Please help - mice
Posted: Aug 6, 2013
I live in a very old brick house, and over the years have occasionally had mice, but usually in the winter. I've learned to keep my food in either plastic containers or in the fridge. For the past two nights, my dogs have awakened me by barking and sniffing in various spots on my first floor, not just the kitchen, and yesterday I saw one running across my living room carpet. I'm not scared of mice, but now I'm starting to freak out.
I have traps set everywhere that my dogs can't get to, but the mice aren't even bothering to lick off the peanut butter anymore, or anything else I've offered them. Traps aren't working!
Can anybody help? I can't afford an exterminator.;
well you could get a cat... - or see message

there's a device Black & Decker makes, you plug it in and it emits a noise that humans can't hear, but mice can, and it keeps them awak.

I'd LOVE to get a cat, but my two little dogs hate cats, and they, and the cat, would be miserable.
I'll google electronic devices and see what I can find. I had something before that didn't work, but that was a couple years ago.
Thanks so much! Love ya!

look around your home for any spots where mice could be getting in and stuff them with steel wool. This will not help the ones in there already but will help keep future ones out. Make sure your traps are in working order and replace old ones that may have the smell of the dead mice in them. You could use Decon, but you will probably have an odor of the dead mice for awhile.

cotton balls soaked in mint oil repel mice. I have no idea if that is true, but it's fairly cheap and not as toxic as poison. Be sure to check with your vet whether mint oil is harmful to dogs, though, in case they get hold of it. I wouldn't think they would find mint attractive, but you never know with dogs. Good luck.
They have humane traps where you can - catch

the mice and release them to a field. From there, the hawks usually take care of the problem.

Okay, I've ordered an electronic repellant, some spray called "Critter Out" from Amazon that sounded good, have put peppermint essential oil-doused cotton ball all over the place, sprinkled cayenne pepper all over my garbage in the kitchen trash can and covered the trash can. plus the useless peanut butter traps. I don't live near any fields, so humane traps would be a pain.

I used the humane traps before (hate the thought of dealing with a dead mouse!) and released them into the woods across the street from my house. If you decide to try the humane traps, maybe you could check with the local pet store to see if they would take them, or could connect you with someone who might want them (someone with a pet snake for instance?). Good luck with your mouse problem!

you just plug it in an outlet and they emit a sound that keeps them away,
they are only like 10 or 12 bucks and they work!!

Maybe the mice are suspicious of the peanut butter, but you might try something else: Once I was told to put a little piece of string in a mousetrap, and sure enough it caught a mouse right away!

The best thing I have found so far is a mice poison called JUST ONE BITE. The active ingredient is bromadiolone. It comes in packets with pellets inside. I have found it at the local hardware store and online at such places as eBay (but overpriced there, IMHO). Sometimes, you can just place the packets and the mice will open them. For whatever reason, our mice are not able to open the packets, so I open the packet and place the pellets where other animals cannot get to them, but in places where I know the mice have been. I've put these behind our stove and along routes where we've found mouse droppings, such as the back of the kitchen countertop. The poison kills the mouse and dries it up without creating an odor. I've also seen this ingredient in a product called TomCAT, where a block of the poison is contained in a hotel-like thing, but the mice in our house did not touch it. However, they eat up the pellets in no time. Then, we find dead mice. Personally, that freaks me out and I have to have someone else pick them up, but that's another issue. Good luck to you.

We get them too. We live in the country and are surrounded by rice fields, soybean fields, etc. Anytime the farmers start cutting crops, planting crops, plowing, etc., the mice migrate our way. :)
We have dogs too, so we're careful about using any kind of poison. I do know that if the mice eat the dogfood, then the poison set out for the mice doesn't work. They become immune. It's some specific ingriedient in the dogfood that counteracts the poison. We use glue traps, but we also put a piece of something on it to attract the mice even though the traps have a peanut butter scent or something. I use pieces of tootsie rolls, which the mice seem to love. Weird, I know, but hey it works. :)
I also read that cottonballs soaked in peppermint extract keep the mice away. It's something about the peppermint that they find repulsive. I haven't tried this because one of our dogs is still a puppy and because she finds anything and everything wonderful to chew up.

MICE!Oct 28, 2015Hello. My husband has recently seen mice in our closet in the bathroom. My question is what is the best way to get rid of the mice, cat or poison? If we get a cat, will the cat need to hunt them down or will the mice leave when the cat takes residence? My thoughts are if we get poison, we will have to keep getting it because the mice will keep coming back. Thanks so much for any input. ...
Baby MiceJun 11, 2010I know he should have left well enough alone, but DH found a mommy and 5 baby mice in our shed. He brought their bedding and the mice into the house to show me. Mommy escaped and we can't find her. Does anyone know what I can do for those poor babies? After I put the dogs to bed at night, I leave out trails of cheese for Mommy, leading to the babies, hoping she'll come back. Sure, they're rodents, but I feel terrible. ...
