to execute....in this case, the upcoming fractious vote on immigration and their ongoing intransigence on jobs, jobs, jobs. Those two measures affect my life in profoundly direct ways. IMO, their transparent shenanigans in this regard are the real scandal here, but that's just my take on it.
Gee, I wonder why Reagan wasn't IMPEACHED - sm

for all of his crimes. Oh, that's right.

Impeachment is a republican tool when they can't find anything else to dig up against a Democrat.
