This is Sanders' problem in particular, and applies to liberals more generally. Government is their hammer, and they see every problem in society as a nail that the government can and must pound into submission, or conformity.
On the other hand, we conservatives have a favorite tool, too. We could call it the "anti-hammer", although it goes by other names such as "small government", "self-regulating markets", etc. To conservatives, if government is the hammer, every problem looks like something other than a nail. We have little use for the hammer even when there are nails that need pounding.
We would build a better structure if we all could grasp the simple fact that in society we have many different tools, each of which is fitted to perform specific tasks - AND if we could grasp that using the WRONG tool is not only the surest mark of an unskilled builder, but it invariably produces bad outcomes with unstable, unsafe structures that will not withstand the test of time.
