Lincoln

Posted: Dec 4, 2012

Saw the movie "Lincoln" yesterday.  If it was true to history, what an awesome man he was!  Too bad we no longer have leaders like him any more.  Actually, the Republican party used to be awesome, a lot of great men belonged to it back in the day.  What has happened to them?  There are nothing but idiots in our government now.  So sad.

because all the "rules" were changed to - benefit only the govt and

not the "people." The "people" do not matter now, except to provide the money the govt uses for itself and its own. I wish we could have Lincoln back too. Bet he is spinning in his grave seeing what all his hard work has come to. Now there was an honorable man! Present company could not even stand in his shadow.

Well, if Lincoln were alive today, no one would know - he had greatness in him, just as

all our leaders today are presented to one side or another, or both, as buffoons who couldn't shoot themselves in the foot with a gun in each hand.

On the plus side, no one thought Lincoln was all that great in his day. Truman was widely believed, as reported by the "greatest" journalists of his day, sadly incompetent and wholly inadequate to his job. Today most historians consider him worthy of at least a profile, as I heard some describe, on Mt. Rushmore.

As for Republicans, nobody can declare Lincoln specifically liberal or conservative--he was very pragmatic and liked whatever solutions worked for a situation--but the Republican party was brand-new back then and was not a party for conservatives. It was an alternative for people who didn't share the ideology of predator bankers and railroad magnates, Southern plantation owners, etc. As for today's GOP, it's fine with railroad magnates and white supremicists but would ride Lincoln out of town on a rail.

As for great Republicans, they're around, of course. Hundreds of millions of people have some real greats, lots of them. Lately they've been mostly unwilling to attempt leadership over a party that's been eating and ousting all its better, more reasonable people in favor of the likes of tea party extremists, Grover Norquist pubs, etc.

Very. very, very well said (NM) - bootstraps
