Inguinal hernia

Posted: Oct 29, 2009

Anyone have a husband or sig other that has an asymptomatic inguinal hernia that chose observation over surgery and how did it work out or chose surgery with the open procedure rather than a lap.  Just curious how other people have done with this situation.

My husband had double inguinal surgery two years ago. The procedure itself went well, and he wasn't out of work very long. He said it was painful though. He said it must have felt like I did when I had my C-sections. But, not to scare you, since I'm sure he's the exception, but he did develop a severe infection and had to be reopened up in emergency surgery. They had to keep the wound on one side open and it was nasty. He's fine now, though and everything is okay with no problems at all.

My ex-husband has had a severe inguinal hernia for many, many years and has not had it looked at or considered surgery because of insurance reasons. He has not had any problems with it other than occasionally it will hurt but who knows with him. He's one of those people who wont acknowlege pain unless his arm has been chopped off. He obviously hasn't ended up in the ER yet and he's a new construction plumber doing hard physical labor all day. I suspect eventually it might cause him a problem but for the past 10 years or so he's just lived with it.

Had an inguinal hernia, had difficulty walking, had to lie flat at times. Painful with exertion. Primary care said to "wear a girdle" which was stupid remark as it could have become strangulated. Gyn doc referred me to vascular surgeon. Had an open mesh hernia repair, was painful afterwards for awhile but surgery itself went well except wound healing was slow. Had a sensation of pulling in that area for a few months. On the whole, I was glad I had the surgery as not having it puts you in danger of having it become strangulated if not corrected and could result in a more serious problem. I would have it repaired by a reputable surgeon. I am glad I had the open although it was more painful than the scope and recovery is longer. I had adhesions from previous abdominal surgery so open was better for me. It's a tough decision but glad I had it done.

Hernia QuestionJul 01, 2014
I believe I have an incisional hernia.  I had a C-section 16 years ago and have been living with a pain in that area for about 10 years.  It recently has become more severe and worrisome.   My question is, how can you tell if you have strangulated hernia or your bowels are becoming necrotic from it?  Do you have to have a colostomy bag if that horrible thing happens? I am scared to death.  I have made an apt. with the doctor but will be a while before i actuall ...
