E-Smokes

Posted: Jul 17, 2010

This was touched on very briefly in an earlier post, but is there anyone here who has either completely quit or dramatically reduced their tobacco use with one of the E-smokes?  Which brand did you try?  Were there any you didn't like and why? Did it take some getting used to or was it 'good' from the beginning?  The majority of complaints seemed to be they were thick, and since I smoke VA Slims now, I may have a bit of an adjustment problem with that.

I have done a little on-line research and something called SafeCig seems to have the best reviews posted on its site as far as quality of the product itself (battery, vaporizer, etc.), but I don't necessarily trust the reviews the manufacturer is willing to post on its site.

Finally, after whatever amount of time, do you notice an improvement in your lung function?  Do you miss real tobacco or does that satisfy that need completely?

Thanks!!

e-cigarettes - FG

I have been using e-cigarettes for a little over a year now. I smoked from the age of 12 until I was 46...34 years. Yikes! It took me a few months to completely give up regular cigarettes, others say they never smoked a regular cigarette from the time they picked up the e-cigarette. I cut down on the amount of regular cigarettes I smoked per day by using the e-cigarette until I was smoking about five cigarettes a day. Then one day I decided I did not want to spend a rediculous $6.49 a pack to kill myself anymore and I would try to go without the regular cigarettes and I didn't miss them. I smoked my last regular cigarette on Thanksgiving morning 2009. It's almost 8 months now. That is a record for me in all the years I have smoked and all the times I tried to quit. I do not miss regular tobacco cigarettes at all. From the beginning, after a few hours of smoking the e-cigarette rather than a regular cigarette, the regular cigarettes tasted awful. There was just something in ME that rebelled about giving them up for the first few months. You may be different. Most people say they were able to quit regular cigs the first day or within the first week.

I do feel better. My chest feels lighter. I can breathe better and my sense of smell is much improved.

I went to SafeCig's website. They are very over priced. You can get a starter kit for half that price. There are a lot of great vendors with much better prices. Check out http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/. It is a large community of e-smokers. There are reviews of different e-cigs and vendors. You will be better informed to choose what type of e-cig you want and you can read customer reviews of different devices and vendors there.

You can also e-mail me and I would be glad to answer any other questions you have. I can also recommend the vendors I have found to be the best. Good Luck!

BTW....I also smoked Virginia Slims. (120's) They are thin, but an e-cig is no thicker than a regular cigarette.

I don't know for sure if it went through or not because after I hit send, it went through the motions and then popped up a message that it was updating the site and to see the page I wanted to click the links to the left (the forum lists).

If you don't get it, let me know and I'll try again later or figure something else out.

Frankly, a lot of it confused me. But I think I gleaned that a lot of people liked one called Joye eGo. It happened to have the starter kit on sale on another web site for $50+shipping which included two of everything. I'm not real clear on how to use it and just got one thing of juice. I wasn't feeling adventurous enough to try the mochas, bananas, or lemon zest. I've got my fingers crossed that it does the trick where Chantix and Wellbutrin and willpower failed.
I just ordered a kit too - Triscuit

I ordered Firelight. Great reviews and only $49 for double everything. Plus it has 3 rechargers, USB, car, and wall.

If you google "utube ecig" they have a ton of videos that describe how they work (some better than others).
We'll have to keep each other posted, Triscuit. - sm

I think a lot of my smoking is true habit, although after 30+ years of it, I'm sure there is a degree of addiction there. Hopefully sucking 'vape' will satisfy the hand-to-mouth-inhale part of it which you can't get from gum or patch. Did you get any of the fancy flavors or are you, like me, going purist first?

Up until 06/30 I've been ordering cigs from the Native American (Indian)Nations for $22/carton. O'Bama passed a law that after 06/30 they could no longer ship cigarettes. I stock-piled, but when they run out I refuse to pay $55. The e-cigs Have to work!

kabosh to that and the company had to hand over everyone who ordered from them from the state, then the state sent me a cigarette tax useage form to pay up.

I've got everyone beat here. Tried everything but Chantix and Wellbutrin. Herb supplements, the patch, other stop smoking aids, and even hypnosis. Longest ever stopped was 3 weeks when the patch irritated my arm and couldn't use it anymore.

I've been smoking for 50 years. I heard of these e-cigs but never tried them. I may do that.
Trying e-cigs - fg

Oh, I tried hypnosis too with "laser" therapy. It cost over $250 for my son and me. After about an hour, we were ready to rip each other̢۪s heads off and we continued to smoke. It is an awful addiction. Nonsmokers cannot understand the grip it has on a smoker. I have tried everything except for Chantix. The five minutes of warnings at the end of the commercial were enough to scare me off. My doctor gave me a prescription for it, but I never filled it. I was optimistic e-cigs would work for me because I would still be able to hold something like a cigarette and inhale/exhale smoke. (vapor) I had used the Nicorette inhaler previously and quit for 4 months with it, which was the longest I had ever quit prior to finding the e-cig. At that time, I was pretty motivated. I was going on a trip with a bunch of girlfriends that were nonsmokers and I did not want to be the only smoker in the bunch. Besides the hand to mouth motion of using the inhaler, there was no vapor and it tasted like what I imagine inhaling insulation would taste like. All and all I was miserable for those four months. I bought a pack of cigarettes on my way home from the airport after my trip and it was as if I had never stopped smoking. Since I started using e-cigs, after a while, regular cigarettes start tasting nasty. E-cigs taste good. (Trust me; I never thought that "I" would get there!) Now I cannot imagine ever smoking a cigarette again. It truly amazes me because I thought I would smoke for the rest of my life. I never thought cigarettes would disgust me! I may vape for years or forever, but who cares? I am only getting nicotine in the vapor, not the harmful chemicals and poisons found in cigarettes and I can slowly wean myself off the nicotine while still maintaining the habit. There are many ex-smokers that now vape zero nicotine juice. I find now that when I am busy, I do not think about vaping. That did not happen with cigarettes, so I know I am less addicted to nicotine now. I can go out to dinner or a movie and not get a craving for a cigarette after a half an hour. Even if you only cut back on your cigarette smoking at first, you will not be out any money because you will quickly save the dollars spent on a kit. I do not know what they cost in your area, but here in FL it cost over $60 for a carton the last time I bought one in November. I probably spent over $300 a month on cigarettes before. (A car payment for Pete's sake!) I smoked for 34 years...I don't know how many times I tried to quit smoking....I got ugly just thinking about it. People would beg me to buy cigarettes. LOL. This has to be the most painless way to give up cigarettes for yourself and the people around you. If you are on the fence about trying e-cigarettes you can get a disposable e-cig kit to try for $8.99 to try here http://www.madvapes.com/. I̢۪m sure there are other websites that have them too. I sound like a salesperson. I̢۪m not I promise! I just want people to know that if you have tried everything else to quit and failed, e-cigs are definitely worth a try!
I've been a total freak out when I tried to quit - Backwards Typist

The last time I tried cold turkey, I lasted 3 hours! I was so nasty, DH left. He came back 15 minutes later with a carton for me.

I just can't afford to keep going. I started when cigarettes were $.25 a pack. I'm now up to $400 a month at 2 cartons a week at $50 a carton. DH buys my cigarettes for me and then I pay him back when I have the money. He understands since he was a 3-pack a day smoker since he was 8 years old (working in a bootleg coal hole will do that to ya). Anyway, he threw his cigarettes away 16 years ago and hasn't touched one since. Lucky for him.

When I worked outside the home, I smoked half a pack a day. Now that I'm totally home, I noticed I smoke 4 per hour, well, they usually burn away while I'm working. I light up when I driving and in a 10 minute ride, I smoke 2 cigarettes. I know it just a habit, but it's too hard to break.

I just spent the last couple hours on the Alt smoke site. For some reason, everything loaded so slow, so I finally gave up. I figured I would need the price of 3 cartons to get started. I tried to find out how to pay for the items, but got frustrated and closed it.

At least I have one thing going for me. When I was in the ER a couple weeks ago for an injury, my pulse ox was 100%. I was happy about that but I want to get off them once and for all.

I sent you an e-mail. Let me know if you do not get it. (It seems to be working now?)

LOL at your hubby bringing you home a carton! That is pretty much the reaction I have have gotten. That will not happen with e-cigs. You won't be going through withdrawal. I totally understand about the cost. I was supporting my habit and my son's. I also noticed how much more I smoked when I was home. One of the good things about e-cigs is they do not burn away when you set them down!

Can you ladies keep us posted on how the eCigs work? - Cant wait to see if they work

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been debating on trying these but I'm afraid it won't be anywhere as easy as I'm anticipating and I'll just be tossing $50 down the drain. I've been smoking since I was 12 (30 years), so I think we're in similar boats, so to speak.

Anyway, if you could update this thread or start a new one after you get everything and let us know how it's going, I for one would REALLY appreciate it.

TIA!!!

Do E-cigs work? - FG

I am really happy to see you guys are going to try the e-cig! OP - You made an excellent choice! I do not have an EGO, but I have read nothing but good reviews about them. (I actually want to buy one eventually) They have a really long battery life.

For anyone wondering if e-cigs work, here is a link to a thread on the ECF forum. There is 435 posts from people that have quit smoking using e-cigs. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/quitting/7459-has-anyone-quit-real-smoking.html

I have to say....I think they work. I smoked for over 30 years. I tried the patch, the gum, wellbutrin, and nicorette inhalers. The longest I ever gave up cigarettes before this was for 4 months with the nicorette inhaler, but I was miserable the whole time! I have never felt like I was quiting with the e-cig. It did take me a few months to completely quit real cigs, but I think I am the exception rather than the rule. I did cut down from two packs a day to a half a pack a day immediately. Then to 5 cigs a day for months. Then I quit. It was painless. I no longer crave real cigs and I can be around smokers and it does not bother me. I can vape (it is vapor not smoke) in my house and there is no smell or second hand smoke to bother others and I no longer smell like a smoker.

I know the forums can be confusing, but there is a lot to learn there from other e-cig users and the best advise you are going to get is from others that have tried the products.

If you order a kit, you probably would want to order some eliquid too so you can refill your cartridges. My favorite vendor for juice is http://www.liquidxpress.com. I vape Mr. Bean (coffee flavor) mostly, but there are dozens of flavors. Again, I would read the reviews of juices to find the best vendors.

Here is a list of vendors that I have been happy with for supplies:
www.altsmoke.com
www.thehouseofvapor.com
www.myvaporstore.com
www.awesomevapor.com
www.cigeasy.com
www.nhaler.com

There are lots of great vendors. Most are represented on the forums and you can read the reviews on them. Just do not spend over $50 for a kit! There are vendors in the mall that sell these kits for over $100 and then they want you to buy their overpriced cartridges rather than refilling them. E-cigs should cost you MUCH less than regular cigarettes if you find the best vendors to deal with.

I hope you guys keep me updated. If the e-mail issue gets fixed feel free to e-mail me. Good Luck!!!

So you can get the liquid from vendors other than where you bought the kit?
eliquid - FG
[ In Reply To ..]
Yes. You can buy eliquid from any of the e-cig stores. My favorite is liquidxpress.com, but I have purchased liquid from many other stores. I started off with Marlboro 24 mg. It is probably best to start off with something that most simulates smoking. Now, I like the coffee and cappucino flavors in 18 mg. (Eventually, I will lower the mg again until I am vaping just flavoring without any nicotine.) My son (23) quit smoking cigarettes at the same time as me. He likes the tobacco and menthol flavors. The fruity flavors are...interesting, but not something I could vape all day, but other people love them. Your best bet is to buy the smallest quantity as possible while you are trying different juices. There is a thread on the forum with reviews you can look at too.
