This is not a health issue question, but I was just wondering how many of you have had gastric bypass and what was your experience like? TIA!
;Hi Samantha,
I had a gastric bypass (Roux en Y) in Jan. 2003. I weighed 350 pounds. I lost 20 pounds before the surgery. I started on pureed foods to get used to eating again, then gradually went to soft foods then to solid foods. The transition for me was a learning experience as I had to relearn how to eat. The things I loved before surgery changed after surgery. I could no longer eat the former things even those that were not considered bad for you. My tastes changed and the things I loved before surgery I did not care for after surgery. I could no longer eat a regular full-sized meal. I broke it down into small snacks; then as time progressed a little larger portion. There are supplements and protein that must be taken in daily - everyday. Since meat is celluose, the new stomach cannot process this, so most people go to protein powder or drinks, which I find are not so tasty. I get lab work done on a regular basis to make sure I have a balance of minerals and required elements as the new stomach after surgery cannot retain certain vitamins - they must be replaced daily. I hit a snag early on in the learning process and got down to 103 pounds - I improperly ate something which caused me not to eat or take any fluids for over a week. That put me in the ER to get rehydrated - not pleasant. It's been about 10 years or so and I have stabilized to 130-135 pounds. As a result of the massive weight loss, there is excess skin - it hangs under my arms and I have an abdominal flap that hangs down causing everything down there to sag. The weight loss is wonderful and I believe I'm in a healthier place because of it. I do not regret having the surgery, it has gotten me to the goal I used to just dream of. Now it's a reality. This is a lifestyle change in all respects. It is what is and I'm living it everyday. I make the best of it and take care of myself. Hope this helps :)
