I'm stuck

I'm a work at home subcontractor. No benefits obviously. Because of low pay, lack of work, etc, I've found myself in poverty. I now receive full medical and food stamps.
I would like to get a job OUTSIDE of my house, in the real world, with real pay and real benefits. The problem? NO CAR. Lost my car a few years ago due to nonpayment. I'm not on a bus line. I rely on family and friends (at their schedule) for groceries and what not.
Does anyone have any advice on this? I live in a rent-controlled apartment and dont really want to move.
I know I'm not the only one in this situation in this field. TX

[ In Reply To ..]Start looking at your neighbors for income opportunities. That way, you don't need a car til you can afford one. Options are babysitting (kids, pets, even plants when they're out of town), housecleaning, mowing yards (I didn't do that, but you might be able to). Do you know how to paint walls and ceiling very well? I did that for a few people and it pays pretty good. I also did pet sitting and housecleaning for immediate neighbors. Offer services anywhere you can walk to. You'd be surprised at how many will grab a chance to have somebody help out. Oh, this one you don't have to leave home to do... I do editing for other people (not medical) who have to write papers and not entirely sure of their written grammar, etc. They know what they want to say but need help putting it on paper. They send me their work in an email. I put it into a new document, edit, send back as an attachment. They send a check in the mail. Just think of anything you know how to do and offer it up. Sewing? Mending? Knitting? The possibilities are endless.

[ In Reply To ..]Our agency had a loan program for people to buy cars as we understood that people trying to find jobs need transportation. Check at the office where you get your food stamps if they know of anyone providing such programs in your area. They offered budget counseling and shorter term help with housing, etc.
I would check into this as soon as possible because I believe a lot of the federal funding to help people who are down on their luck is about to be pulled by the new administration. Good luck to you.

[ In Reply To ..]because I need a vehicle badly myself, living out of town about 10 miles or so and no bus line and a cab is extremely expensive.
They specialize in people with "financial issues" like me right now.
There is a local office near me, and my landlord gave me the guy's name and recommended him "son-in-law of a friend..." kind of thing.
Need base of $500 down payment or deposit, and they find financing for you.
My credit is in the hole at the moment, having left an abusive partner who was doiong his best to run me into the ground financially, and my truck got repossessed with only 3 months left on the lease. That doesnt do my credit score any good.

[ In Reply To ..]There are a few companies that hire customer service from home. I don't know of any (sorry) but I have heard that they do exist. Are you very organized? Can you help others do that? Do you sew? Bake? Cook? Here is something unique I just heard about: Taking other people's things that they want to sell and doing it for them on local FB groups and Craig's list. You give them 75% and you keep 25%. It would add up fast.

[ In Reply To ..]Hi, I am not sure if this would be of any help, but I have a friend who is unable to drive due to medical issues. However, she can still work. Out town has absolutely no bus service and taxis are too expensive. So, my friend pays for a friend to drive her around, kind of like an uber service. She gets her work schedule and plans her weekly transportation needs. Her current driver is a retired lady who gets extra money. It's about $20 weekly. It's not long distances; just 5 miles to and from work and home.
Do you craft? Facebook has become very popular with people who put their crafts up for sale. Back in the day, another friend of mine did well on ebay.
Also in our town, babysitting is a booming business. Daycare centers are about $600 per child! My sister offers before and after school care for two children. They are in 1st and 2nd grade. She makes $100 a week and does not have to drive anywhere. Gets them in the morning from mom, gives them breakfast, puts them on the bus, and gets them off the bus. Mom works 7a.m. To 7 p.m. with full time hours and a commute. She keeps them if they are sick or school is out (for extra pay). She likes it and they think of her as grandma.

[ In Reply To ..]If you decide to do this, just make sure your town does not require you to have a license, insurance, and be first aid and CPR certified. You'd also have to claim what you make by filing Schedule E as a self-employed person and pay quarterly taxes, unless your spouse can have extra taken out of their paycheck. Your expenses would be part of the square footage of your home where you do most of the daycare with that percentage as part of electric heat, homeowners insurance, mortgage interest, sewer tax, etc., food for breakfast, snacks, supper, activity supplies, and so forth and so on. I wouldn't run this type of operation under the table because you'd be in big trouble if one of the kids is hurt or injured. You could potentially be sued by a parent.
