Fundraising “listen and learn” leap across the pond is off

Posted: Jul 25, 2012

The Romney camp is in defense and denial mode over a comment made by one of his aides that is being reported in UK’s Daily Telegraph. According to the Telegraph, the adviser suggested that President Obama could not understand the depth of the relationship between the two countries because he cannot fully appreciate the "special" shared "Anglo-Saxon heritage."  Whoops!

"We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special," the adviser said of Romney.  Yep.  You read right.  That's "special" x2.  According to the Telegraph: "The White House didn't fully appreciate the shared history we have." They went on to say the adviser spoke anonymously because he was not authorized by the Romney campaign to criticize Mr. Obama to foreign media.

Andrea Saul, Romney's press secretary, disputed the comments saying they did not reflect Romney’s beliefs, but was unable to articulate specifically what was not true.  In response to the report, VP Joe Biden said, "Despite his promises that politics stops at the water's edge, Governor Romney's wheels hadn't even touched down in London before his advisors were reportedly playing politics with international diplomacy.  This assertion is beneath a presidential campaign."

It gets better.  Another anonymous aide, who is a member of Romney’s foreign policy advisory team, accused Mr. Obama of being "a left-winger" who is "very comfortable with American decline."  When asked to specify how policy toward the U.K. would differ under Romney, "the advisers could not give detailed examples," according to the Telegraph. One of the FP advisors agreed there is a European crisis, but when pressed on Romney policy, said, “I'm not sure what our policy response is."

What???  Foreign policy advisors, who knew well in advance they would be going to London, do not know what their foreign policy response is about the European debt crisis, but are able to leave the impression that Romney is an arrogant bigot with an inside track on the “special” Anglo-Saxon heritage?  This is coming from the camp of the candidate who knows better than Obama how to fix the economy?

This must be what they meant by “listen and learn."  The deja vu is so ironic when contemplating how reminiscent this is of Palin’s crash course in foreign affairs last time around.  We all know how well that worked out.

Is this a joke? Did he really say such a stupid thing?

That aide should be fired.

I take anything from the news media with a grain of salt. You know how they like to sensationalize everything. I.e.: Brian Ross @ ABC comes to mind as most recent example. Or, maybe he was "taken out of context," the excuse Pres. O. used yesterday.

Sure CBS will, quick to pull the trigger - Aim later, dam any truth

They are more like the Comedy Broadcasting Stooges than anything else. But you will not see 1 single lib on here post the ENTIRE quote, interview, video, etc...they never do. If not for taking material out of context, they have no material.

You would have to take up the issue of quotes with the reporting entity - The Telegraph (UK). CBS did more than just regurgitate quotes - they provided the candidate a chance to respond; I would think you would be in favor of that.

If you have further concerns, please refer to this recent conservative-based post: "If you read something on this board, instead of challenging a poster asking them to post links, why don't you open a Google and type it in and do some research."

Report's from Telegraph, not CBS. When you go looking - for the context that's

going to kiss the boo-boo and make it all better, be sure to begin your search in the right place. Somehow, I think that "grain of salt" line of defense isn't going to do a thing to put this fire out. Like Biden said, the plane has barely touched down, so I'm with you. Let's give it some time and see where this all takes us. It's going to be a very long week for Romney and camp, if this is any indication.

Mitt is trying to run his campaign on his alleged business successes. Most presidents and CEOs of successful enterprises begin structuring their undertakings by assembling a top-notch team of surrogates, dontcha think? If this were a pop quiz in school, what sort of grade do you think the teacher would give him on this exercise?

The GOPs "you didn't built that" smear campaign relies heavily on misrepresenting messages in order to create their desired pubic impressions. They seem to believe that perception is EVERYTHING and that it trumps truth every time. Though this giant gaffezilla speaks for itself and needs no doctoring, the GOP is right on when it comes to perceptions. Good luck with coaxing that cat back into the bag. You're gonna need it.

nor does CBS call the shots on what the Telegraph reports. Source assassination never has been very effective in making reality disappear and it cannot rewrite history. BTW, in their attack on Biden's comments, the Romney campaign ended up shooting themselves in the other foot by referring to the Telegraph as a FOREIGN newspaper. It would do them well to remember that they are in London now, not Kansas, and that their expressed "mission" is to show the world what a DIPLOMATIC STATESMAN Romney is. ROFLMAO.

It is downright absurd that foreign policy advisor surrogates would be THAT ill prepared to answer even the most rudimentary questions about foreign policy. Judging from this performance and its bristling aftermath, one might logically conclude that the foreign policy "listen and learn" tour is nothing more than a transparent cover story for a straight-up expat fundraising trip. That concept is very much in line with the Romney mindset...that no amount of money will ever be enough, whether it be in the course of profiting from shuttering flailing businesses, laying off workers and sending their jobs overseas, or while in the midst of trying to buy the presidential election.

Of note, this was not just one aide who got caught with their feet in their mouths. Imagine that. Also, how do you explain Romney Press Secretary Andrea Saul's deer-in-the-headlights response? Did media bias plant those "duhs" in her mouth when she was unable to specify how the aides' statements weren't true?

I think CBS wrote (to drag out an overworn Fox phrase) a "fair and balanced" report with enough criticism to go around of both parties and their respective spokespersons. That said, it was the aides who came off as the undisputed dummies of the day. I am truly looking forward to following the rest of this trip and plan to be watching the reports coming out of Reuters and the Telegraph with great interest, since those two outlets are not likely to benefit from favoring one US political party or the other.

Bias doesn't pull words out of thin air and stuff them - into camp aides' mouths - Thanks for the jollies

As a matter of fair play, CBS contacted the Romney campaign for comment on this story reported by The Telegraph. They gave him a voice and reported the campaign's rebuttal. That's a nice and fair thing to do.

Campaign Fundraising In Other CountriesJul 15, 2012
What do you think of fundraising and receiving money from other countries?  I thought it was illegal, but I guess not.  If citizens of other countries can donate money to whoever they want to here, do you think they should be allowed to vote in our elections? Didn't the Clintons catch flack from receiving money from other countries?  It was so long ago I might be wrong, but I thought they did. The pattern continues… Those who are connected to the crimes and misdemeanors of the Clinton cartel live in hiding for fear of their lives. Of course there was funneling of money going on. The Wikileaks and Guccifer 2.0 hacks went along way in documenting the quid pro quo nature of Clinton diplomacy. Back in the 90s, it was selling nuclear secrets to China, and schmoozing with high powered Chinese individuals, caught up in real estate deals, fundraising schemes and the like. So it is ...
