I thought this was interesting.  I received it as an email, so am going to copy it here.  Sorry of the formatting is off.  Thought it was interesting enough to post:

This will BLOW your mind!

It's easy to dismiss individual programs that benefit non-citizens until they're put together and this picture emerges.

Someone did a lot of research to put together all of this data. Often these programs are buried within other programs making them difficult to find.

Viral Email: "Unpleasant Reality"

The following email has been widely forwarded.  Media Matters Action Network has written a response to the text below.  Please feel free to copy and paste it and send to your friends.

"UNPLEASANT REALITY"

RESPONSE

Hey guys,

Thanks for forwarding me this email. $300 billion is a lot of money, so I thought I'd look into some of what the email said about how much immigrants are costing American taxpayers. It looks like the email wasn't exactly telling you the whole truth.

I clicked on the links to see where they went. Most of them didn't even work, but the ones that did went to organizations like the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS). I was curious about what those were, so I looked them up, and - yikes. This website (http://www.splcenter.org/publications/the-nativist-lobby-three-faces-of-intolerance/cis-the-independent-think-tank) says that CIS was founded by someone who has ties to some pretty ugly racist groups. And FAIR was run by the same guy! I definitely don't want to get my facts on immigration from someone who's motivated by racism.

Anyway, despite what this email says, it turns out immigration is actually good for the economy. I found a really interesting article from the San Francisco Chronicle that explains it. This is what it says:

There's no dispute that a larger pool of workers -- whether legal or illegal -- boosts gross domestic product. More workers means more output. More people means more consumers spending money on food, rent and a range of necessities and luxuries. A better question is: How do immigrants affect the size of the economy per U.S.-born citizen? 'GDP per domestic person goes up,' said James Smith, a senior economist at the Rand think tank in Santa Monica and lead author of the National Research Council's study 'The New Americans: Economic, Demographic and Fiscal Effects of Immigration.

You can read the whole article here: http://articles.sfgate.com/2006-05-21/news/17295663_1_illegal-immigration-low-skilled-george-borjas

And it turns out that if we were to legalize low-skilled immigrant workers, it could help the economy even more. The Cato Institute, which is a pretty conservative libertarian organization, says that legalization could help the economy by $180 billion. Their full report is here:  http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=10438

It is true that immigrants -- both documented and undocumented - do benefit from government programs, just like native-born Americans. But immigrants contribute way more to the economy than they cost the government. Another Cato Institute study says that "increased economic activity created by lower-skilled, mostly Hispanic immigrants far exceeds the costs to state and local governments." In North Carolina for example, immigrants cost the state $61 million - but they also increased the state's economy by $9 billion. So on the whole, they're adding money into the economy, not costing states billions like the email claims. And did you know that a lot of undocumented immigrants even pay taxes? The Congressional Budget Office estimates that 75 percent of undocumented immigrants have taxes withheld from their paychecks or file tax returns.

That Cato study is here in case you want to look at it: http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=10658#16

And the CBO report is here: http://cbo.gov/ftpdocs/87xx/doc8711/12-6-Immigration.pdf

One of the other things the email gets wrong is about undocumented immigrants in jail. One of the things I found when I was figuring out this email is that studies indicate that foreign-born are actually less likely to be incarcerated than U.S.-born men. One study in California says that U.S.-born men are institutionalized at a rate that's ten times higher than foreign-born men. You can read that study here:  http://www.ppic.org/content/pubs/cacounts/CC_208KBCC.pdf#page=2

And the claim that immigrants are taking jobs away from Americans? Well, actually, the Immigration Policy Center says that immigration - either legal or illegal - doesn't cause high unemployment. They point out that if immigrants took jobs away from American citizen, then you'd have the highest unemployment rates where there are the highest numbers of immigrants - but that's not the case. Here's where the Immigration Policy Center explains all this: http://www.immigrationpolicy.org/just-facts/immigration-reform-and-job-growth

It's hard to check a lot of the specific numbers when the links don't work, but all of the reliable information I've found shows that whatever immigrants may cost the government, their positive effect on the economy is far greater.

I guess it's not surprising that an email that cites organizations like FAIR and CIS and that uses derogatory terms like "anchor babies" would try to convince you that immigration is a bad thing, though. It's pretty clear that their motive is to keep a certain type of person out of the United States, not to help the country or the economy.

Talk to you soon!

Beware of viral emails that distort facts, conflate truth, and abuse readers. The only thing worth investigating is the willingness on the part of some people to buy into disinformation.

I note that this viral email can be found on the website "The American Jingoist." Jingoism is not considered to be a complimentary term, and is characterized by belligerance, chauvinism, and extreme nationalism.

I will post in reply to my original post, so nobody gets the idea that I'm "picking on you".

Since ya'll didn't quite understand it. As for the last poster who insinuated I was frothing at the mouth my reply would be two words. Since you want to be talking about frothing at the mouth, that's exactly what you are doing with such excitement at the chance of being able to ridicule someone. As Michael Savage would say - like a rabid dog.

Sooo...since none of you are interested in doing any research on your own and seem to think you have something with "fact check", which is anything but factual, and I'm still amazed as to why they are still operating.

So...here ya go. Oh, and by the say, this is not reflecting on your darling honey pie Obummer. This reflects laws that are into place under congress (which includes democrats AND republicans). I know that's is a bit too much for ya'll to grasp, but it's true.

Okay, now...since ya'll don't like the points brought up at the same time, lets break it down for ya. If you read real slow you might be able to understand. If its still over your heads, then I would just move on. I'm sure there is something that Barack and Michelle Kardassians in their unreality life that you can drool over and figure out somewhat to incorporate hate and racist into a sentence.

1. If you go to the website provided it does discuss exact what is written. There is nothing false about it. It is exactly correct. You will just have to (dare I say) "read", but the facts are there and are true.

2. If you go to the website provided it does discuss exactly what is written. There is also nothing false about it. It's is a fact.

Actually I'm stopping there. Every link that is provided after the numbered statements can be verified as fact.

It does not matter what No Fact Check has to say. You can do the research yourselves, but know that's not in your nature.

You cut and paste an email, none of which was your research - & you say those who

You used 5 (five!) paragraphs to give an introduction to......nothing.

I clicked on the "website provided." Had you done the same, you would have discovered a failed link. No matter. It's easy enough to debunk these false claims without spoon-fed links.

You really need to do some research on what constitutes a fact. Y'all are starting to scare me.

You do realize, don't you, Anony, that after that particular diatribe, we all pretty much need a towel.

The trick to having civilized discourse on any subject is to leave the sarcasm unsaid in your mind and not throw it out there to inflame. Let's face it, we all have those witty comebacks we'd love to use in real life, but frankly, they are almost always destructive to any rational discourse.

Believe in what you want passionately; I have no issues with that. However, the minute there is sarcasm and name-calling, you've just lost any ground you might have made in an exchange of ideas. In fact, you've lost the battle at that point.

Lest anyone accuse me of only targeting conservatives, I feel the same way about any belief that is thrown in one's face.

The whole purpose of a multiparty system in our government should be to have checks and balances and a meeting in the middle. It's called compromise and is necessary in any relationship, from the personal all the way up to political. Sadly, that has gone horribly awry in this country. I blame the "rabidness" of the past few years on the superpacs and the lies and hatred they have spewed out, and BOTH SIDES are at fault for this.

As an independent, I'm willing to listen to anyone's point of view or even posing a question that is in their mind about which they wish to have a civil discussion. It's how we learn.

If you wish me to actually hear what you are saying and even consider your point of view, you will get rid of the name-calling and sarcasm. They have no place in discussions between mature adults.
