McDonald's going automated?

Posted: Oct 26, 2014

… So not sure whether this is just speculation or not. Would not surprise me though, it's all about the almighty dollar. Kind of sounds familiar too, huh?

Many of the people working at McDs seem to have a myriad of challenges. I usually don't go to those places because of the people they have working there. They have no manners or people skills and it makes you wonder about the quality of the food. Like everyone else in today's labor force, they put forth little effort because they are not getting $40K a year plus benefits for flipping burgers. Automation would be a big improvement IMHO.

AGREED! I would love to have more services automated - given the horrible attitude most workers have

Yet they want $15 an hour!! Please!!! Give me a computer screen any day!!

We can do better than that. Just stop eating - at Mickey-D. (sm)

Disgusting, fattening food. No wonder America is the land of super-sized people.

Sounds very familiar--sm - anon

I have had reasonably fair service at McDonald's on the rare occasion I go. I also know some teenagers who are having trouble finding part time work as it is. I would not welcome the automation. Unless I am in an extreme hurry, I also avoid the self checkout at the grocery store or Home Depot, I can wait just a few extra minutes to keep somebody else working to feed their family.

I'm the same way - wheres_my_job

I support HUMANS getting paid to do a job. My service at McDonald's (on the rare occasions I go there) is always fine.

I enjoy interacting with people. If people in those kinds of jobs got paid better, maybe they'd have a better attitude. Who knows what ridiculous schedule they are forced to work ("open availability" is inhumane, in my opinion), plus all the turnover in those kinds of jobs (due again to low pay), so those workers are often stretched thin.

Power to the people. People before machines. Is there such a thing as TOO MUCH automation? We shall find out in the coming decade. Perhaps all the problems we are having NOW on the planet are in part due to TOO MUCH AUTOMATION (translation: squeeze profit out of vulnerable people for the few), and not enough smart thinking about work, money, social mobility, urban/suburban sprawl etc.

"Just throw automation at it, that will solve the problem" - that seems to be the attitude. We'll see what the coming decades bring - I don't think it's gonna be good (global warming, yeah, go on, throw your freaking computers AT THAT, hunks of plastic and metal, yeah that'll solve it).

Honestly if they had a better attitude they wouldnt be forced to work - at McDonalds

Hmm, and yet it is not unheard of for them to make more than me at times--sm - anon

I am not all that convinced attitude is the problem. Sometimes you take whatever job is available. As I said before, most of the people I have encountered at McD's have seemed to be pretty hard working and doing their jobs well.
LOL - plenty of people at fast food places have good attitudes - wheres_my_job

So many things go into it besides one's "attitude." I know, it is comforting for some to believe it is all the individual's fault when they have a crappy low-paying job, rather than structural problems in the larger economy, problems inherent to free-market capitalism, etc.

Always easier to "blame the victim"

LOL cashiers and wait staff are always very nice to me, anywhere I go. Don't know why you get all the "bad attitude."
They're just trying to convince themselves that - the same fate will never happen to *Them*.

Being such extra-special, "irreplaceable" boons to the lofty field of medicine, and all.
They're cranky working there for the same reason - we get cranky working for an MTSO.

It doesn't matter whether you're a burger flipper or a finger-worn MT, crummy pay and lousy management are the same, identical curse.

I agree, too. And I hate those self-checkout - stands! Far slower in my experience!

I never get through those diabolical contraptions without being charged twice for at least one item, or having it start screaming at me, "YOU HAVE REMOVED AN ITEM FROM THE CHECKOUT STAND!" and refusing to go on until I put the bag back again. Often the bag is full and I want to put another one on there. But oh, no... it won't allow that. Or else it refuses my debit card. Or fails to give me change and a receipt if I pay cash. No matter what I do, I always have to stand there and wait for the attendant to come fix the problem. Meanwhile, everyone in the checkout line that I didn't want to wait in line behind, has long since left and gone to their cars.

The last time it screamed at me about putting my bag back on the counter, I simply slipped off my shoe and put that there, instead. That shut it up.
