My mammogram

Posted: Nov 15, 2010

I am the one who posted the initial comment about having a painful mammogram.  About an hour ago I got a call from the imaging center asking me to return for more views of my left breast.  The woman said the doctor "saw something" and would like various views and possible ultrasound.  I know many of you have probably been asked to return, but I am feeling afraid.  I have not had a mammogram for several years, and now I am kicking myself for it.  I am going next Monday, as I want a week off caffeine to possibly make the test less painful.

I had to return, also - anon

I had my first mammogram at 40, and got the call that the doctor "found something" in my right breast. When the second set came back, they did find something, and I was sent for an ultrasound. I have a fluid filled cyst that is benign. I returned every 6 months for 2 years, and now go once a year, with an ultrasound every few years to track it. So far, so good, it hasn't grown or changed shape in nearly 15 years. I never miss the mammo no matter how bad it hurts, and I bother the hell out of all my friends and family to get theirs done. Praying for you, let us know how things work out.

I could feel a lump - long time CMA

before I had one of my mammograms and they marked it and did the mammogram. The place I go, they always look at the films before you leave, so if the doctor wants additional views and/or ultrasound they can be done that day. The doctor did go ahead and do an ultrasound that day and the ultrasound looked normal but she also did a breast exam, wanting to know where the lump was. It is strainge because when I lay down, you can not feel it but when I sit up you can. She ordered an MRI just to be on the safe side as she did not see anything wrong on the mammogram but said that she definitely felt it. The MRI was fine. They think that it could be caused by my thyroid meds since I take natural hormones, not synthetic ones for the thyroid, as I am allergic to the synthetic. I know most of the time, it is nothing, just some calcification in the breast, but it is good that you have had the screening and good you are following up, as early detection is the best prevention. Will be praying for you, let us know how you do!

My "something" was a lymph node...sm - Yep, me too

I had to go back for a mammo every 3 months x3. The thing never changed, so I am back on an annual schedule. As for the pain, if you are still in the child-bearing ages, try going 2 weeks after your period. This works for me. A technician once told me to stay away a week before and after, because that is when we tend to be most sensitive.

Good luck. I'm sending positive vibes your way!

My something was a vascular malformation. - sm

In the last few weeks, I have had to go back for additional mammography views, an ultrasound, and a breast MRI. Turns out it was a vascular malformation that I had seen on my chest for years. It was a small blue lump that I assumed was a varicose vein, but it showed up on my mammogram as a 14.3-mm nodule with irregular borders. The technician that did the repeat mammogram and ultrasound noticed it and marked it with a sticker before doing the imaging studies. I had an excisional biopsy done last week that confirmed that it was a benign hemangioma.

I do have a very strong family history of breast cancer (mother, sister, and maternal aunt), so I am now under close surveillance with alternating mammograms and breast MRIs every 6 months.

Hoping yours turns out to be something benign, too. Sending positive thoughts and prayers your way!

Thanks, everyone - Anxious

Painful MammogramNov 12, 2010
I had a mammogram a few days ago which was very painful.  The tech asked if I had a high caffeine intake, which unfortunately I do.  She said this can make the test more painful.  I saw on line that if you reduce or eliminate the caffeine intake about a week prior to the test it will help.  I must say it was painful enough to perhaps make me avoid going back next year.  It has been some years since I have had a mammography.  I am glad I went, but it was not a p ...
