Clicking in ear

Posted: Oct 25, 2010

This is a strange question, but has anyone ever noticed a clicking sound in your ear?  It is like listening to a wristwatch.  It is not constant, but when it starts it does it for usually several minutes, quits and then starts again.   I have no ear pain whatsoever, nothing moving around in there!  It is just in the right ear.  It started about two weeks ago, off and on.  Thanks.

I just wiggle my jaw and it stops. I keep forgetting to ask the doctor because it goes away so quickly but I think while working I may be keeping my jaw tightened for some reason.

could be TMJ - cll

With TMJ you can have clicking from your jaw that you hear in your ear. If you hear the clicking when you clench your jaw, move your jaw or open your mouth, this might be it. I have it occasionally but my bigger problem is that I have constant ringing in my ears and have it for years. It really drives me crazy and I notice that I am asking people 'What did you say?' more frequently now. I am only 45, can not image how bad this will be when I get older! Good luck.

Thanks for the replies - Christine

I never thought about TMJ causing the problem. I do, in fact, have TMJ and grind my teeth at night. It would certainly explain why the clicking is not constant. I always dread going to the dentist because of problems keeping my mouth open due to jaw pain and cervical arthritis. Thanks again to you both.

What treatment have you had for TMJ. My dentist thinks I have that and I can not tolerate the night guard he made for me. I had to call around to all of the oral surgeons that were partcipating in my insurance and out of those 25 I only found one that will even treat TMJ. I can not take anti-inflammatories because of severe reflux with erosive gastritis, gastroparesis, IBS and previous ulcer. I went in and asked for a cortisone injection and he refused to do it. I have to get an MRI of the TMJ as the oral surgeon is not convinced that I have TMJ, but with all my symptoms, I really think that is what I have and am at a loss on how to treat this. Just wondering how yours is treated.

You have just described my experience as well. I cannot tolerate most meds, and like you, the NSAIDs cause stomach problems. I have severe reflux as well. I have no dental insurance and have DJD of the entire spine. I take Xanax, which thankfully I can tolerate. This helps some in that it helps me rest a little better. I had one dentist who became angry when I could not keep my mouth open wide for a very lengthy procedure. When he got to know me after a few visits he would allow me to rest several times during the procedure. One day he actually turned the light out and left the room just to allow me to rest and relax before finishing the procedure. I deal with it on a daily basis, and of course some days are better than others. I wish you luck.
