wood floors fascination

Posted: May 23, 2011

What is the fascination with wood floors? It seems to be a trend but not for me . I grew up in houses with wood floors . They are cold , drafty ( I lived in old houses) need special care . We have carpeting in the livingroom , diningroom , familyroom & 2 bedrooms.

and need to be shampooed at least once a month to keep them halfway clean.

I got turned off by carpet when I first got a Hoover steam cleaner. We had a small house and a toddler, so I could clean the carpet often. The water from the cleaner was BLACK, even though I was cleaning it regularly.

I have allergies, and they have gotten much better since I moved into this house with 90% wood and tile. We now only have carpet in the bedrooms, and it's cleaned regularly. But my wish is to replace the carpet there with wood someday soon.

My allergies are much better since we now have no carpeting and no heavy drapes. They're just dust collectors. I have all-tile floot, but I live in FL where the floors don't generally get cold.

You could compromise and go part wood or tile, with large area rugs.

our house has very small rooms and by putting wood floors down in 2 or 3 of them made the rooms seem bigger.

Solid floors are so much cleaner - A Fan

I hate carpet and love wood floors. Almost any solid surface floor is better and cleaner than carpet IMHO. Tile is nice too (have it in the bathrooms and laundry room and love it) although harder on the body standing long periods of time (cooking, doing dishes) and dishes break into a million pieces on tile. Wood floors give a warm glow to a room, are easier to clean and last eons longer than carpet.

Radiant floor heating makes them a lot more comfortable. I also like the roomier, brighter feel it gives compared to carpeting.

If there was a comfy furniture covering that didn't collect pet hair, I'd be all over it.

I've never bothered to take extra special care of them. But then I like the whole wabi-sabi concept of appreciating imperfect things.

Not a fan of wood floors either - just me

I don't get it either. I thought it was just me. I have a Rainbow and it does a great job cleaning. I have a problem with allergies too, but not enough to give up my cozy wall-to-wall carpeting. Just a matter of preference is all it is IMHO.

I agree that W-T-W carpet gets nasty... - and has to be ripped out

and changed sooner or later. Would much rather have nice wood or laminate or tile floors (for bath and kitchen) and dress them up with an area rug which can be changed out or professionally cleaned as needed.

Love my wood floors. - Rainy

So much easier running a dry mop over the floor than bringing out the vacuum every time. But know what you mean about them being colder (which is a plus in the summer!). I have area rugs down and can change them out when they get too icky, or when I decide to change the color scheme yet again.

I'll be moving in a couple months, from a house with hardwood floors and carpet, to a new house where I've elected to have vinyl "fake hardwood" due to aging dogs who are becoming less housebroken the older they get. What's the best way to take care of vinyl? My only experience with it is the linoleum I have in my current kitchen, which needs waxing, and I understand the newer stuff is much easier to take care of. ...
