Possible Relocation

Posted: Dec 6, 2011

Anyone out there live in the Charlotte NC area? My husband and I are working on a rough-sketch of our 3-5 year plan, and we'd really like to leave our current state.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me some about the area? I've done some research, but have only gotten so far. Are there lots of family things to do? Is the city easy to navigate? Could I take my kids to a museum and not spend 90 on the expressway in traffic or $100 just for admission? How are the schools? Are there any things to watch out for? Is the community more homey/comfy than Raleigh?

Granted, based on our job situations down the line, this whole thing could be moot--but it's fun to think about in the meantime!

Thanks much!

I go through Charlotte a lot with my travels. Their traffic is horrible...right up there with Atlanta.

Will you already have jobs when you move? Have you figured out how much it will cost you to move? I moved recently and to do it myself was well over $4000. Movers charge a whole lot more, of course.

That being said, I think the Lake Norman area (I think that's what it's called) is beautiful, but it also looks very expensive. I love North Carolina. I think it's a beautiful state, but I know nothing about their cost of living. It is nice to dream, isn't it?

the kind of money we make, she couldn't afford to live near Lake Norman. That is where many of the wealthy NASCAR people live. I, too, love North Carolina. The Ashville area is beautiful and probably more affordable. Eastern Tennessee is also very nice. I lived there for many years. From Knoxville to the east.

idea for you - sm

Why not call the local Chambers of Commerce and pose these questions to them? They love to help.

Can you visit beforehand? - Did this

Sorry, I have no info on Charlotte for you, just an idea. Before deciding on a place to relocate to, I vacationed in potential target sites of Minnesota, Washington State, and California, just driving around and taking in the sights. Granted, I was single, no children, and took an adult friend with me, so this may not be a feasible option for you. But what a great adventure it could be for your children. I was 8 when our family drove from San Francisco to Philadelphia, and my family still bring up points about that trip.

To Person Looking For Northern Relocation: I Have LotsSep 21, 2014
Didn't want my reply to get buried below.  I have a lifetime of experience with Alaska, western Canada (Alberta, BC), and the Pacific Northwest (WA, OR, ID) - and youth spent in the midwest (MO, KS). There's one thing you definitely need to consider right off the bat that has to do with climate indirectly, and it affects a lot of people very negatively - which is the more extreme differences in daylight hours between summer and winter as you move further north.  You don' ...
