New Diabetic - sm

Posted: Jun 4, 2010

To all MT/MDs...help.  Just found out I have type 2 diabetes.  Any sites where I can go to learn more about it with perhaps some diet to follow?  Doctor just sent a note saying I needed to start oral medication - didn't say what - and that's it!! No instructions, nada.  Any help/advice appreciated. Point me in the right direction as it looks likel I have to educate myself.  I don't do Acute Care (radiology) so this stuff is all Greek to me!!

I typed in type 2 diabetes recipes into google and there were many hits.

Also type in type 2 diabetes in google and you could be there all day looking at different sites.

Try the local dietician at your hospital, they definitely have lots of information.

Thanks, I did that, and that's why I asked for advice on a GOOD site. Just thought if anyone knew of one they could share.

Stay away from dieticians/nutritionists...sm - Betty Boop

They are about as clueless as they come, as are most medical personnel when it comes to diabetes. My advise...buy either of these 2 books...Eat to Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman or the McDougall Plan by Dr. John McDougall. Four years ago, my husband had surgery and, while in the hospital, they decided he was diabetic. I told them he wasn't because he never had high blood sugar before. The surgeon and a dietician wanted him on their stupid diets which make diabetes even worse (insulin will also make you fatter and sicker). Eat as close to natural as you can-- fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds. Stay away from meat, dairy, processed foods and sugar. Your diabetes will disappear. I guarantee it. My husband still doesn't have it. This is the diet intended for humans. Eat this way and stay healthy...or not...your choice. :)

Certainly, there is no one size fits all plan with regard to control of diabetes with diet.

I tried the vegetarian plan. In fact, I collected several books by Dr. McDougall and a cookbook that I think was compiled by his wife. Unfortunately, my blood sugar gets really high when I eat fruit and beans.

I found that I had to adopt a low-carb plan in order to get my diabetes and weight under control.

After 50 years of listening and following advice by doctors and dieticians, I finally realized that they were not a good source of information. MDs and most dieticians are trained by the same programs, often university programs that teach the pharmaceutical theory of healthcare. These medical professionals also often assume that a patient has no willpower or ability to follow a healthy dietary regimen and must rely on pills.

Regarding medications, I agree; do whatever you can to stay away from insulin and oral medications for blood sugar control. They can keep you diabetic and make you sicker.

Are you overweight? - sm

If so,you gotta lose it and THEN you more than likely won't have DM anymore. I was overweight and developed it as well and I didn't want to get on medication. I cut out all sugar, white foods and started exercising right after meals in order to lower my blood sugar and I have lost 110 pounds, have 10 more to go and not even a trace of diabetes:) I am also a certified diabetes educator, so I already new that my weight gain and lifestyle and family history were going to cause me to get diabetes, but it took actually hearing the doctor say it to make me change my life. I feel great now though and you can to:)

Diabetic Cat?Oct 18, 2012
I am wondering what I should do for my cat.  She is 17 and I think she might have diabetes.  She is hungry all the time, overweight, has problems with her balance, not very active at all.  Problem is, I don't know if I can afford to deal with the diabetes, tests, insulin shots or if it is even worth it to put her through that.  I am dealing with the loss of my other 17yr cat about 6 weeks ago still and it breaks my heart to lose this one too, but I just don't know i ...

Diabetic Neuropathy Help ASAP Please?Jun 12, 2010
I am terrified...I have steroid-induced DM and have just been on insulin for about a week.  Yesterday morning I woke up nearly paralyzed in pain from my knee area down.  The pain was so intense at first I didn't even realize where it started from and had to figure it out.  My feet, thighs, knees, calves, etc., was in the most twisting, squeezing, burning pain I've ever experienced.  I took an OxyContin plus 2 Norcos and it still didn't subside for at least 2 h ...
